To set the scene...

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes
Marcel Proust

To get us started...
Turn to the person sitting next to you and form pairs Take a minute to share with your partner a sparkling moment you experienced recently When done, your partner will ask you: What has made this a sparkling moment for you? and... What else? When I ring the bell, switch roles

Take a minute and write down at least two strengths you think your partner has. Share your insights with your partner:
Based on what you told me, I think you have XYZ strength (or you are good at XYZ...)

Watch for your partners reaction.

Interview Guidelines
In Pairs. One person will be an interviewer and the other the interviewee Take each other through the interview for about 10 minutes and then switch roles Use the questionnaire as your guide and... feel free to expand and explore. Encourage your interviewee to share the full richness of their story . Listen... Dont jump in with your own story Try to get the juice of the story capture notes and memorable quotes.

A BIT ABOUT STRENGTH-BASED CHANGE...

Strength-based Change
Appreciative Inquiry (AI) Solution Focus Positive Deviance All underpinned by: Positive Psychology, Neuroscience, complexity Positive Organisational Scholarship (POS) and dialogue-based change

The basic ideas behind Strengthsbased change

By shifting or prioritising our focus on:
What is working well/has worked well What helps us/the situation be at its best (or simply not as bad...) What we already know What resources are available to move forward What vision do we want to move towards Where/when does a problem not occur (or occurs to a lesser degree) Where are the positive deviants What can we do right away to move forward

We release creativity, resourcefulness, confidence and a clearer way forward!

What is AI

Key Concepts of Appreciative Inquiry

What we ask determines what we find What we find determines how we talk How we talk determines how we see our future How we see our future determines what we achieve

2013-12-06

AI
Is a philosophy... Not just a tool or a process (although there are AI tools & processes)

It offers a different lens, not rose-tinted specs

It can underpin everything you already do and help you do it even better.

AI History
Started in the late 1980s as an experiment in the US
The Cleveland Clinic

Mid-Late 1990s first exposed to large corporations & organisations in the US

GTE (Verizon), McDonalds, NASA, BA (N.America)

Early 2000s first experiences outside US (Europe, Brazil, Australia, Asia, India)
BP, US AID, BBC, Avon Mexico

2013 Gathering momentum WW and in the UK- Large and small businesses, government departments, health sector, local government, Voluntary sector

The Power and Benefits of AI

Positive image positive action What we inquire about grows...
What we measure gets focus...

When people talk about what works, there is a much higher level of energy, innovation and motivation In every situation, however challenging, something works Build on that! AI is less about solving problems it is about dissolving them.

One AI Process The 5D Model

Define Deliver/Destiny
Build the desired future! What do we want to work on?

Discover
Whats good about it?

Design
How will we get there?

Dream
How good can it get?

The next step of Lean the future of Lean

Marriage made in heaven:

Technical and human side of change Analytical and intuitive thinking

Exceed problem solving in results (novel solutions, from good to great) AI supports a culture of continuous improvement which is essential to the success of LSS A bridge between two change paradigms Easier acceptance, wider engagement From experience it works!

Taking some baby steps

Next time you get to work on a business or process change, can you ask yourself and others:
When has this process/situation worked well? Can you tell me what was happening then? What has been the best outcome of this process/area? What made it possible? What do you like most about this process/your work? When have you been most proud about your work here? What is working/flowing well today? Where and when does this process deliver value to customers? What knowledge and resources are readily available in the area? If you had the ability to improve this process as you wish, what would you improve first? How would the process look then?
