Fortunately, a lack of detailed knowledge is no barrier to enjoyment and, almost without exception, everyone likes snowdrops. They are just there, as they have always been; they require no specialist skills or equipment, and with gardens and shows to visit, their admirers do not even have to own any snowdrops themselves. As plants go, snowdrops are hugely accessible. They are also pleasantly easy-going. Sure, a spot of attention is appreciated a bit of feeding here, a bit of division thereand they will perform better for it, but even in a regimen of neglect they will still gently spread, owering reliably every year. As a collectors item, snowdrops lend themselves to modern living. They dont require any acreage, unlike cultivars of magnolias, apple trees, or even asters and their perennial ilk. Their presence not only looks interesting and attractive juxtaposed with many other plants, but against nonplant parts of a garden like a walkway, a patio, rocks and stones, or other hard solid surfaces. Now lets look at some of the more common or popular uses rst. To oversimplify, sedums have two primary uses in the garden. The rst is as a border plant; the second is as a groundcover. Some sedums may be used both ways.
Border Sedums
The rst major use of sedums is as border plants. Here we are talking about the larger, upright-growing perennial types. These are in their glory in the fall, which is why they are sometimes called autumn sedums. Botanists have now set them apart in their own genus, Hylotelephium. The most familiar and popular one, of course, is Autumn Joy Hylotelephium Herbstfreude. This resilient plant has true four-season appeal, emerging in spring as a blue-green dome with toothed foliage, developing light green broccoli-like buds in mid to late summer, and turning pink to red in fall and nally to cinnamon brown as the ower fades to a dried stem by winter. All hylotelephiums follow this same cycle, though foliage and ower colors vary. You can make a gorgeous fall border vignetteas landscape designers term simple, effective plant combinationswith border sedums and other perennials that are at their best at that time of year. The rich shades of the owerheads and the oftencolorful leaves blend very well with plants of red, yellow, or purple owers or foliage. Alternatively, try a sedumsonly display, mixing a few closely related species or cultivars for a blend of colors. This tack results in a handsome, low-maintenance ribbon of color, or brings a multihued, tapestry-like look to a larger or broader bed. There are many outstanding choices nowadays and more coming out all the time, all of which create beautiful displays. The following are a few my favorite combinations, which you can follow or use as inspiration for your own compositions.

The authors then put this information into context and offer gardeners design strategies to implement into a home garden. Helpful charts offer suggested plants, including natives and non-natives, for each region. Doug Tallamys award-winning Bringing Nature Home revealed the pressing need for a biodiverse home landscape. In a gorgeously illustrated, inspirational, and practical way, The Living Landscape supports the important message by showing gardeners how to make it happen.

Deep-Rooted Wisdom
Skills and Stories from Generations of Gardeners
AUGUSTUS JENKINS FARMER
Augustus Jenkins Farmer (aka Jenks) started gardening in the third grade in a corner of the family farm lled with rocks, scrap metal, and crinum and spider lilies. He was free to dig, transplant, and design in any way he wanted by making do with what he had. Thirty years later, he continues to garden this way in his own gardens in Columbia and Beech Island, South Carolina. His style of gardening is in stark contrast to the gardening industrys steady stream of new products, new advertising, and new rules that create unneeded complexities that intimidate future gardeners and obscure the joy of gardening. Deep-Rooted Wisdom is Farmer's antidote to this corporate-driven model of gardening. In it he shares the traditional skills and techniques he has learned over the years from generations of gardeners, like gardening with pass-along plants, harnessing the natural power of worms and mushrooms, saving heirloom seeds, and making handmade garden structures out of available materials. Along the way the reader is introduced to a cast of unforgettable characters, like Yvrose Valdez, a woman from Haiti who uses legumes in lieu of fertilizer, and Bennett Baxely, who has a 20-acre yard lled almost entirely with scavenged plants. Deep-Rooted Wisdom is garden mentorship at its best and most honest. It is a personality-lled guide that shows home gardeners the way back to a more joyful, simple style of gardening.
