Alkyd resins are formed by reacting oil or fatty acid with polios and polyamides or anhydride. These polymers are supplied in solvents and dry reacting with oxygen or with amino resins producing firm films. The type of oil (or fatty acid) and its quantity in polymer determine the speed of drying and their solubleness . Using these characteristics three type of resins have been developed: long oil ( with more than 60% oil content) medium oil (form 40% to 60%) alkyd resins used in building and general-purpose coatings for wood and metal and short-oil (below 40%) alkyd resins used for fast drying and thermosetting coatings. Alkyd resin can be also modified with styrene or (meta) acrylate that improve their drying and mechanical properties and durability. Epoxy ester resins are based on epoxy resins esterified with fatty acids. In the reaction with oxygen they dry in the similar way as alkyd resins. Epoxyester resins provide coatings with outstanding chemical and mechanical resistance.
