I know that intention combined with the power o
prayer can work miracles. It is my intention with this
system o leal your Back Now` to help and guide you
to radiant well being. 1his book is designed to gie you
an oeriew o the system and to gie you a speciFc
plan o action to ollow on your path o wellness. 1he
ideo is designed to help you with recoery and the
maintenance o a healthy back.
A healthy back has always been in the oreront o my
consciousness. 1he reason being is that my Dad had
a bad` back. I remember ery clearly as a child that
he sometimes had to crawl up our stairs at home to
go to bed. 1he doctors he saw Fnally gae him what
amounted to a ull trunk cast. It was a hot and bulky
contraption that laced shut. It looked like a cross
between a turtle`s shell and an old ashioned lady`s
corset. I would help him occasionally by pulling on
the laces that closed the cast and enabled him to stand
upright and reliee the pain.
lis back became bad` in the 50`s. I eer there was a
misnomer or a physical condition it is the phrase bad
back.` I do acknowledge that although no condition
can be essentially good or bad, it certainly elt bad
to my ather. lis injury was the result o an abuse
through oer use. Most nagging back problems, on a
purely physical leel, that are not congenital or caused
by traumatic accidents, are rom abuse rom oeruse
or underuse.

My cousin, who was in the Nay at the time, isited my
parents in Chicago. \hile he was isiting he was stricken
with Polio and his short isit turned into a year long stay.
As my parents lied in a third noor apartment with no
eleator, my ather would carry my adult cousin up and
down the three nights o stairs regularly. It compressed
and initiated the destruction o seeral o his lumbar
ertebral discs. Lentually he had a spinal usion
operation that helped him enormously. It was new
procedure in 1959 and they told him that they really did
not know i he would eer walk again. 1he operation
was a success and he resumed an actie liestyle. I always
accepted these stories on ace alue as the acts behind
my dad`s back problem. It wasn`t until I began to study
yoga and meditation that I realized that there was likely
something more going on. 1he real question, I realized,
was not how` it happened but why` it happened.
1en years later ater my dad`s operation I started to
practice yoga and meditation. I met my teacher, \ogi
Bhajan, who is the Master o Kundalini \oga. My
immersion in the study o the subtleties o the body,
mind, and emotions has led me to some wonderul
conclusions about the back and health and well being
in general. 1eaching Kundalini \oga to thousands
o students since 195 at the Uniersity o Alaska
Anchorage, has conFrmed what I know. Kundalini
\oga is an incredible tool or maintaining back health.
My prayer is that the inormation and exercises in this
book and on the DVD,ideo leal \our Back Now!,`
and the mantra, music on the CD will sere you and
your back well.

1his is the real question and it deals with you on all
leels o existence and consciousness. It inoles not
just the physical spine and its surrounding muscles and
ligaments but your mental, emotional, and spiritual
sel as well. 1here is nothing more debilitating and
rustrating than back discomort. It is a mixed bag o
physical inFrmity, pain management, and emotional
discomort.
Nothing that I know o gets your attention more
and as quickly as haing a problem with your back.
By a problem` with your back I mean some kind o
muscular discomort or soreness usually accompanied
by the mis-alignment o one o the spinal ertebrae,
discs, or an injured ligament. It can be a minor
condition, a congenital condition, or a reoccurring and
chronic condition.
Most non-trauma induced back conditions are not
caused by a single action. People naturally think that
when they reached or that cup or put on their sock
or lited that small object in an awkward manner that
this was the cause o the condition. It almost seems
like a betrayal. Ater all, I hae put my socks on or
years with no pain! 1he mental and emotional element
suraces at this juncture. \hy me and why now`
Any time the back has pain it seems inconenient and
somehow unair.

