Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. An unknown weight falls 4 cm on to a collar rigidly attached to the lower end of a

vertical bar 4m long and 8 cm2 in section. If the maximum instantaneous extension
is found to be 0.42 cm, find the corresponding stress and the value of the unknown
weight. E = 200 kN/mm2 . [16]

2. Prove that Poisson’s ratio for the material of a body is 0.5, if its volume does not
change when stressed. Prove also that Poisson’s ratio is zero when there is no
lateral deformation when a member is axially stressed. [16]

3. A simply supported beam of length 8m rests on supports 5m apart, the right hand
end is overhanging by 2m and the left hand end is overhanging by 1m. The beam
carries a uniformly distributed load of 5 kN/m over the entire length. It also carries
two point loads of 4 kN and 6 kN at each end of the beam. The load of 4 kN is
at the extreme left of the beam, whereas the load of 6 kN is at the extreme right
of the beam. Draw the SF and BM diagrams for the beam and find the points of
contra flexure. [16]

4. (a) From first principles show that the shear stress is not maximum at the neutral
axis in case of an isosceles triangular section. [8]
(b) A beam of T - section is having flange 120mm × 15mm and web 100mm ×
15mm. It is subjected to a shear force of 24kN. Draw shear stress distribution
across the depth marking values at salient points. [8]

5. (a) What is moment area method? Explain the two Mohr’s theorems, as applica-
ble to the slope and deflection of a beam. [6]
(b) A cantilever of uniform cross-section of length l carries two point loads, W at
the free end and 2W at a distance a from the free end. Find the maximum
deflection due to this loading. [10]

6. (a) Explain horizontal and hoop stresses as applied to thin cylinders. [8]
(b) What thickness of metal would be required for cast-iron water pipe 90 cm in
diameter under a head of 100m? Assume the permissible tensile stress for cast
iron as 20 MN/ m2 . [8]

7. (a) Define slenderness ratio. State the limitations of Euler’s formula. [4]
(b) Derive an expression for the Rankine’s crippling load for a column. [8]

(c) How will you justify the Rankine’s formula is applicable for all lengths of
columns, ranging from short to long columns. [4]

8. An open coiled helical spring is made out of 10 mm diameter steel rod, the coils
having 10 complete turns, and a mean diameter 80 mm, the angle of helix 150 .
Calculate the deflection under an axial load of 250 N and the maximum intensities
of direct and shear stresses induced in the section of the wire. If the axial load of
250 N is replaced by an axial torque of 6 N.m, calculate the angle of rotation about
axis of the coil and actual deflection. N=0.85×105 N/mm2 and E=2.5×105 N/mm2 .
