December 2013 Complimentary

Have you heard what

Haddad Subaru has done? see page 3
for the exciting story.

B
erkshire Humane Society (BHS)
joined the ASPCA (The Ameri-
can Society for the Prevention of Cru-
elty to Animals) and Subaru of
America for the annual year-end Sub-
aru Share the Love event and cele-
bration, which kickd off November 21,
2013 and runs through January 2, 2014.
As part of this national effort, BHS and
Haddad Subaru teamed up to create
100 Cats for Christmas, a low-cost
spaying and neutering event for 100
cats in Berkshire County on Wednes-
day, December 18.
BHS is also very pleased with the
communitys response to 100 Cats for
Christmas, which is offering spaying
or neutering of cats as well as a rabies
vaccination for only $25.00. Although
the registration deadline for the event
was Saturday, December 14, the 100
openings were filled long before that
day.
Our shelter is committed to control-
ling the overpopulation of cats in Berk-
shire County, says John Perreault,
Executive Director of BHS. With the
funds from the ASPCA and help from
our friends at Haddad Subaru in Pitts-
field, our goal is to spay/neuter 100 cats
before Christmas, he explains. This
event will help our neighbors who cant
afford spaying or neutering but who
want to be good, responsible cat own-
ers.
According to Perreault, BHS applied
for ASPCA funding to host 100 Cats
for Christmas because of the ongoing
need for low-cost spaying and neuter-
ing of cats in the community. Currently,
the shelter offers other programs for
this service, but the need constantly ex-
ceeds the number of openings. For ex-
ample, although the shelters Feline
Spay Neuter Program, or CatSNIP,
spayed and neutered about 200 cats this
year, the wait for future appointments
is over two months.
Perreault explains that Berkshire
county residents registered to partici-
pate in 100 Cats for Christmas will
drop off their cats at BHS between
7:00am and 8:00am on Wednesday, De-
cember 18. Sales staff from Haddad
Subaru will then drive the cats to their
appointments at local veterinarians,
who have reduced their fees for this
special event. BHS staff will return the
cats for pick-up at the shelter in the af-
ternoon.
To participate in the 100 Cats for
Christmas, residents of Berkshire
County needed to preregister by com-
ing to BHS, completing a registration
form, and paying a non-refundable $25
fee. Reservations were made on a first
come, first serve basis.
Located on East Street in Pittsfield,
Haddad Subaru has been a long-time
supporter of BHS. Most recently, it has
partnered with the shelter on several
satellite canine adoptions and the 2014
Subaru Outback Raffle, a major
fundraiser. The car dealership also
sponsors a "Dog of the Week," and, if
the sponsored dog is adopted that week,
Haddad Subaru donates $50 toward the
adoption fee.
"Subaru owners love pets like they
love their Subarus - nearly 7 out of 10
Subaru owners have a pet, and Subaru
customers are 1.3 times more likely to
own a pet than are the customers of our
competitors. Haddad Subaru is proud
to help Berkshire Humane Society's ef-
forts in any way we can, so we are ex-
tremely pleased to be a part of "100
Cats for Christmas" by transporting
cats in new Subarus, of course! to
participating Berkshire County vets for
spaying and neutering, says Chris
Kramek, Haddad Subaru Sales Manager.
Other options for low-cost spaying and
neutering for cats are still available to
families in need. One example is
BHSs CatSNIP. Pittsfield residents can
pick up an application for this program
at the shelter. The cost is $50 and in-
cludes a rabies vaccination. For more
information about CatSNIP or other
spaying and neutering programs, call
the feline staff at BHS at 413-447-
7878, ext.24, or visit BerkshireHu-
mane.org. To learn more about the

owners choice of participating charities, one of
which is ASPCA. A majority of the ASPCAs Share
the Love donation is targeted for distribution as

pleased to be a recipient of a $2,500 grant.