More accurately, the oending motion was the catalyst
or the condition rather than the cause. 1he condition
is usually a culmination o a ariety o actors. 1hese
actors include habitual posture and body alignment,
psychological proFle, leel o stress, kind o clothing
they are wearing, and the kinds o exercise they are
doing or not doing. 1he exception to this can occur
during extreme physical actiities such as heay liting
or contact sports. Any sharp and sudden pains or
pain that happens in the immediate days ater extreme
actiities needs the immediate attention o a qualiFed
health proessional.
I am an enthusiastic proponent o correct liting and
correct body alignment when doing physical tasks. It
all boils down to physical habits. lirst o all, you create
the habit and then the habit creates you! \hen students
tell me they hae been haing back pain I usually start
with these questions: \here is the pain \hen did it
start low long hae you had it Pain sometimes can
be reerred,` so ater the three basic questions I ask
something about their liestyle and habits. Usually I am
able to determine a physical habit pattern that they are
unaware that they are doing.
In my many years o teaching I hae run into some
reoccurring questions and physical patterns. lere
are some o the common comments I get during a
semester at the Uniersity O Alaska Anchorage.
My shoulder ,let or right, hurts a lot`

I usually ask at this point i the pain started beore or
ater school started. It is usually ater school started
and has to do with how they carry their book bags
or purses. It is ashionable to carry the books on one
shoulder which causes the imbalance o the muscles
and pain. It is always best to carry loads eenly on the
back in a backpack. Make your purse lighter or smaller
as well and alternate which shoulder you carry it on.
My hip and lower back hurt`
I it is a man I will ask him how he carries his wallet.
Otentimes, men will carry their wallets in their hip
pockets. 1his causes the hips to be out o alignment
eery time they sit in a chair or drie their cars. Carrying
the wallet in the ront pant`s pocket or shirt pocket can
eliminate the irritation.
I will ask both men and women i they are the primary
care gier or a small child in their
house. Mothers and athers and grandmothers and
grandathers loe to carry a small child on their
ohand hip so they can tend the child and work at
the same time. 1oddlers especially loe to get picked
up and carried so they can participate in what eer the
mom or dad are doing. 1his unbalanced load can cause
a problem in the lower back. I they cannot stop this
habit, I will suggest that they systematically switch hips.

Clothing can be a actor as well. ligh heels go in and
out o ashion. \hen heels are in ashion, there are
always more complaints about lower back pain and
reerred neck pain. Very low or nat heels are much
better or keeping the back in alignment.
1he real solution to the physical part o this problem
lies in working with three speciFc areas o the body.
1o maintain a healthy lower back you must stretch the
lie nere ,hamstrings,, build the strength o the third
Chakra, which is an energy center, through abdominal
strengthening, and moe the back in a ariety o ways.

areas o the body.
Both my shoulders and my neck hurts`
1he Frst thing I will ask is i they work on a computer
regularly. Recently a whole rat o new chronic
injuries hae happened because people spend so much
time working and playing on the computer. 1he
biomechanics o working in ront o a CR1 are ery
important. A good chair, a mouse pad, and keyboard
with wrist support are critical. 1aking care o yoursel
during the time you work is equally critical.
1he nature o computing is ascinating. In eect, as
you stare into that screen, your mind gets pulled into
a state o seemingly inFnite inormation. People
that sur the net sometimes get so inoled that time
disappears! 1he body is orgotten and sometimes

rozen` in place. \ou orget to moe your body and a
lot o shoulder and neck tension can result. It is good
to take regular breaks rom computing. Lery Fteen
or twenty minutes get up and moe around, stretch,
drink water, and roll the shoulders and neck.
1he next question I ask usually has to do with caeine
intake. \hen students are under the stress o deadlines,
usually caeine intake goes way up. More stimulation
o the nerous system oten has the opposite eect o
what is desired. Central to the practice o Kundalini
\oga is the idea that in order to hae a lot o energy you
hae to allow the body to be in a relaxed state so that
the now o energy does not get stuck or blocked. More
caeine usually leads to more stress and uncomortable
necks and shoulders.
1he real key to unlocking the shoulders and neck and
haing them in a state o constant physical relaxation
lies in working arious muscle groups in the lower back
, this can be the root cause o the problem,, upper
back, chest, shoulders and neck in a tension and then
release` method. In the ideo in this system, leal

these parts o the body.
1hese common problems are a small representation
o what causes non-traumatic back problems. On
a purely physical leel, back problems are caused by
abuse through underuse or oeruse. Certainly you can
oeruse your back like my dad or like a steel worker
carrying heay loads day in and day out. loweer,
most o us do not use our backs enough.

