Seneca council wraps up annual toy drive
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Santa Claus has some help this
holiday season, courtesy of the
Seneca High School student coun-
cil.
The schools annual toy drive
concluded last week with hun-
dreds of toys being loaded onto
trucks that will be distributed to
children in need.
Erica Maira, who works in the
guidance office, has been the advi-
sor for student council the last
three years. This years drive was
the biggest shes seen.
Last year was down a little bit.
It varies year to year with families
moving into the area or moving
away. The amount that was col-
lected this year was phenomenal.
Weve never filled two sides of the
cafeteria before, Maira said. It
really was a banner year.
Students from the surrounding
schools in the district collect toys
and bring them into donate. Indi-
an Mills Memorial School in Sha-
mong, Cranberry Pines in Med-
ford and Olson Middle School all
participated in this years drive.
The credit belongs to those stu-
dents as well, Maira said.
The students at those schools
really do a great job of collecting
the toys, Maira said. We share
the letters the kids who receive
the donations send us, and it real-
ly gets the other students excited

Stephanie Flemming of Seneca High School packs up toys as a part of Seneca High Schools annual toy drive on Dec. 3. Toys filled tables
throughout the Seneca cafeteria on Dec. 5 as organizations from across Burlington and Camden counties came to pick up toys that will go to
kids in need.

Seneca student council
cleaned, organized toys
to help out.
Senecas student council
cleaned and organized the toys
and displayed them in the cafete-
ria on Dec. 5. Representatives
from The Arc of Burlington Coun-
ty, Christian Caring Center and
the Dudley School were just some
of the organizations that came to
shop at Seneca. The toys are
then distributed by these organi-
zations across South Jersey. The
toy drive services more than 800
children.
Chris Callahan, George
Tutwiler, Portia Spearman, Maria
Malave and Jane Wenstrom of the
Octavius V. Catto Community
School in Camden all were a part
of this years collection. This is
Wenstroms 16th year partnering
with the districts toy drive.
The drive started at Shawnee
High School when my children
were students there. Since then,
its moved to Seneca and theyve
done a great job with it, Wen-
strom said. We distribute these
toys to 500 kids through our
school alone.
For Maira and the rest of the
student council, reading the let-
ters from those receiving the toys
makes all the hard work worth it.
Reading the letters and hear-
ing how happy the kids are, how
excited they are just warms your
heart so much, Maira said. To
know we have a hand in that is a
great feeling for all of us.

The shared services agreement among
Tabernacle, Shamong and Southampton
for tax assessor services has been a good
one for all three townships, officials said.
With the agreement set to expire at the
end of this year, Tabernacle is expected to
approve a three-year continuation at the
committees December meeting.
Its been a good partnership for the
township, and I would expect that it will
continue, township administrator Doug
Cramer said. Administratively, it has been
approved but it will not be officially ap-
proved until the committee has a chance to
review and discuss it.
Neighboring Shamongs township ad-
ministrator echoed Cramers sentiment.
Its been a good relationship for the
township, Sue Onorato said. Definitely
one that has saved us money as well.
Jay Renwick has served as Shamongs
tax assessor since 1998. Shamong first
came to an agreement with Southampton
in 2010 to allow his services to be used be-
tween the towns. The partnership with
Tabernacle followed in 2011. Renwick is in
the midst of completing a township-wide
reassessment for Tabernacle. The process
began in May and is nearing a conclusion,
as the deadline for appeals is Jan. 10.
The need for reassessment is due to in-
equities from property tax appeals. Taber-
nacle was forced to pay more than $80,000
back last year from appeals won by resi-
dents. The considerable change in the real
estate market from when the last reassess-
ment was done in 2006 is the driving force
behind why the process needed to be done.
The goal of a reassessment is to get the
data correct, Renwick said. Right now
its all over the place. We have properties
assessed way under or way over what their
actual value is. The only thing that is con-
sidered in a reassessment is market value.
After this process, the property tax appeals
will stop.
Cramer said he did not have the data on
how much the agreement has saved Taber-
nacle since 2011 readily available but
would be reviewing that information with
the township committee in the coming
weeks before ultimately voting on the reso-
lution at the Dec. 30 meeting.
In other news:
Applications are invited from residents
who wish to be considered for appointment
to the land development board, recreation
committee, Tabernacle Athletic Associa-
tion, historical society and municipal al-
liance committee. All township residents
interested in appointment should complete
a Citizen Leadership Form Application in-
dicating their interest.
The applications are available through
the township clerk's office:
Lastwpclerk@townshipoftabernacle-
nj.gov. Please submit your application to
La Shawn R. Barber, Township Clerk, 163
Carranza Road.
Tabernacle expected to approve shared services
Y
ouve heard it time and again
lately, but its worth repeating:
Shop local this holiday season!
Were already two weeks into this
shortened holiday shopping season
since Thanksgiving was so late this
year but if you havent already fin-
ished your shopping, you should
strongly consider buying as local as
you possibly can.
Keeping your spending dollars in
your hometown, or at least in the re-
gion, has immense benefits on the
local economy.
Even companies as large as Ameri-
can Express are touting the impor-
tance of shopping local. The company
started the now well-known Small
Business Saturday the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, the day after
Black Friday in 2010 to promote
small businesses. Just last year, a
study reported an estimated $5.5 bil-
lion was spent at small businesses on
that day in 2012!
A vibrant and successful local busi-
ness community has a trickle-down ef-
fect on our own pockets. Just think:
Successful local businesses make
other businesses want to locate in our
town.
More businesses equals more rata-
bles, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.
The more ratables we have, and the
lower our taxes are, the more attrac-
tive our community becomes to future
residents.
It all starts with you. If you have a
choice between buying a gift at a big
box store or a local mom-and-pop, sup-
port your neighbors by making that
purchase locally.
Our small businesses are already
struggling with a still-rebounding
economy and a holiday shopping sea-
son that is six days shorter than nor-
mal. Lets all help them out by opening
their doors and opening our wallets to
them. We can make it a truly happy
holiday season.
in our opinion