Going Home
Starting on Black Friday, the Sonsini Animal Shelter hosted an open house weekend with
reduced-fee adoption rates. The goal? To get as many animals into loving homes during the
holiday season as we could. We are happy to report that 20 felines and 3 dogs found their
homes over the weekend. Here are some of the animals who are so glad to have found their
place in the world.

e tend to take for granted that not
only do we know our own name
but that people who are already a part
of our life identify us by it. Newly
adopted cats, however, may need some
time and assistance to grasp even the
concept of having a name. This is par-
ticularly true of shelter cats. Although
shelters, such as Purradise, typically
give incoming animals a temporary
name, in the interest of a living beings
being called something less cold than a
number, a kitty there dubbed, say,
Licorice, may have lived on the street
without being called anything at all, ex-
cept perhaps Hey you. And what if
she had already been called Shadow
for years in a previous home? Imagine,
then, your new adoptees confusion
when you begin to her Inky. Little
wonder if she does not answer to it!
The good news is that as they embark
on a new life, most cats take readily to
being given a fresh nameone that will
remain for some time as signifying their
acceptance into that life.
Once you decide on a good name, ad-
dress your new cat by that name only
and as often as you can, greeting her in
fairly identical terms: when you get up
in the morning, come home, and notice
her here and there in your residence
(e.g., Hi, Inky!). Cats do understand
the notion of greeting; you may eventu-
ally hear a unique chirrup in response
to your hello. Using her name fre-
quently as she explores various areas of
your home helps reassure your new pet,
who may still be shell-shocked from
various relocations, that this new place
is now HER place.
As you interact additionally, begin to
add basic wordsconsistent terms,
pleaseagain paired with the new
name (e.g., Bedtime, Inky) as well as
simple gestures, such as patting the des-
tination point (e.g., your lap or a chair)
or beckoning or pointing (Come,
Inky, Down, Inky!). The gestures vi-
sually reinforce whatever your cat is
hearing, aiding the learning process.
Remember to keep using her name
whenever she comes or otherwise obeys
you (Good Inky), as well as when
you interact in positive contexts, such
as feeding time, shows of affection, or
grooming, all while using a pleasant
and encouraging tone of voice (Food,
Inky! Pretty Inky! Hug, Inky!).
This builds a foundation of good asso-
ciations with the new name, while in-
creasing her vocabulary by a few
simple terms that your cat will realize
refer to her best interests in some way.
That brings me to modeling. In a house-
hold with other pets and people, be sure
to use everyones name in everyday
conversation, so your cat can observe
how names are spoken and responded
to amid what may first seem to her a
baffling whirlpool of speech. Encour-
age others to call your cat by her new
name, to help her understand that it be-
longs to her
rather than
just being
some sound
that occa-
s i o n a l l y
emits from
your mouth.
It is helpful
to alter how
you say it,
too: whisper
it, singsong
or coo it,
and so on,
a l w a y s
when fo-
cused on your cat, to help her separate
the name itself from just a tone of voice.
My one caution is: hold off on adding
nicknames to the mix until you are sure
she already connects with her real
name. Inkadinkadoo is fine eventu-
ally, but not while she is still figuring
out that Inky means her!
Aside from the evidence of her re-
sponses to your greetings and com-
mands, youll be able to tell soon
enough that she has learned her name,
when she reacts to the sound of it,
whether in overheard conversation or
when addressed directly.
Watch her pleasure when she hears her
name spoken. Listen to her purr when
you call her by the one term that, amid
all other words she hears, indicates her
unique place in your life. Short of her
being able to call you by name, these
frissons of joy are her way of express-
ing how secure she feels, how thankful
she is for having her very own human-
language term for the mutually respon-
sive relationship that has developed
between her and her new family.
This series follows the special human-
feline bond at Purradise, the Berkshire
Humane Society Cat Adoption Center
at 301 Stockbridge Road, Great Bar-
rington, MA 01230 (413-717-4244).

