(Maia Free From You) AY13/14

Muhammad Danial Hisyam Bin Malik 1141843 DMAT/FT/3B/01

Song Choice I chose Maias Free From You as I felt that it gives a simpler yet fuller sound and flow than the other track choice. It also fits with an idea of my artistic direction I would like to go with this remix. Artistic Direction I decided to go for a more chill and warm song concept, thus deciding on an acoustic full band set type of genre. The remix idea does not incorporate a lot of audio sampling, but more of a cover-like idea. I kept the original lead and backing vocal tracks, with some vocal audio cuts to fit in as additional backing vocals. I chose this acoustic full band set as I feel that the original vocals sound very warm and gives off a very relaxing feel. Which is why I did not choose to go for a dance or rock-ish kind of genre. With the acoustic full band idea, the instruments that were used in the remix are acoustic drums (layered with electronic drums), string ensemble, synth strings, acoustic guitar, bass (several layers), acoustic piano (layered with electric piano). Additional Notes For the Radio Edit Mix version of the remix, I had to cut out the Intro and shorten the 2 Outro Choruses to just 1.

Mastering Procedures/ Equipment/ Techniques I made sure that the pre-mastered mix Digital Audio Level did not exceed 0.0dB FS, before I started any mastering. Remix was mastered with the following plug-ins: - C1 Comp (s) Mix Compressor - S1 Shuffler (s) Mix Stereo Spread - LinEQ Broadband (s) Mix Linear Equalizer - L3-LL Ultra (s) Mix Limiter I used the C1 Comp to compress just enough to give a smooth flow around the whole mix, similar to how commercially released songs are. I tried to give as smooth a flow as possible. The S1 Shuffler was used to spread out the mix thus giving a little bit more space for the lead vocals. I spread out just very little to prevent the mix from sounding to weird. LinEQ Broadband was used to provide more vocal clarity in the mix, as well as provide more body to the mix. Just slight tweaks, of no more than 3.0dB. I set the L3-LL Ultra plug-in settings so as the mix does not sound extremely squashed or muddy. Personal Opinion I would say my mastering is still some steps back from the level of typical commercially released ones. For instance, I need more practice on the Compressor and Linear EQ on the Master track. Compressor especially as I still am not to sure on the proper settings or choice of compressor types. For the Linear EQ, I need to learn more on smoothening the mix much more properly, removing

less important frequencies without affecting the whole mix too much. Personal Reasoning I would say that my master is not very clear as commercial ones. I am sure that it could be much clearer. Also for the loudness part, I feel that it could be slightly louder (similar to commercial ones), but I was afraid it would mud up the mix. Other Generally I would say that I am satisfied with my remix - more towards the mastering side. The master sounds clear enough, clearer than any of my other mixes and masters. Arranging wise, I would say that there could be so much more going on.