Sheriffs department
toy drive is underway
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield announced that
her departments annual Toy
Drive is officially underway, and
that residents and businesses can
donate toys for children of fami-
lies in need numerous drop-offs
located throughout the County.
Stanfield said that the collec-
tion would continue until Dec. 20,
when sheriff s officers will gather
up the bins, and return them to
the county complex. Toys will
then be safety checked by the
Burlington County Department
of Consumer Affairs. Human
service agencies will work
with the sheriff to distribute the
toys.
Every year, our residents pro-
vide a wonderful response to the
toy drive, Stanfield said. The
holiday season brings out the best
in people of our county, and it en-
ables us all to put a smile on the
face of a child who might other-
wise go without.
Last year, the department col-
lected approximately 1,100 toys;
the sheriff said she is optimistic
that the drive will exceed that
number this holiday season.
Drop-off locations include mu-
nicipal buildings and police de-
partments, county government
buildings, and private businesses.

Burlington Countys commit-
ment to cost-saving renewable en-
ergy moved another step forward,
with freeholder director Joe Don-
nelly reporting that Burlington
County College, using state grant
dollars, has trained 183 individu-
als, consisting of both unem-
ployed job seekers and those
presently employed, in green en-
ergy technology.
Our workforce development
efforts are geared toward prepar-
ing our residents for new job op-
portunities in the ever-evolving
workplace, Donnelly said. The
college is to be commended for
recognizing that sustainable ener-
gy is a rapidly developing, high-
demand field, and for providing
the resources to train many indi-
viduals. I applaud the college for
securing the $385,000 in grant
funds from the State Energy Sec-
tor Partnership Council that
made this program a success.
Sixty-four people who partici-
pated in the training program
were already employed by
Hutchinson Mechanical Services,
a company that specializes in
HVAC installation and repair in
South Jersey. This training, Don-
nelly said, will enable them to se-
cure and advance their careers.
He said that 119 of the students
were unemployed, and of the 64
who responded to follow-up sur-
veys, 19 report they are now em-
ployed. Donnelly said the county
and the college will continue to
work with the others to secure
employment, and noted that the
grant dollars are also providing
for job placement assistance.
Burlington County College is
proud to partner with the county
and its agencies in training work-
ers for jobs that will be a vital part
of our economic future, said
Burlington County College presi-
dent David Hespe. Theres no
question that the demand for sus-
tainable energy will continue to
grow, and we must take advantage
of this important trend.
Among the students who re-
sponded to the colleges survey
was Jim Keck of Hainesport. He
was unemployed for nearly two
years after a 28-year career in con-
struction. He stated the training
provided up-to-date information
about energy efficiency building,
and gave him the confidence he
needed to regain employment as a
construction supervisor this sum-
mer.
It was one of the best things
that could have happened to me,
Keck said. Just taking that
course and realizing everything
upstairs was still strong and my
mind was still working. It just got
me going again.
Beyond the hands-on training
and instructional materials, par-
ticipants also had the opportunity
to earn the industry-recognized
Building Performance Institutes
Residential Certification. BPI-cer-
tified professionals are more in
demand, because many state-run
efficiency and weatherization pro-
grams require BPI credentials.

County YMCA hosting
Project Giving Tree
Make the holiday brighter for
local children by participating in
Project Giving Tree at the YMCA
of Burlington and Camden Coun-
ties, a cause-driven nonprofit
charitable organization.
Through Project Giving Tree,
the Y strives to build hope and
wonder for children by providing
gifts to deserving children whose
families face financial hardship.
The Giving Trees are decorated
with tags identifying a child's
name, age, clothing size and other
items they would like from Santa.
The community is encouraged to
stop by the Y and select one or
more tags from the Tree now
through Thursday, Dec. 12 and
help make a child feel like a star
this holiday season.
Individuals and organizations
are asked to return the star(s)
with the wrapped gifts to the Y by
Friday, Dec. 13. Giving Trees are
displayed at the Mt. Laurel
YMCA located at 59 Centerton
Road in Mt. Laurel and the
Burlington-Riverfront YMCA at
302 Commerce Square Blvd. in
Burlington.
For more information on how
to participate in Project Giving
Tree, contact Pam Hall at the Mt.
Laurel YMCA at (856) 234-6200 ext.
232 or pamh@ymca-bc.org, or
contact Monica Pisano at the
Burlington-Riverfront YMCA at
(609) 543-6200 ext. 315 or moni-
cam@ymca-bc.org.
