Activity: Scenic Design / Costume Design Prerequisites: Students should be currently reading a play or should pick a play/scene/ character

to design for. Students should pick whether they are doing set design or costume design outside of class and should pick what scene or what character they want to design for.

Overview & Purpose

Information/Instructions
Step One: Have students write down in the center of a piece of Materials Needed paper what theyre designing for (a character of a Paper specific scene) and make a circle around it. For the Pencil next five minutes, have them make an idea web of all Colored Pencils the adjectives or things that their intended design Markers makes them think, feel, or should have as a part of it. Rulers After theyve finished their webs, have them use one Miscellaneous craft corner of the paper to test the colors they think theyd supplies like to use. These should be colors that are either specifically mentioned in the script or should contribute to what the feel of the set/costume is. Have the students then begin to fully flush out their Other Resources designs. Hand out blank body forms and blank stage Printouts of body forms plots for students to use as a basis for their designs. Printouts of set designs Have colored pencils/markers/rulers and anything else that they might use in a few containers at the front of the room. Let the students work on their designs for the rest of class. When they are finished, they should write out a concept for their design for homework.

The following class, have students present their Additional Notes designs to their classmates. They shouldnt read their design concept directly from their homework however, just a short description of why they did what they did.
