6 BEAD STYLE | JANUARY 2014
Im already thinking about 2014 and looking forward to the fash and
sparkle of the new year. Speaking of sparkle, well show you how to
embellish with terrifc new crystal products. Need some arm candy
for a holiday party? Make a quick bangle by setting brilliant fat-back
crystals with colored gel (p. 30). Or try Debra Sauciers clever pendant
(p. 32): Arrange crystal drops in Crystal Clay, then brush on mica
powder to give the piece depth and dimension.
If youre looking to try a new technique, step into soutache (p. 60).
Jane Danley Cruz shows you how to shape, stack, stitch, and glue
these beautiful braids along with 10 gorgeous earring designs.
Maybe this will be the year you start your own business. If so, were here
to help! Jean Yates is debuting her new column, String & Sell (p. 52).
With friendly and knowledgeable advice, shell walk you through selling
your handmade jewelry. This issue, she covers the basics youll need
to get started.
I couldnt close out the year without also saying goodbye to my mistakes:
In our November issues Bright on! fnds from the Bead&Button Show,
I listed the wrong URL for the Venetian beads. You can fnd the beads at
bellavenetianbeads.com. I regret the error and any confusion it caused.
And now were moving on. Whether youre inspired by new products,
new techniques, or new experiences, cheers to a sparkling 2014!

Bling to string
Two beaders, two ways: Strong finishing
I love the versatility
of bullion wire!
Naomi Fujimoto
Youll often see pearl necklaces
fnished with French (bullion)
wire. Bullion is a fnely coiled
wire that protects the stringing
material from abrasion. One
advantage of bullion wire is its
adaptability: Because its sold
in long strands, you can cut it
to the exact length you need, so its great for large loops.
You can even fnd it in bright colors if you want to match
beading wire hues for a coordinated fnishing.
Wire Guardians are my
go-to for protecting
beading wire.
Kelsey Lawler
Professionally made jewelry
comes down to the details;
consider both structural integrity
and a clean look, even up close.
To achieve both strength and
polish, string a Wire Guardian
before attaching a clasp. Wire
Guardians protect fexible beading
wire from undue wear, preventing the strands from eventually
breaking. Theres nothing more professional than jewelry that
stands the test of time.

Substitute red glass for
garnets, then take the design
modern or vintage, based on
your choices in bezels and
bead caps. Garnet is meant
to protect the wearer during
travel, so pack the jewels for
your winter vacation, too.
February
Amethyst brings courage,
so go for a bold organic
bib necklace or statement
earrings. (Try vitrail light
teardrops if you like pink
amethyst.) Whatever you
wear, this gem will give
you the confdence you
need to turn some heads.
March
The aquamarine girls options
range from earthy nuggets
on leather to a luxe collar with
light azore crystals which
are a closer color match to
the real stone. These pure
and soothing jewels will help
you fnd enlightenment in the
year ahead.

As a diamond girl you
value constancy, but you
can venture into new style
territory with an on-trend
bracelet: Wrap vibrant
ribbon around cup chain
in an armful of bangles, or
embellish with waxed linen
cord in a contrasting color.
May
Emerald has many powers,
but what could be more
important than soothing a
troubled mind? Make wise
(and affordable) fashion
choices with options in Lucite
or Czech glass. Or connect
deep green crystals and
channel-set charms in
cascading earrings. Classic
and stylish? Good thinking!
June
Pearls symbolize purity and
innocence. Add to your
repertoire of classics with
a multistrand coin pearl
necklace. Or string outside
the style box with a rainbow
of stick pearls or keshis (p. 68).
July
Youre never at a loss for
passion: Channel that high
energy into a crystal charm
bracelet with brilliantly
colored ruby briolettes.
Fun options like chatons or
Crystal Clay will also help
enhance your natural glow.
August
If youre trying to gain clarity
or see a new perspective,
peridot can help. The stones
fresh green hue lights up
designs galore! Mix these
affordable stones with
turquoise, or add purple and
berry accents in a beautiful
complementary palette.
September
Sapphire represents a mix
of traits: power, kindness,
wisdom, faith. Be true-blue
with crystals in light and dark
sapphire. Or make jewelry
thats as multifaceted as
you are the gemstone is
available in just about every
color, so try an ombr strand.
October
In the opal, you can see all
colors. Play up the abundance
with opal crystals in many
different shades. Or string
sea glass for an opalescent
effect. Of course, there are
always blue or pink Peruvian
opals plenty of options if
you enjoy a change in colors
(or viewpoints!).
November
Topaz is said to direct energy
where its needed most. Try
light Colorado topaz crystals
or even blue topaz: Its a
refreshing change from
golden brown and can help
you become a better
negotiator good if youre
a strong-willed Scorpio.
December
Turquoise can both calm and
reenergize. Go neutral with
beads to match the stones
matrixing, or layer bright
chatons for a fun pop of color.
Just dont overdo it: Too much
turquoise is said to scatter
your thoughts!

