Lab 16 (Finding the Specific Heat Capacity of Copper)

Purpose (etermine the specific heat capacity of copper shot and compare the e)perimental *alue to the accepted *alue of 0.38$ '+g,C. Materials -pron "optional# .oggles /ing stand 0hermometer clamp 0hermometers "2# Procedures 1. 4ut on your safety goggles. 2. 7ill the 800 m3 with a!out %00 m3 to $00 m3 of tap water and place the !eaker on the hot plate. 8ake sure the hot plate is plugged into an outlet and the power is on with the heat setting turned to its ma)imum position. 3. 4lace the e*aporating dish on the electronic !alance and re9ero the !alance !y pressing the :;n< or :0are< !utton. 0he !alance should now read 0.00 g with the e*aporating dish on it. -dd 110 to 125 g of copper shot to the dish. /ecord the e)act mass of the copper shot as mCu in your data ta!le. 4. 4lace one of your thermometers in the large test tu!e and pour the copper shot you =ust massed into the test tu!e so the shot surrounds the thermometer. 8ake sure no copper shot is spilled in this process otherwise you will need to repeat step >3. S4F5!6 N7!5? (o @;0 try to =am the thermometer into the copper shot as this may !reak the thermometer. 5. 4lace the large test tu!e& copper shot& and thermometer setAup into the water that is !eing heated on the hot plate. %. 4lace the 1tyrofoam cup on the electronic !alance and re9ero the !alance !y pressing the :;n< or :0are< !utton. 0he !alance should now read 0.00 g with the 1tyrofoam cup on it. 7ill the 1tyrofoam cup a!out half full of tap water and place it !ack on the electronic !alance. /ecord the e)act mass of the water as mwater in your data ta!le. $. 4lace the second thermometer in the thermometer clamp and attach it to the ring stand. 3ower the thermometer into the water in the 1tyrofoam cup. 8ake sure the thermometer !ul! is at a!out 2 cm off the !ottom. /ecord the initial temperature of the water as 0i "water#. 8. Continue heating the large test tu!e with the copper shot until the temperature is 90.0 C or higher. 9. 4repare to transfer the shot to the water !y tearing off some paper towel and make a hot pad for the large test tu!e. -lso& place your stirring rod into the water so you will !e ready to stir the mi)ture. 10. /ecord the initial temperature of the hot copper in your data ta!le as 0i"Cu#. /emo*e the thermometer from the large test tu!e with copper shot and using the paper towel as a hot pad& uickly transfer the copper shot to the water in the 1tyrofoam cup. Bmmediately stir the mi)ture to make sure the heat is transferred e*enly to the water and no metal is touching the !ul! of the thermometer. Catch the temperature on the thermometer in the 1tyrofoam cup until it stays constant. /ecord this temperature as the final temperature for the water and the copper metal shot represented as 0f "water# and 0f "Cu#. 11. Clean up the mi)ture of water and copper shot as directed !y your teacher. 4lease do not dump down the sink& as the copper shot will clog the drains. 12. 8ake sure that all e uipment is returned to its proper place clean and dry. 1tyrofoam cup 2eaker "400 m3# 2eaker "800 m3# 4lastic cup "small# Copper metal shot 5ot plate 0est tu!e "3arge# 6*aporating dish used as a weighing tray 1tirring rod "glass#

Post-Lab =%estions 1. - student spills some copper metal shot during the transfer into the test tu!e and decides not to mass the sample again. Cill this mistake cause the specific heat of copper to !e higher or lower than e)pectedE 6)plain.

2. 0he transfer of the hot copper shot to the water takes o*er a minute for a student to complete. 5ow will this loss of heat to the room affect their final result for the specific heat of copperE Cill it !e higher or lower than e)pectedE 6)plain.
