MicroStation Directory Structure

The directory structure for MicroStation has been revised. This new structure will facilitate making updates and reduce the possibility of overwriting data when reinstalling MicroStation. The following lists the major changes to the directory structure: Renamed the Win32app directory to Bentley Added the Home subdirectory Added the Documentation subdirectory Added the Program subdirectory Added the Workspace subdirectory Moved user data files to the Workspace subdirectory

The Home Directory

The \Bentley\Home folder was created to provide a local storage location for some Bentley product-specific data that is unique to a computer or workstation. The location of this folder is defined by the variable _USTN_HOMEROOT (by default, it is at the same level as ..\Program\, ..\Workspace\, ..\Documentation ). User Preference Files and dfltuser.cfg, the file containing the current workspace name, are created and stored in the \Bentley\Home\prefs... folder by default.

It is highly recommended to not share User Preference Files between users.

Although multiple users can and should utilize the same workspace and user configuration files over a network, \Bentley\Home\ should reside on each local computer or workstation.

The Documentation Directory

The Documentation Directory

This directory contains the new, language-specific, product documentation files which are viewed using a web browser.

During a transition period the directory \Bentley\Program\MicroStation\docs will

continue to be used.

The Program Directory

This directory contains the files necessary for MicroStation to operate in its default configuration. Files installed in this directory include: MicroStation system files SGML-based on-line help subsystem executables EDG executable files Licensing If installed, Engineering Configuration system files (for example, GeoGraphics, Modeler or TriForma executable files)

A general comparison of MicroStation SE and MicroStation/J directory structures follows.

The Workspace Directory

The workspace directory has been added to allow users to create and maintain standards and projects in a network environment. User data files should be stored in the Workspace directory or in a shared network resource. This gives the ability to share project data and develop, maintain and enforce the use of drawing standards and the appearance of MicroStation on the desktop. Projects directory all project data. This is where project-specific data is typically stored. Standards directory data for all projects. This is where the CAD Manager or System Administrator stores and maintains corporate standards. Project data that can be used on multiple projects can be moved to this directory.

Sample Project Directory Structure

System directory owned and updated by Bentley. Any user data placed in this directory will be overwritten by subsequent software installations or updates.

Sample Project Directory Structure

Projects should be created in the \Workspace\projects directory. As installed MicroStation provides a set of sample projects in the \Workspace\projects\examples directory. Users can create projects using their standard naming conventions. A sample directory structure follows (these files can be installed anywhere on the network by setting the system environment variable _ustn_workspaceroot before starting MicroStation/J):