I got the idea for this
design from Anna Draeger,
who was an associate editor
at Bead&Button. She once
designed a simple crystal

I whipped up my own version
with leftovers from my knotted
statement necklace (p. 56). Mine

grey crystals, but you can also string a
beautiful contrast with any of the colorful
wire available. Naomi Fujimoto

Craft a crystal p
Embed crystal drops in clay to create a brilliant necklace
by Debra Saucier
Heres a new use for crystals: Flip them upside down and set them in a bezel
with clay. I played with different ideas for this pendant and liked polygon drops
the best; they have clean angles that allow the color of the clay and mica
powder to reflect intensely through the crystal. The finished pendant is a tribute
to the crystal formations found in nature.

I love the steampunk style of leather and gears the two go hand-in-hand. I also enjoy
playing with juxtaposition for a more unexpected look, so I threw a cosmic crystal into
the mix. The result is casual sophistication: an everyday look for a steampunk princess.
Mark
When making marks on a piece
of dark leather, use a metallic pen
so the dots show up.
Rivet
These two-part rivets from
TierraCast make riveting easy!
Once youve stacked your rivet
halves and components, use your
ngers to pinch the stack together;
the rivet will lock into place even
before you begin to hammer.
Fit
The crystal embellishment is
meant to be loose when the leather
is laid at. When the bracelet is
curved around your wrist, the
crystal link will then be taut against
the leather.

Ironing out
the details
Make sure the iron is hot before
you begin.
After you remove the iron, app|y
additiona| pressure with a c|ean, soft
c|oth for 5 to 10 seconds or unti| the
mesh has cooled to hand-warm. The
adhesive should lightly penetrate the
ribbon and be somewhat visib|e on
the reverse side.
If the adhesive doesn't ho|d, repeat
the entire ironing process, ho|ding
the iron for 30 to 35 seconds.
Do not use an iron with steam
vents.
Hot Fix adhesive requires a 24-hour
curing time. You can hand wash the
piece after this period, if necessary.

On the eye pin, string a cone and
a rondelle. Make the first half of

Ive worked with silk ribbons for years. Combining them
with crystal mesh just made good fashion sense. You can
wear this as a choker, a bracelet, or even as a headband
channeling your inner gypsy, of course! The great thing
is, the mesh comes with a Hot Fix adhesive, so theres no
sewing involved. Iron on!

Multistrand jewelry
gets a fancy nishing
by Kelsey Lawler
Ive been all about emerald this past
year. Im sure that even if Pantone picks
another pretty hue come January, Ill
still be donning green. These dyed jade
rounds and rondelles are too gorgeous
to wear for only one season. Add a
sparkling box clasp and these pieces
do tend toward holiday, but I plan to
take them into 2014 and beyond. With
such dazzling jewels in tow, its sure to
be a fabulous new year!
WHAT YOULL LEARN
stringing multistrand jewelry

For the middle
strand, repeat the
pattern in step 1,
stringing it 1 in.
(2.5 cm) longer than
the shortest strand.
Repeat for the longest
strand, stringing it
2 in. (5 cm) longer
than the middle strand
(Evening out, p. 48).
On each end of each
strand, string: rondelle,
crimp bead, rondelle,
Wire Guardian, the
corresponding loop of
half of a box clasp (Clasp,
then crimp, p. 48). Go
back through the beads
just strung and tighten
the wires. Crimp the crimp
beads (Basics, p. 78)
and trim the excess wire.
Use chainnose or
crimping pliers to close
a crimp cover over
each crimp.
OFDLMBDF r Cut three pieces of beading wire, each
3 in. (7.6 cm) longer than the previous piece. For the
shortest strand, string a round bead and a rondelle.
Repeat, interspersing crystals as desired (All aboard!,
p. 48), until the strand is within 1 in. (3.8 cm) of the
finished length. End with a round.

As youre stringing, lay the strands
on a bead board to see how the
rounds line up and where to
intersperse crystals. I staggered
crystals about every 1 in.

