For the first time in the history of MAN Diesel & Turbo a joint

Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) system the MARC_HRS

TM
was
presented at the SMM 2010 in Hamburg, Germany.
The MAN Diesel & Turbo waste heat
recovery concept provides modularized
power generation packages so that an
optimum configuration can be reached
for all typical MAN B&W two-stroke main
engine types. Typical installations are
VLCCs, bulk carriers and specific
medium-to-large container vessels. In
these applications the additional power
recovered from the exhaust heat can
be utilized directly by the main electric
consumers on the vessel. It can also be
used for direct propulsion where a shaft
power take-in (PTI) gear or shaft motor is
applied.

The large attendance at the SMM might
be seen as a sign among others that
the marine market is recovering and the
demand with respect to green techno-
logies is growing. WHR and marine
green technologies are remarkable
pillars of MAN Diesel & Turbo synergistic
resources, especially for the future imple-
mentation of exhaust gas recirculation
(EGR) equipment. If the market would
grow as forecasted, this combination of
joint expertise might lead to a competitive
advantage since MAN Diesel & Turbo
is in a position to offer a broad portfolio
of green engine room technologies from
one source.
The MARC_HRS
TM
power generation
package supplied by MAN Diesel & Turbo
includes the complete train-components
such as power turbine, steam turbine
and gearboxes from one supplier. The
system is capable of utilizing both excess
exhaust energy not required for turbo-
charging and waste heat in the exhaust
gas after turbochargers. While excess
exhaust directly drives a power turbine,
waste heat is recovered in a steam
boiler. The steam is then expanded in a
steam turbine. Both the power turbine
and the steam turbine drive a genera-
tor. Up to 13% additional power can be
recovered by optimizing all individual
system components. Maximum recovery
efficiency can be utilized within the main
engine load range of 7585% which
reflects the normal cruising speed range
of target applications.
With the MARC_HRS
TM
package
MAN Diesel & Turbo presents a full
waste heat recovery system for sea-
going ships which, in combination with
the highly efficient turbocharger series
TCA, can reduce fuel consumption and
CO
2
emissions by up to 13%. This is
a unique step forward in engine fuel
efficiency, unattainable to this extent by
other systems.
