Types of Mining:
SURFACE MINING
Surface mining is a method of mining that is used to extract minerals and metals that are found near the surface of the earth. There are three basic types of surface mining: Open Pit mining involves excavation that results in a terrace-like look to the area that is being mined. Cuts are made in the ground and are worked around the circumference of the mine. In Strip Mining the rock and dirt covering the ore is removed one strip at a time. Once the ore has been removed from the rst strip, a second strip is cut next to it, and the waste from the second strip is used to back ll the rst, and so on. Quarrying begins by blasting into rock in a manner that creates the greatest fracturing. Quarrying ornamental stone employs a method called broaching, which uses wedges placed into holes that are hammered until the stone breaks o.
