CHD an official Bike Friendly Destination

On May 30, a press conference was held to honor more than 70 official Bike Friendly Destinations (BFD) around the Greater Cincinnati area, including CHD. The BFD program of Queen City Bike started in 2011 to recognize the efforts of local schools, businesses and organizations for supporting those who ride a bike for transportation purposes. Queen City Bike is a non-profit organization that promotes bicycling as a safe and healthy means of transportation and recreation in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. CHDs Burnet/King has a bike rack to the right of the main entrance for use by employees and patients. City Employees: A bike commute of 30 minutes or more can be counted on your Healthy Lifestyles Exercise Log to help earn you money.

Unintentional Drowning
Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger. Drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the United States according to the CDC. Drowning is not the violent, splashing, call for help that most people expect. In fact, the waving, splashing and yelling in a dramatic way is rarely seen in real life.

5 Steps to avoid drowning

1. Understand the physics of drowning. People drown when they raise their arms, causing the head to sink below the surface of the water. 2. Keep your hands in the water. Do not raise your hands and do not flail. 3. Move your hands under the water in any manner to raise your head high enough, allowing you to breathe. 4. Move your legs in the act of walking to keep you afloat. Kicking will also prevent your arms from tiring. 5. Continue this pattern of arm and feet movement until rescue is provided.

Dr. Steven Englender spoke at the CAA Summer Crisis Kickoff where they gave away free air conditioners and fans. Dr. Englender discussed the serious medical consequences if seniors and children with chronic illnesses don't get the help they need to stay cool, general heat impact and community responsibility. SIA intern shares experience

DiAnna Peterson, 3rd Year What can you tell us about the MSD Student Intern Academy? This is my third year with SIA. The program started in 2006 with just ten students who got the chance to work in the public sector. Over the years it has grown to 75 interns and includes city departments such as Greater Cincinnati Water Works (which is where I worked for two summers) and the City of Cincinnati Health Department (which is where I am working this summer). Would you say that this internship has taught you a lot? Yes! Eight weeks may not seem like a long time but I really am learning so much. One thing I have valued is our mission statement, which is to expose and educate greater Cincinnati youth in public and private sector careers which will benefit our community and develop our future work force.