hen Chantal Leven decided to
foster cats and kittens for the
Sonsini Animal Shelter, she knew it
had to work for everyone in the
household. her dogs, her cats and
her husband Dan. Since they had a
separate room to keep foster animals,
she knew her animal family would be
okay with the plan. Dan also agreed.
"As long as you promise not to adopt
them." Chantal agreed.
Over the last seven months, the Lev-
ens cared for over a dozen kittens and
cats, and true to her word, Chantal
willed herself not to fall in love. On
September 14, she was called by shel-
ter staff and asked to foster "Snow
Ball", a feline that was scheduled to
arrive on the 16th. "The person who
found her wandering around her yard
said she's a long-haired white kitten,"
the staff told Chantal. In reality, she
was a very small adult cat, skin and
bones and very grateful that people
were finally paying attention to her. In
Chantal's care, it didn't take long to
discover that she had a great deal of
trouble eating. That was because she
had severe dental issues. Dr. Umlauf,
from Lenox Cat Hospital, removed all
but her canine teeth, and later had to
perform surgery again because of an
infected saliva duct. During the
months that followed, the Levens fed
Snow Ball her favorite, high-quality
food to help her gain weight. Chantal
faithfully brought her to Petco adop-
tion events where she was not chosen
by adopters despite her winning per-
sonality. Meanwhile, she started to be-
come part of the family, and Dan
began to mention to Chantal that "she
really seems at home here don't you
think? I think she likes living here."
Chantal agreed but kept her resolve to
not adopt her foster charges.
On the day Snow Ball was scheduled
to come to the shelter, where she
would be more likely to meet an
adopter, Dan told Chantal that he
wanted to adopt her. I guess you could
say that the foster experience snow-
balled This kitty couldn't have found a
better family to be part of. Maybe she
knew all along she had found a home
and the Levens just took a little while
to catch up.

Geko & Izzy
Geko and Izzy are two little characters!
Although these two Chihuahuas came
to the shelter in September as house-
mates, Izzy sometimes finds Geko a lit-
tle overwhelming or maybe even
annoying, so they can be adopted into
different homes. Both Geko, a nine-
year-old male, and Izzy, a ten-year-old
female, enjoy looking for adventures on
their walks. And despite being seniors,
they still have a lot of spring to their
step! Somewhat shy at first, they need
a little time to become acquainted but
soon charm everyone with their big per-
sonalities. Geko and Izzy would do
best in a home with teens or adults.
Bella
Bella is a nine-year-old Boxer mix who
had her world turned upside down
when her long-time owners changed
their lifestyle and surrendered her in
August. She is so ready for her own
family who would cuddle with her on
cold winter nights. If you need an exer-
cise buddy, Bella is your girl! She
loves to go for walks to keep fit and
trim. Bella tends to bark at new people,
but once properly introduced, shell
quickly become their best buddies. She
considers herself a bit of a queen, so she
would prefer a home with no young
children or other pets.
Gypsy
Sadly, Gypsy came to BHS in August
when her owner had to move into a
nursing facility. Staff believes this gor-
geous grey and white, domestic long-
hair cat is about six years old. Gyspy
prides herself on being reserved, but
she does like to snuggle on her own
terms. An only cat for all of her life,
she respectfully requests No other
kitty friends for me! in her new home.
She would also need to be regularly
brushed to keep her long coat tangle
free and beautiful.
Angel & Tucker
This loving 5-year-old brother and sis-
ter have survived some tough times to-
gether. Before being surrendered in
August, their previous owner aban-
doned them, and they were forced to
live outside. Not surprisingly, Angel
and Tucker, who are both white, do-
mestic shorthair cats, are very bonded
and can often be found sleeping and
playing together. (They would need to
be adopted as a pair through our
Buddy Program.) A little shy, they
really are quite personable and affec-
tionate. Angel and Tucker have aller-
gies that are managed with a proper
diet, and they would like to live in a
quiet adult home.
Amaya & Abraham
Amaya and Abraham are another
bonded pair, who came to us in August
after their owner developed allergies to
them. Both are white and brown, do-
mestic shorthair cats. A little rolly
polly, theyre ready for some fun times
in their new home. (They would also
need to be adopted together through our
Buddy Program.) Staff describes 3-
year-old Amaya as a loving girl who is
always looking for a warm lap and 2-
year-old Abraham as an independent
but playful boy. Both are declawed and
would have to be indoor-only cats.
Amaya and Abraham have lived with a
dog and another cat, and they think a
family with children would be just fine.
Selina
Poor Selina! This adorable cat was
abandoned with three other cats, two of
whom were her kittens. Although the
others were quickly adopted, Selina,
who is orange and brown shorthair and
thought to be about 3 years old, has
been waiting for her new home since
June. While living at Purradise, she
loves to play and watch birds in the sun-
room. Despite her difficult past, Selina
is very trusting and affectionate. She
enjoys the company of other cats but
would fit best in a quiet home with
adults and teenagers. No dogs please!
Charlie & Sammy and
Rose & Daisy
Yes, we even have chinchillas! Silver
with black highlights, Charlie, Sammy,
Rose, and Daisy are four years old and
were relinquished when their owner
wanted to reduce the number of animals
she owned. Because theyve become
good buddies, our plan is to adopt the
two males, Charlie and Sammy, and the
two females, Rose and Daisy, as pairs.
Both Charlie and Sammy are quite
friendly, and we expect Rose and Daisy
to become equally social with a little
more attention. Nocturnal by nature,
these cute little guys and gals would
like to live with adults or older children.