Lspecially as we get older, our range o actiities
becomes quite narrow. \e get up, sit in a chair and hae
breakast, sit in a chair in our cars or on the bus going
to work, and then sit in a chair at work all day! Ater
work is done we get back in the car chair, go home and
then sit in our aorite chair reading or watching 1V. I
we are not sedentary, we may hae a aorite orm o
exercise. It may be playing a sport, walking, running,
or aerobics but usually we only hae time or one kind
o actiity.
1he body was designed or a ariety o actiities.
Children will rarely complain about non- traumatic
back pain because they are moing all the time. 1ell
a child to sit in a chair. In thirty seconds you will also
hae to tell them to quit wiggling! \alking is one o
the best actiities or the whole body but you also need
to dance, you need to stretch and you need to do new
and un physical actiities all the time.
Kundalini \oga is great or the back. My experience has
shown me that it is particularly eectie or congenital
curatures o the spine. In Kundalini \oga we spend a
lot o time working with the nexibility o the spine. \e
moe the whole back in many dierent ways that you
don`t normally do in adult lie. \e use static stretching,
range o motion moements, and also moe energy
through the spine. In addition, we work on the energy
Felds and learn and practice meditation techniques that
clear and clariy the mind and emotions. 1he net result
is a healthy and pain ree back as well as the means to
keep it that way!

I get eed-back rom students at the end o the semester
ia a written renection o their experiences doing yoga.
1he three comments that I most commonly get are:
1, I hae relaxed in class, 2, I eel healthier and less
stressed outside o class, and 3, my back eels better. I
always say that or these three reasons alone, it is worth
practicing yoga. Kundalini \oga is also an eectie
way o breaking cycles o chronic pain.

\e know that the mind and the body are connected.
\hen this really is apparent is when you hae pain.
Pain is the single most rustrating condition that
patients and doctors hae to deal with. It is physical
and nonphysical, it is real and imagined, it is aected by
moods and emotional states, and it does not respond
reliably to any kind o treatment or medicine. Chronic
pain, in particular, is diFcult to handle in that it is a
sel -perpetuating mechanism in the nerous system.
1here hae been recent studies that indicate that
bed rest and pain killers do not shorten the amount
o recoery time ater a back problem. loweer,
chiropractic adjustment can shorten recoery time.
Acupuncture, massage, and hot and cold therapy
hae also been shown to be eectie. Sometimes
normal physical actiity with treatment is best. I this
is ollowed by an exercise routine to strengthen and
stretch the back, reoccurring back problems are less
likely to happen.
I am always in aor o Frst pursuing the modality that
has the least side eects. I suggest you work with a
healer beore you pursue any kind o drug therapy or
consider surgery. Many medical doctors will work in
concert with holistic healing modalities. Practicing the
anti-anxiety meditation in this book can take a lot o
the stress and ear out o pain management.

In any eent, pain is not to be ignored. It is your
body giing you a message so that you will take care
o an injury and, more importantly that you maintain
a high leel o sensitiity. \hen you make it a habit
to ignore pain on a physical or emotional leel, you
are desensitizing yoursel to part o you that is ery
important on a spiritual leel. 1his quality o sensitiity
is ery eident in the lies o children.
Children will let you, and the whole world, know when
they are uncomortable. \hat is known is that the
pain,aersion cycle is a ery important part o their
learning process. lot stoes and small hands rarely
make contact more than once. \hat is not commonly
known is that the quality o a strong reaction to
discomort is a healthy renection o their innocence
and ulnerability.
\e know that children are ulnerable and need
protection. A child will use this quality and create a
Feld o energy based on trust and abundance. It is their
operating system in the world. 1hey will get their needs
ulFlled by this Feld o energy and the projection that
they cannot do eerything or themseles. It is always
unortunate when a child has to ulFll her own needs
too early, or een worse, ulFll parental needs. 1hey
are not only short changed on childhood but lose that
essential trusting nature.
It is that trusting nature that translates into a
balanced state in an adult human being. \e are both
independent and dependent. \e hae ree will and can