Evening out
Before nishing the necklace,
make sure all of the strands line
up at the desired length on your
bead board. If necessary, string
a rondelle on each end to even
things out.
Clasp, then crimp
When working with a multistrand
box clasp: Crimp the strands on
one side of the clasp, then close the
clasp and crimp the remaining ends.
This allows you to curve the strands
so you dont over-tighten and crowd
the beads.
CSBDFMFU r Cut three
pieces of beading
wire (Basics, p. 78).
On each wire, string
three pearls and a
crystal. Repeat two
or three times, then
string three pearls.
On each end of each

the corresponding loop
of half of a clasp (Clasp,
then crimp, below). Go back
through the beads just strung
and tighten the wire. Crimp
the crimp beads (Basics)

Getting started
What youll need to set up an online shop

by Jean Yates
1
Think about the big
picture before you
dive in. Etsy seller
Lorelei Eurto, whose
brand also includes
a blog and videos, says,
Pick a clever business name
that will be easy for shoppers
to remember. Keep it short
and avoid hyphens.
2
Dont forget
business cards:
At a minimum, list
your shop name
and URL. Yes,
youre selling online, but its
handy to give your card to
people who admire your
jewelry in person. You can
also include business cards
in your shipments; theyre
handy for little thank-you
notes, too.
3
Make sure the
photos you use
really show off
your jewelry.
Lorelei, who has
been selling for seven years,
stresses the importance of
great photography: This
little element can make all
the difference! I see so many
people trying to start their
online businesses and they
have beautiful jewelry, but
are failing at portraying it as
such. Dont worry, though
well bring you more
photography tips in an
upcoming column. For
now, visit ArtJewelryMag
.com for Associate Editor
Annie Penningtons Quick
tips for taking great photos.

4
Pricing your
jewelry can be
difficult. One
basic way to price:
Add the costs
of materials, labor, and
overhead, then double that
number for a retail price.
But theres an emotional
aspect to pricing, too. For
example, Alissa Smiths most
popular sellers are her druzy
stud earrings, most of which
are in the mid-$20 range.
She has been told her prices
are too low, but thats a
conscious choice: I am
pricing my jewelry in a
way that is affordable and
enjoyable, instead of a
stressful experience. I try
to make everything as
reasonable as possible.
Once upon a time, you simply learned jewelry-making
techniques. Now youre way beyond that. You have top-
notch skills and workmanship, and youve even developed
your own signature style. Your designs are attracting
attention. So. How do you turn your hobby into a business
where youre selling to a bigger market than friends of
friends? Here are your business basics.

3 Etsy sellers: What I wish Id known
I wouldve probably waited a little
longer before getting my shop up
and running. Ive learned things
along the way such as
photography, pricing, branding my
business, and picking a business
name that couldve made a big
difference in my success early on.
Lorelei Eurto
5
If youre going to
sell online, PayPal
is a must. And
before you jump
into online selling,
do a little research before
deciding on your shipping
policies. When can a buyer
expect you to ship their
purchase? Can you
accommodate requests
for upgraded shipping?
Long term, how will you
handle the production and
shipping demands of a
thriving business? Natsuko
Hanks has sold more than
3,000 pieces in her six years
on Etsy. She didnt think
about the volume of orders
when she started: I didnt
even know I could have a
business when I started my
shop; it was just a place to
show off my jewelry. I was
so surprised when I had my
first order!
6
Remember that
your brand is
about more than
just your jewelry.
Lorelei suggests:
Keep a cohesive look with
all of your branding: your
blog, business cards, jewelry
tags, website, and online
shops. Your packaging will
also give buyers a sense of
your brand, so find or make
something to reflect that.
After youve mailed the
goodies, file all of your
shipping records in one
place. Create a dedicated
space for preparing and
managing shipments.
And give yourself time for
success. Alissa, who sells
her jewelry full time, says,
I find it fun and challenging
to learn new things every
day. I am slowly but surely
improving my shop and
trying to branch out into new
markets. So keep going!

Tie up affordable

stunning necklace
by Naomi Fujimoto
With its classic styling, a knotted necklace can make the
rounds from work to dinner to holiday party. But my favorite
one, a black and grey number by Rosantica, costs upwards
of $500. So I decided to make my own. These Chinese
crystals cast a brilliant sparkle, and I love the icy, wintry
feel of the pale colors (Color notes, page 58). You can also
create your own palette: Try a single color, dark beads with
a few light strands as highlights, or even a two-tone knot.

