Winter Solstice Festival 2013

[Mourne Cooley Gullion Geotourism in partnership with Ring of Gullion]


Winter Solstice Festival 2013 aims to highlight the special geology and archaeology of the passage tomb at Slieve Gullion which is aligned to the setting sun of the Winter Solstice. Taking place from Thursday 19th-Sunday 22nd December at Slieve Gullion, the festival will include guided walks & hikes, lectures & information sessions, and Irish language activities.

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

Programme of Events
Thursday 19th December
12-2pm Mourne Cooley Gullion Meet & Greet Event at the Hawthorn Suite Slieve Gullion. With a special focus on the geology, geomorphology archaeology of Gullion, this festive event will offer an opportunity to meet the staff of Mourne Cooley Gullion Geotourism and talk about the project in an informal setting, Light refreshments will be served. This is a FREE event. Contact Vanessa Ryan for more details. 2.30pm Guided Hike to the Summit of Slieve Gullion FREE but booking essential Book through www.ringofgullion.org or contact Therese Hamill for more details. 5pm FREE Lecture on the geology and archaeology of Gullion. This lecture will be jointly delivered by Mourne Cooley Gullion Geotourism Project geologist, Dr. Siobhn E. Power and archaeologist, Dr. Vanessa Ryan. It will include a PowerPoint presentation of some of the most beautiful and iconic geological and archaeological sites in the Ring of Gullion and will focus on the alignment of the pre-historic tombs of Gullion. Friday 20th December


2pm Guided geology & archaeology walk to Clonlum and Killeavy. This walk will be led by Dr. Siobhn E. Power & Dr. Vanessa Ryan and will include two visits to the prehistoric site at Clonlum and the medieval site at Killeavy. The walk is FREE and will depart from the Courtyard at Slieve Gullion. Booking essential as numbers are limited.