act independently. \e are connected to eery liing
creature, the earth and to unseen orces that we can
neer understand. 1his makes us dependent on each
other and the on the large cosmic moements o time
and change.
1he realization o your ulnerability and dependence,
and growing comortable with that realization, is a great
strength. It comes rom being childlike in this sense:
you are able to honestly lie in the present moment and
acknowledge your eelings and sensitiity.
\hen we get out o balance with our true nature is
when we experience pain. 1his is why it is so important
to consider all parts o our seles when we deal with
back problems. It is a physical condition and it needs to
be treated physically. It is also an emotional condition
so emotional issues o the past and present need to be
addressed. It is a spiritual condition in that the now
and deep connection to sel need to be established and
renewed or recoery.

I you hae an injured back, the Frst thing to do is to
go see a qualiFed health proessional or an assessment
and treatment o your condition. Pain needs to
be listened to and not ignored. 1his book and the
ideo that accompany this book are intended as an
adjunct to treatment and not a substitute or it. I use a
chiropractor and a licensed massage therapist mysel
and recommend them regularly to my students.
Once you hae an assessment by a health proessional,
ask them what speciFc ertebrae are out o alignment
or what speciFc area o the spine is causing you
discomort. \rite down the names o the ertebrae and
then in a quiet moment read the text that is assigned to
each ertebra under the section called 1he Lmotional
Component Vertebra by Vertebra.`
Read the text seeral times and then read the
aFrmations. \ou may not understand or agree with the
text or each ertebra but read it anyway with as little
judgment as possible. As your treatment progresses
with your doctor practice the aFrmations daily. Recite
them to yoursel mentally, in a whisper, and then out
loud seeral times on awakening. Right beore you go
to bed at night start by reciting them out loud, then in a
whisper, then silently mentally to yoursel. Reciting
them to yoursel during your normal workday is useul
as well. \rite them down and put them in the bathroom
next to your mirror. 1his way you can remind yoursel
to recite them in the morning and at night.

Pick a meditation. I hae made some suggestions at the
end o the text on each ertebra. Realize that in any
process o healing you are working with your whole
sel and not just your physical sel. 1he meditations are
included so that you can address issues and get help in
a super conscious or etheric way. Meditation not only
has a clearing eect on the subconscious mind and
emotions but it works in your energy Felds as well. 1he
descriptions o the meditations are toward the end o
this book. 1he meditation that you pick is really up
to you. I hae recommended certain meditations or
dierent regions o the back but I urge you to practice
each one and determine which one helps you the most.
I you cannot decide on any o the meditations, use the
mantra,music on the CD as a means o meditation.

In summation, here are the steps to ollow:
1. Visit your MD, Chiropractor or health
proessional or an assessment and treatment.
2. Read the text in the book that relates to the region
o the problem and the speciFc ertebra.
3. Do the aFrmations.
4. \ith permission rom your doctor, do the leal
your Back Now!` exercise series in the book and,
or DVD, ideo.
5. Pick a meditation and do it daily.
6. Listen to the CD as much as possible, day and
night. Consciously meditate on it daily.
. Ater your healing crises has passed, practice

1he nature o healing is a unique process that usually
inoles our little understood concepts. 1he Frst is:
the body heals itsel. 1he second is: the body itsel
has an intelligence and knows what it wants. 1he third
is: actual healing supersedes the notion o time. 1he
ourth is: the process o healing is beyond judgment,
it is neither good nor bad.
It is important to understand these concepts because
they will expand your perception o the healing process
and bring you to an understanding o the mind,body
connection. 1his understanding can allow the methods
in this book and on this ideo to be ery eectie.
Understanding yoursel and taking control o your
own healing process is the true path o wellness. Many
times in my yoga classes, I hae seen students make
breakthroughs by practicing similar techniques. It not
only can happen, but it does happen! Sometimes the
results seem miraculous. lere are the our concepts.
1. 1he body heals itsel. \hat eer the medium o
exchange or catalyst initiating the healing process, it
is the body doing the healing. 1he catalyst can be
allopathic medicine, herbs, homeopathic, physical
adjustment, or manipulation, laying on o hands
or mental,emotional realignment. It can be any o
hundreds o traditional or alternatie methods. In
essence, some kind o energy is exchanged, and the
physiological process takes place. \e oten mistake the
medicine or the healer or the cure when it is truly a
Sel-initiated process that allows the body to heal.

