Short Film Analysis: The Black Hole

Firstly we see the company name and logo and the web address accompanying it. This allows the audience to access their personal website. In addition to this we can then see a simple white title is covered on the opening establishing shot, which says The Black Hole which is the name of the clip.

The film is set in an office environment surrounded by the dull environment; we wonder what interesting could happen in such a droll place. The office looks messy, which connotes that, the character may be unorganised. We place ourselves in the shoes of the protagonist and feel almost claustrophobic in such a cluttered area. We can tell that the character isnt pleased with his job, we can tell through his facial expressions and his actions towards the photocopier.

Camera The film first begins with an establishing shot of the location, which allows the audience to recognize where the film is set. The camera then pans slowly towards the subject and a medium shot is then used to convey to the audience how the characters emotion towards the environment is. Throughout the scene mainly medium close-ups have been used to show the protagonist emotions towards the black hole. A low angle is then used when the characters notices that the white piece of paper is a black hole, this particular shot makes the protagonist look more powerful as he has made a discovery. Editing At the start of the clip the editing is very slow pace to show the audience that the character does not enjoy his job and creates a boring atmosphere. However when he makes his discovery the pace of the begins to speed up, this show time is now passing nicely in contrast to before where it was dragging as he was having no fun what so ever.

Sound Computers and paper copying machine beeping is to make the audience aware the character is in a working office environment, this creates an atmosphere. Throughout the whole of the film the protagonist does not speak and we can only hear his actions for example him walking about, it is sound coming from a source outside the story space.

Mise- en-scene The lighting is mostly dark within the scene, which creates the feeling of a horrible atmosphere at work and especially the protagonist environment. This character is also dressed in smart formal clothing, which should imply a hard workingman who is determined however he seems to be not interested one bit in his work. As the film develops the lighting gets draker connoting that the greed is
taking over.
