This is based mostly on the 'Make a Jazz Noise Here' version, but
it should be pretty similar to other versions - it's usually the rhythm
of the bits that changes, rather than the notes themselves.
It might be an idea to listen to the track from 'Jazz Noise ...' and
follow the tab just so you know where the different sections come in.
There are quite a few time changes - I've tried to indicate some
of them (i.e fast bit, slow bit, etc) but it's best if you get
used to the track a little, then it should be clear how the tab
works.

The sequence goes round and round - it goes down a semitone at a time, then
when you get to G you move back up to D and start going down again ...

This is a classic Zappa song - fast, manic, exhilarating tune, quirky


harmonies and rhythmns and lots of his favourite interval - the 4th !
The instrument names I've written down obviously refer to the Yellow
Shark version.
I've tabbed the different variations of the main tune rather than try
and do the whole piece.
To save repeating myself and creating a huge long file,
I've just tabbed out the parts in the variations that are
different from the previous versions.
Once you've got the first two bits sussed (what I've called
tune 1A and 1B) the rest is nearly all repeats of this
with literally just a handful of notes changed.
I've labelled the different lines for tunes 1A and 1B and then just
referred to these later on - e.g in the 3rd tune I've just typed
out one new line and then put - repeat lines 2A to 12A.
I hope this is easy enough to follow.
The rhythmn for this is basically all 8th notes (quavers if you prefer).
Note that the first 8th notes of most bars is a rest - so a lot of
the phrases have 7 notes.
I find it sounds best when you pick all the notes individually rather
than use hammer-ons or pull-offs. If you use one finger per fret
(1st finger - 9th fret, 2nd finger - 10th fret etc) then you can play about
90% of it without changing position.

its in C#m instead of Bm. There is also a two part harmony going with
a few 'quirky' notes stuck in.

about right. If you want to be *really* picky, there is a note missed
out from line 6A (the third note - 9th fret G string).

To get the hang of the rhythm here all I can suggest is practise
a lot ! After a lot of careful listening I was able to play along
up to this point - but it's hard to keep it going for the whole section!
It's made easier by the fact that the percussion beats out a steady
4/4 beat throughout this section to use as a reference.
The stuff that I've left out after here is quite a large chunk.
After a while the whole ensemble plays this little tune in unison :

An excellent commentary on religion and politics (this album has some of
the best ever on this subject, IMHO). Its fun to sing too.
The song is fairly straight-forward with only one main progression. But the
bridge fixes anyone who thought they found and easy one. It has a steady
pulse throughout (the lower staff) at the same tempo as the rest of the
song, but Frank decided to sing everything a bit faster, just for fun I
guess ;). I have tried to notate it as clearly as possible but it simply
boils down to singing, in the first phrase, 20 eighth notes in the space
of 14 at the original tempo. The second has 15 over 10, third has 17 over
14 and the last again has 15 over 10. You MUST listen to the song itself
to get the feel of this. My explanation makes it sound harder than it is
but I thought I'd give you my interpretation of what he's doing, for
anyone else who likes to know this kind of thing..:)
*The 7th bar of the VERSE (E) is in 2/4.

Album: Them or Us (#40, 10/18/84)
This tune is a perfect example of the type of stuff Steve Vai had to put
up with while he was working for Frank. Steve executes the guitar lines
nicely but the coolest parts are the arpeggiated sections originally
played by percussionist Ed Mann. The piece rocks so if you've never
heard it and you like Steve's stuff find a copy of this. (Them or Us
also has the song Stevie's Spanking commemorating Vai's encounter with
Laurel and her favorite _device_ ...;)
The song is not particularly fast (about 112) but requires some decent
strict alternate picking to get everything in time and even.
The time signatures are written under the bar. Don't let the weird ones
scare you. Most of the time the notes are eighths or sixteenths evenly
played over the bar; Frank was very good at making them unobtrusive.
The "%" indicates that the previous bar is repeated once.

These parts are based on the original version of Montana (no whipping
floss here!). I've notated the intro and the other interesting melodies
of the tune but the highlight is the Interlude section. While performed
vocally on the album, it (mostly) translates well to the guitar but is
really fun to play, so try it! As with any TAB there is no rhythmic
notation so you HAVE to listen to the song to get it right. Watch out

Mr Green Genes is a really easy tune to play, and it is
also a good one to illustrate basic elements of harmony
and melody. Here is my arrangement, kind of a composite

This is a basic song made particularly cool by FZ's subtle use of time
signature changes. When you listen to the song they don't jump out at you
but they make the difference between an average tune and one that's got
something about it. The changes are in the verse so I put the time under
each bar to keep things straight. Play the odd eighth bars with steady
eighth note strums to accent the shifting time. They should all be steady
but just an unusual number of strums.

This is a cool piece about the music biz and FZ's impression of session
players. This is a fun song to play so if you've never heard it dig up
a copy of FZMMP, well worth it with some excellent, short Synclavier comps.
Some of the chord in this one are questionable. Especially the C/F/Ami/Dmi.
I played with this one a lot before I settled on those chords. Some other
options include G/F/C/Dmi and C/Bb/Ami/G. The B/F#/C#/G... section is
also very weird. These chords work with the melody but harmonically aren't
the greatest in the song (unless you like that sorta thing :0) If you
find alternates let me know.
This song has subjective chords because the progressions are implied
by the melody only. There are no clear chord parts being played.

I think there's already a version of this at Nevada. My tab is quite


similar in terms of the notes used, but the strings and fret numbers
I use are quite different. I think this way it's a lot easier to play
it so you can leave the notes to sustain a little.
This is based more on the live versions of the track than the studio
version.
There's one bit which is quite hard to pull off using just one guitar
- if you have a bass and a guitar you can split the part up to make it
work, but if you're just playing on your own it's a bit tricky so
I've tabbed an alternative part for these shapes - It just uses an
alternative shape for the same chord - it isn't exactly what's on the
record, but it works well and is nice and easy to play.
For this bit I've used curly brackets { to indicate the alternative
lines of TAB - the top line is the 'true' line, the bottom line is
the easier one.
