Jessa Maureen M. Carolino 2012-59026 Reaction Paper on Sister Stella L.

Movie The movie, at first, was not much of a delight for me to watch considering it was a movie from the 1980s, and because Im a fan of modern, science-fiction, chick-flick, and romantic comedy movies, it took some effort to pay attention to the movie. But after I realized that Vilma Santos was included in it and was playing the lead role, I decided to watch and focus on the movie. The award-winning film tells the story of a nun who was accidentally thrown in a strike of furious workers against a local oil company. Finding herself more involved in the activity, she decided to leave her work in the convent to help the workers fight against the unfair and unjust company. Applying what she had learned in the convent and in Christs words, she continued to rebel against the company with the help of his ex-boyfriend and journalist, Nick Fajardo, mostly after the abduction and death of Ka Dencio. The film was exceptional and interesting. It has awoken me to possibilities that even the most devoted and religious people would rebel and fight against men who are unjust and unfair. I always thought that priests and nuns would prefer to stay in the convents and just pray for the problems of the nation or of their towns. But the movie presented a whole new era for them; an era when they are vocal of their demands and rights; an era when they arent afraid to fight back; and an era when they wont just hide in their convents and pray, but also to support their people and their Church. The film resembles much of the issues that the country is facing today. The one billion pork barrel scam was a terrifying and horrific issue towards the Church since priests have to go through hard work and labor just so they could give and help unfortunate people and families. Representing the Church is Sister Stella Legaspi and the workers against the corrupt and unjust senators and officials involved, and Janet Lim-Napoles who are represented by the local oil company. An interview with Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle showed how devastated he was when he knew about the scam, and even shed tears about the issue. Ever since, Archbishop Tagle has became vocal about it and has joined protests against the Pork Barrel and trashing the PDAF law. The film demonstrates a very important principle in our life, which is fighting for justice and for what is morally good. Every single one of us has the right to fight against abusive people, because if we just sit and let them control our lives, the abuse will not stop but will continue to be manifested in ways we wouldnt imagine possible.
