Essay title: Obama and the power to go to war Author's name: Chris Edelson Author's main argument? The authors main argument is President Obama has to bring military strike plans to Congress under the constitution. What is the purpose of this argument? Remember, purpose is not the claim but what kind of effect the writer wishes to have on the audience. The purpose of the argument is to inform the audience the presidents intentions for congressional approval for a military strike and publicize the general public of his actions. Who is the audience for this argument? The audience for this argument is introduced in paragraph one. The audience is described as the Obama administration. In addition, the general audience is the public with interest in political news. What kind of argument is (review discussion of stasis) The author used different stasis questions to strengthen his argument. The author used questions of facts, definition, cause or quality, and proposal. 1. Does the President have the right to initiate military strike without constitutional consent? (fact) 2. What is the chemical weapon used in Syria that is endangering civilians? (Definition) 3. Is Syria a big threat to the United States? What happens if we dont do anything? (Quality or cause) 4. Should action be taken? (Proposal) The ultimate stasis question for this writer is for the Congress to take action in helping resolve the issue or problem by not affiliate with Syria because the fact that we do not have a conflict with them. How does the writer make use of each of the different appeals? The author used pathos to cite and quote under the constitution. The author is a professor at the Universitys School of Public Affairs, teaching classes on the Constitution and presidential power that qualifies him to make a claim. The author demonstrated logos that President Obama is planning to take military actions against Syria without congressional approval. Thus, he added quotations from President Obama that that the presidents do not have the power under the constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nature. Thus, United States or we do not have a conflict with Syria. How does the language or style of the argument work to persuade? The author used different angles of reaching his point. He demonstrated cause and effect type situations