2. 1he body has an intelligence and knows what it
wants. 1his is the reason why a person is attracted to
a certain healing modality or healer. It is the reason
that an attuned person is attracted to certain oods and
tastes. 1here is always a reason and that reason may or
may not be reasonable. A more conscious and sensitie
awareness o what the body is actually asking or can
be deeloped with practice oer time. Kundalini \oga,
meditation, mindulness, and actiely listening to your
body will create a capacity o inner knowing and the
conFdence that the intelligence o the body and the
intuition are in synchrony.
3. 1he healing process supersedes the notion o time.
lealing doesn`t carry a watch. 1he old adage, It takes
two weeks to cure a cold and i your lucky ourteen
days,` is quite alse. I hae had colds or 15 minutes.
1his is the mechanism o miracles. \hen spontaneous
healing occurs eeryone is amazed. Our expectations
and our notions o time measurements are exploded.
\hen in actuality, it is just that the amount o or the
healing to take place has been dramatically reduced.
As a result, our perception o what has happened has
been altered and the change short circuits our time-
oriented rational mind. lence a miracle` is created.
It is also why a modality o healing can take more time
as well. \e want the quick results but sometimes it
takes more time. In herbal medicine it is ery common
or the eects to build and accumulate oer a period o
time. \hen an agent is introduced to a closed system

as a catalyst, then the reaction can take many steps ,and
more time, to occur. Once again, time is not a actor in
the large scheme o things. Len i it does take more
time, the moment o healing happens in a moment.
1he actual turning o the corner` is a spontaneous
eent, no matter how much time it took to get to that
point in time.
4. 1he process o healing is beyond judgment. \e
would loe to beliee that being healthy is good and
that illness and dis-ease are bad. 1his attitude is ery
natural and I subscribe to it mysel. loweer, I hae
talked to many people who hae gone through serious
diseases and say that the experience changed them in a
ery positie way. A relatie o mine had all the worldly
success one could imagine. le had a best selling noel,
a job with high pay, and he had serious innuence in
\ashington DC. le contracted bowel cancer and
later, ater his colostomy and recoery, he conFded in
me. le said \hen they tore me a new rectum, it was
the best thing that eer happened to me! I was killing
mysel with that lie and I am much happier now.`
Moing beyond judgment creates two important
aculties. 1he Frst is that it will cause a pause. \hen you
question what is happening on the surace, when you
realize that all is not what it seems to be, you must stop
and consider. Sometimes these pauses can last a ery
long time. 1his is good, in that instead o embarking
on your usual course o action, you must consider all
the options and discoer some new options beore you
act. Usually people come to this place ater ailing to

get the results they want rom their healers and healing
modalities. 1hese temporary setbacks are an inaluable
part o the learning process. One o my aorite
expressions is when you do not know what to do,
do nothing.` Siddartha ,Buddha, said that no matter
what happens, I can think, ast, and wait.` \hile you`re
waiting, do some inestigation and discoer dierent
ways to approach your healing process.
1he second aculty is an exalted state o meditatie
consciousness called Neutral Mind. Nothing is good
or bad, thinking makes it so.` Meditatie mind or
Neutral Mind allows the rational mind to take a rest
and the intuitie mind to take a turn. 1he intuitie part
o you knows ar more than you can consciously grasp.
It lets you know the consequence o any sequence
you initiate. It lets you know what to do and more
importantly when to do it. All successul endeaors are
goerned by good timing. 1he meditations in this book
can help you deelop this aculty as well as connect you
to your higher exalted sel.