Home For The Holidays?
F
rom little kittens and senior dogs to ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs,
hamsters, and all types of birds, Berkshire Humane Society
(BHS) had a near record number of surrenders in 2013. But were
proud that weve adopted so many of these animals into loving
homes throughout Berkshire County and the surrounding areas.
As the year draws to a close, though, some very special animals are
still waiting for their forever family. So we ask you this question -
Can you open your heart and bring one (or two) of them home for the
holidays? Please stop by BHS in Pittsfield or Purradise in Great
Barrington, meet them, and talk to our helpful staff. To encourage
their adoption, were still offering our Choose an Adoption Fee
program as well as the Senior for Senior program and the Buddy
Program. Before leaving the shelter for their new homes, all our
cats, dogs, and rabbits are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped,
vaccinated, wormed, and more.

JULIE IS ONE OF THOSE GIRLS WHO
LOVES ALL TOO MUCH ...
and gets jealous of other dogs stealing her
owner's affection. She would do best in an
adult caring experienced home with a
fenced backyard and no competion (dogs
or other pets) so she could give and get all
the affection and attention. Julie loves to
play with toys and people. She likes some
male dogs but is "too bossy"

PETEY is a beautiful 3-4 year old neutered male mix
of dalmatian and staffordshire terrier. He is the most
lovable affectionate boy to people and especially
children. The only thing he loves more than people is
his favorite toy . . . A red ball. Petey would do best as
the only dog in a loving home with a backyard and
some humans who like to throw that red ball.

I came to the shelter when my family had to make a move and I
couldn't go with them. I am a big adolescent dog with a big heart, but
plenty to learn. I can get a bit nervous when someone greets me and
I am working with the kind staff at the shelter to sit for greetings, walk
on a loose lead, and direct my jumping and chewing for pen time and
toys. I do not like kitty cats. I have not had experience with dogs. I
would love someone to continue my training, and guide me to be-
come an excellent adult dog. Where are the big dog lovers?

Meadow
Meadow is a beautiful blond, Tortoise Shell,
spayed female. Ostracized from her feral
family, Meadow was eventually rescued
when she was 6 months old. Extremely
malnourished and on the losing end of an
advanced URI, Meadow nearly died. She is
a lovely cat with a sweet and passionate na-
ture who prefers to live in a one cat home.
If you can allow her to be who she is and
warm up to you in her own time, and if you
throw a few tasty treats into the mix, rest as-
sured, in time, Meadow will become your
very best friend.
Beauty
Meet beautiful Beauty. She is a 2 year-
old shorthair female. Beauty has a
sweet, silly and fun personality and a
lovely slender body. Shes not fond of
most other cats, generally preferring
humans instead, however she would
rather not be around high spirited chil-
dren. She is spayed, has had all other
necessary vet care, is ready for adop-
tion and is looking forward to her new
loving home!
Come in to Animal D.R.E.A.M.S. and visit Meadow, Beauty and all of the other
wonderful cats waiting for their human families
