Lauren Biller 10/24/13 Vertical Articulation Activity Subject Area & SOL 1st grade

1.2 The student will investigate and understand that moving objects exhibit different kinds of motion. Key concepts include a) objects may have straight, circular, and back-and-forth motions; b) objects may vibrate and produce sound; and c) pushes or pulls can change the movement of an object.

2nd Grade
2.2 The student will investigate and understand that natural and artificial magnets have certain characteristics and attract specific types of metals. Key concepts include a) magnetism, iron, magnetic/nonmagnetic, poles, attract/repel; and b) important applications of magnetism.

3rd Grade
3.2 The student will investigate and understand simple machines and their uses. Key concepts include a) purpose and function of simple machines; b) types of simple machines; c) compound machines; and d) examples of simple and compound found in the school, home, and work environments.

Science: Force, Motion, & Energy

Reflection: The concept that ties the Force, Motion, and Energy SOL across grades 1st through 3rd is the understanding of push and pull. In 1.2 c, students will learn how pushing an object or pulling an object can change its movement. The distance of the movement changes based on the amount of force applied to the object. In 2.2 a, students learn about magnetism and how magnets attract and repel other magnets. Using vocabulary from the SOL in first grade, like push and pull, along with the new vocabulary in second grade (attract and repel), will help students to connect the topics together. For example, when demonstrating how magnets work the teacher could explain that when magnets attract, force is used to pull the magnets together. Then when magnets repel, the force pushes the magnets apart. Students build upon the basic knowledge of what push and pull means in second grade.

In 3.2 a & b, students learn how simple machines make work easier and what simple machines use pushing and pulling. An inclined plane allows people to push objects up or down a ramp and a wedge is used to push objects apart. A lever is used to life objects up by pushing down on one end. A pulley allows a person to move things up or down by pulling on the rope that runs through the wheel of the pulley. In each grade level the students build on their knowledge of push and pull. In first grade they learn how push and pull can move objects, in second grade they learn how push and pull applies to magnetism, and in third grade they learn how push and pull applies to simple machines that help to make work easier. It is important to understand and be aware of the content taught in previous grades because as a teacher you want students to be pushed to their full potential. You should know what students have already learned so that as a teacher you can use that information for review and not as the main content you are teaching. You also want the activities to be a little harder each year so that students are not doing the same activities in second grade that they have already done in first grade. I also think that you should look at the vocabulary words that are used and try to incorporate them into the next grade level. This will help students understand how some topics in science are related. I talked about an example of this above when using the words push and pull from first grade for describing the words attract and repel in magnetism. In general, it is a good idea to be familiar with what students are expected to learn in connecting SOLs so that you can help them put all of the information together and connect similar topics.
