SPRING 2014

Letter from the Editor

Things are looking a little different here at Timber Press. For the past few years we have been improving the overall look of our books with fresh, clear, inviting designs. Now we have updated our logo to communicate how we are growing into the future. We will still publish the work of experts in gardening, horticulture, and natural history but in a way that appeals to a wider audience, and in packages that reect that accessibility. The most recent example of that effort is the launching of the Plant Lovers Guides, a new series about the plants that every gardener should know, grow, and love. Four new titles each spring will highlight the best varieties of a particular genus or group of plants, show how to design with them, and reveal tips and tricks for propagation and cultivation. With their beautiful packages and wealth of information, these books are must-haves for every gardener and plant lover. Every gardener and nature lover will want to own Living Landscape: Designing for Beauty and Biodiversity in the Home Garden. Two of our bestselling authors, Doug Tallamy and Rick Darke, have teamed up to show homeowners how to put the principles of Dougs seminal book Bringing Nature Home into practice. By following their advice, readers can help to slow the rate of species extinction and keep the earth the biodiverse home it needs to be for our survival. An easy way to increase biodiversity is to replace the lawn with a garden. Evelyn Hadden rst told us how in Beautiful No-Mow Yards. Now she is turning her attention to the last frontier of the landscape in Hellstrip Gardening: Create a Paradise Between the Sidewalk and the Curb. She shows how to reclaim this forgotten bit of real estate and make it a beautiful, bountiful, thriving part of the garden. All the excitement isnt just in the garden, either. We are introducing another new series, this one of regional foraging books that provide all the information readers need to nd the most avorful wild foods. With local experts leading the way, readers will be able to turn their backyards and the elds and forests beyond into a cornucopia of produce for the table. Our look has been renewed and refreshed, but the mission remains the same to share the wonder of the natural world with readers everywhere.

Their presence not only looks interesting and attractive juxtaposed with many other plants, but against nonplant parts of a garden like a walkway, a patio, rocks and stones, or other hard solid surfaces. Now lets look at some of the more common or popular uses rst. To oversimplify, sedums have two primary uses in the garden. The rst is as a border plant; the second is as a groundcover. Some sedums may be used both ways.

Border Sedums
The rst major use of sedums is as border plants. Here we are talking about the larger, upright-growing perennial types. These are in their glory in the fall, which is why they are sometimes called autumn sedums. Botanists have now set them apart in their own genus, Hylotelephium. The most familiar and popular one, of course, is Autumn Joy Hylotelephium Herbstfreude. This resilient plant has true four-season appeal, emerging in spring as a blue-green dome with toothed foliage, developing light green broccoli-like buds in mid to late summer, and turning pink to red in fall and nally to cinnamon brown as the ower fades to a dried stem by winter. All hylotelephiums follow this same cycle, though foliage and ower colors vary. You can make a gorgeous fall border vignetteas landscape designers term simple, effective plant combinationswith border sedums and other perennials that are at their best at that time of year. The rich shades of the owerheads and the oftencolorful leaves blend very well with plants of red, yellow, or purple owers or foliage. Alternatively, try a sedumsonly display, mixing a few closely related species or cultivars for a blend of colors. This tack results in a handsome, low-maintenance ribbon of color, or brings a multihued, tapestry-like look to a larger or broader bed. There are many outstanding choices nowadays and more coming out all the time, all of which create beautiful displays. The following are a few my favorite combinations, which you can follow or use as inspiration for your own compositions.

THE LIVING LANDSCAPE

Designing for Beauty and Biodiversity in the Home Garden

RICK DARKE AND DOUG TALLAMY
A home garden is often seen as separate from the natural world surrounding it. In truth, it is just one part of a larger landscape that is made up of many living layers. The replacement of the rich layers of native plants with turf grass greatly diminishes a gardens biological diversity and ecological function. The Living Landscape seeks to reverse this trend by showing gardeners how to create a beautiful landscape that is full of life. Written by Rick Darke and Doug Tallamy, two bestselling garden authors, it is the denitive guide to designing a beautiful, biodiverse home garden. The authors rst explain each layer of the landscape and what role the plants
RICK DARKE is a landscape design consultant, author, lecturer, and photographer based in Landenberg, Pennsylvania who blends art, ecology, and cultural geography in the creation and conservation of livable landscapes. within them plays in the larger environment, from providing berries for birds, food for bugs, or a place for bees to pollinate. The authors then put this information into context and offer gardeners design strategies to implement into a home garden. Helpful charts offer suggested plants, including natives and non-natives, for each region. Doug Tallamys award-winning Bringing Nature Home revealed the pressing need for a biodiverse home landscape. In a gorgeously illustrated, inspirational, and practical way, The Living Landscape supports the important message by showing gardeners how to make it happen.
DOUG TALLAMY is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, where he has taught insect taxonomy, behavioral ecology, and other subjects. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants. Doug won the Silver Medal from the Garden Writers Association for his book, Bringing Nature Home.

Deep-Rooted Wisdom
Skills and Stories from Generations of Gardeners
AUGUSTUS JENKINS FARMER
Augustus Jenkins Farmer (aka Jenks) started gardening in the third grade in a corner of the family farm lled with rocks, scrap metal, and crinum and spider lilies. He was free to dig, transplant, and design in any way he wanted by making do with what he had. Thirty years later, he continues to garden this way in his own gardens in Columbia and Beech Island, South Carolina. His style of gardening is in stark contrast to the gardening industrys steady stream of new products, new advertising, and new rules that create unneeded complexities that intimidate future gardeners and obscure the joy of gardening. Deep-Rooted Wisdom is Farmer's antidote to this corporate-driven model of gardening. In it he shares the traditional skills and techniques he has learned over the years from generations of gardeners, like gardening with pass-along plants, harnessing the natural power of worms and mushrooms, saving heirloom seeds, and making handmade garden structures out of available materials. Along the way the reader is introduced to a cast of unforgettable characters, like Yvrose Valdez, a woman from Haiti who uses legumes in lieu of fertilizer, and Bennett Baxely, who has a 20-acre yard lled almost entirely with scavenged plants. Deep-Rooted Wisdom is garden mentorship at its best and most honest. It is a personality-lled guide that shows home gardeners the way back to a more joyful, simple style of gardening.

LATIN FOR BIRD LOVERS

Over 3,000 Bird Names Explored and Explained
DR.ROGER LEDERER & CAROL BURR
In every scientic discipline, there is an official language formed of words derived from Latin. Ornithology is a perfect example of how these words can be illuminating. Take Anas acuta, better known as the Northern Pintail, whose scientic name means sharp duck and refers to the male birds tail. Or pelagic (meaning of, related to, or occurring in the sea), an important term for ocean-focused bird lovers. Latin for Bird Lovers introduces the reader to over 3,000 Latin words used to describe birds. The words dene the identity and relationships among the approximately 10,000 known species. They identify genus and species names by color, pattern, or size; identify parts of the body; refer to the name of the person who discovered the bird; show where the bird is found; and detail its behavior. In short, they help birders better understand the birds they are viewing. The book also proles twelve great ornithologists and has in-depth features on 20 bird genera. The gorgeous package includes more than 200 color illustrations. Latin for Bird Lovers is for birdwatchers, nature lovers, and anyone interested in the meaning behind the words about birds.

people who found and named some of the most beloved birds More than 200 full-color bird illustrations make this a wonderful gift for any bird lover