Transfer student
Think of transferring rather
than stringing the beads
from the original strand to your
beading wire. Youll save a lot
of time. Also, make sure to trim
the original strand as you go.
Otherwise it will start to buckle,
making it harder to transfer the
beads without dropping any.

Color notes
For my 20-strander, I strung eight
strands each of grey and lavender
crystals. Because the purple crystals
were more intensely hued, I strung only
four strands of those. When youre at
your local bead shop, play with the
colors to see what proportions you like.
I spent a lot of time (loosely) knotting
strands until I found the
combination I liked.

Create a bevy of earrings with these versatile ber braids

Its all the braided rage! Soutache is a narrow, flat, decorative braid formed by thin

the cabochon and attach the cup chain.
Allow to dry. Trim the backing close to

Working on the back,
sew through the
stack at the top of the
6 mm bead. Make a few
stitches, then stitch a

soldered jump ring to the
back of the stack.
13
Go across the back
of the piece and sew
through to the front between
the purple and black braids
on one side of the join from
step 5. String a 150 seed
bead, an 80, and a 150, and
sew down between the
braids on the other side of
the join. Tie a few knots on
the back to secure, and trim
the excess thread.
14
Use a toothpick to
apply glue to the
back, spreading the glue to
the edges. Place the piece
on the back of a piece of
backing. Use your fingers
to even out the shape
(Finishing touches, p. 63).
If you find a gap, dab a
toothpick with glue
and slide it between the
piece and the backing.
15
Allow to dry
completely. Trim
the backing close to the
piece.
16
Open the loop of an
earring wire (Basics)
and attach the dangle.
Close the loop.

Soutache summarized
shaping
To create curves in a braid or
stack, adjust the length of the
stitches through the center
groove, sewing short stitches
on the inside of the curve and
longer stitches on the outside.
Dont pull too hard or the braid
will buckle.
stacking
To ensure the braids curve in a pleasing way, place one on top of the other so
the grain in each braid points in the same direction.
joining
Typically, youll join a braid or a stack of braids where it comes together around
a bead or cabochon. Sew through the stack on one side of the join, then sew
back and forth through both stacks several times to reinforce.
ending a stack
Always pull the stack to the back of your piece, making a couple of tiny tacking
stitches from the back to the front of the piece. On the back, wrap the thread
around the end of the braid(s) several times and make a few more tiny stitches.
Trim the ends of the stack close to the wraps.
fnishing touches
Cover the thread and fraying ends of the braid by gluing your piece to an
Ultrasuede backing. Apply a thin coat of glue, making sure the glue does not
ooze out between the beads or the edge of the soutache. If your piece is a bit
loose, you can control the shape and smooth it out. Once the glue has dried,
trim the backing close to the soutache, but not so close that you can see the
soutache from the back. A sharp pair of embroidery scissors works best for
getting in the curves and crevices.

BEJEWELED COLLAR
Dress up a simple collar with crystals
by Jane Danley Cruz
The Peter Pan collar is all grown up and styled for sophistication. These embellished
accessories are chic and easy no sewing involved! Just make sure to use 100% wool,
boiled wool, Ultrasuede, or another non-fraying fabric, and watch your designs take flight.
WHAT YOULL LEARN
applying Hot Fix crystals

1
DPMMBS r Draw and cut out a collar
template. Place the template on
the back of a piece of felt and trace
around it with a permanent marker.
2
Remove the template and cut
out the collar. Cut out the second
half of the collar.
3
Using a leather punch or scissors,
punch a hole near the narrow
end of each half.
4
Allow the Hot Fix crystal tool
to heat up for several minutes.
Arrange flat-back crystals as desired.
To affix the crystals: Press the tool
on top of the crystal and hold for 15
to 18 seconds with larger crystals or
6 to 7 seconds with smaller crystals.
5
Cut two 18-in. (46 cm) pieces
of ribbon. Thread each ribbon
through the hole of a collar half and
fold it back. Glue the end of the
ribbon, making sure to work on the
back side of the collar. Overlap the
front of the collar halves and glue
them together.

About me
I grew up on the island of Java in the Indonesian
archipelago and frst came to the U.S. as a
bright-eyed engineering student. Currently I live
in Rhode Island with my husband in our happy
home, where I introduced him to a rice cooker
and he introduced me to a toaster.
My jewelry-making start
I started with needing an artistic outlet and took
a one-hour jewelry class at a local bead store.
That was my point of no return I got hooked.
I think I have found my dream job.
My advice for beginners
When you face an artistic block, just start
making anything or start sketching. Theres
something about moving your hands that
also gets your creativity fowing.
My inspiration
I used to scuba dive in Indonesia quite a bit
and enjoy watching the colorful tropical fsh.
So for colors, I get inspiration from those
fsh and from fruits and vegetables in my
kitchen. As for shapes, I get inspiration from
nature and materials I use such as stones
and wire. Usually the shape I start with
evolves into something different.
What does serasi mean?
My Etsy shop is Serasi Jewelry. Serasi
is an Indonesian expression for harmonious
coexistence of personalities and styles.
Indonesias rich, laid back, and diverse
culture embraces this philosophy in every
way, ensuring that life transpires in balance.

Wire wonders
Bend, loop, and weave wire for wearable works of art
Thoughtfully designed and expertly crafted, Rosa
Czarnomskis jewelry has completely charmed us.
These gold and silver leaf necklaces perfectly capture
her signature aesthetic; her jewelry makes a striking
statement without being loud or overwrought. Each
ethereal piece is precise yet organic, and the effect
lends an air of grace and poise to the wearer.

Secrets of wire success
www.BeadStyleMag.com 73
My #1 tip for wirework
Its easier to use shorter pieces
when weaving with thin wire.
Working in segments prevents
the wire from tangling, coiling,
or kinking. Just start with a new
piece of wire when your last
piece ends, making sure to tidy
up each wire end.

The allure of asymmetry
Someone once told me that
a good design should have an
element of surprise, whether its
in color, shape, or composition.
Asymmetry is a great way to add
this element. Once you have all
your components, start with a
symmetrical arrangement, then
tweak it shift components,
flip it, look at it from a different
angle, play with it, and resist the
temptation to balance it unless
you have to.

Picking a palette
I like combining shiny and matte
textures in my designs. With
beads, it translates to combining
transparent or translucent (such
as citrine or amethyst) with
opaque (such as turquoise or
pearl). As for colors, the choice
comes naturally whatever feels
right. Using a color wheel as your
guide can help you figure out
which colors mix harmoniously.

Focal-point focus
For these necklaces, the focal
component came first, then the
side links. I wanted to add volume
to the focal component; weaving
wire through it was the easiest
way. Only after the necklace was
finished did I notice how flat the
entire thing was. That was when
I decided to curve the focal piece
to add even more volume. I left
the side leaves bare because,
really, it was dinner time.

Wiggle room
When making a single strand necklace,
my go-to spacer is a 4 mm round or
bicone crystal, but 4 mms didnt work
this time. The large square beads need
more wiggle room so they dont touch
the 20 mms; 8 mm rondelle crystals do
the trick!

Cutting exible beading wire
1 Decide how long you want your necklace
to be. Add 6 in. (15 cm) and cut a piece of
beading wire to that length.
Flattened crimp
2 Hold the crimp bead with the tip of your
chainnose pliers. Squeeze the pliers frmly
to fatten the crimp bead. Tug the clasp to
make sure the crimp has a solid grip on the
wire. If the wire slides, remove the crimp
bead and repeat with a new crimp bead.
3 The fattened crimp.
Folded crimp
4 Position the crimp bead in the notch
closest to the crimping pliers handle.
5 Separate the wires and frmly squeeze
the crimp bead.
6 Move the crimp bead into the notch at
the pliers tip. Squeeze the pliers, folding
the bead in half at the indentation.
7 The folded crimp.
Opening a jump ring or loop
8 Hold the jump ring or loop with chainnose
and roundnose pliers or two pairs of
chainnose pliers.
9 To open the jump ring or loop, bring one
pair of pliers toward you.
10 The open jump ring. Reverse the steps
to close.
Attaching a clasp
11 For a two-piece clasp, on each end,
string: spacer, crimp bead, spacer,
Wire Guardian (optional), half of the clasp.
Check the ft, and add or remove beads
if necessary. Go back through the beads
just strung and tighten the wire. Crimp
the crimp bead and trim the excess wire.
12 Or, follow step 11 to attach a lobster
claw clasp on one end and a soldered
jump ring or chain extender on the other.
Square knot
13 Cross the left end over and under the
right end.
14 Cross the right end over and under the

90 BEAD STYLE | JANUARY 2014
Bead inspired
I came across an Eleanor Roosevelt quote: Friends you and me. You
brought another friend, and then there were three. We started our
group, our circle of friends, and like that circle, there is no beginning
or end. I designed a collection around this idea. This necklace with
different shapes and sizes of crocheted circles represents friendship
diversity. Rosa Czarnomski (see more on page 72)
