BAY Area
Conveniently located at the intersection of one of Japans major rivers and the Seto Inland Sea, throughout the centuries Osaka, which is known as the water city, was a principle center of trade and cultural exchange with not only other areas in Japan, but also parts of mainland China and the Korean peninsula. During the Middle Ages, the city was a base for religious pilgrimages to the many temples and shrines in the region and later came to be known as the nations kitchen on account of the central role that it plays in distribution. Today, Osaka is developing as a hub for the production of next-generation robots, combining a rich cultural past with a sophisticated high-tech future that provides countless attractions for visitors and residents alike.

A CITY STEEPED IN HISTORY

THE WATER METROPOLIS

A City that has Always Thrived Around Water
Thanks to its convenient location, Osaka has developed as the gateway to Japan, serving as a center for international trade and cultural interaction. It had its own port by the 5th century and by the 17th century, the city had become a center of distribution for the rest of Japan, with many specialty products from the provinces finding their way to Osaka. The canals and bridges that were built by the people to facilitate the movement of goods helped to shape the city and their influence can still be seen to this day. Riverside attractions include the tree-lined banks of the gently flowing rivers in the Okawa~ Nakanoshima area, the lively Dotombori area and the Bay area with its new amusements and theme parks.

Immersed in the Romance of History

3 2 4 5

From around the 5th century through to the 8th century, Osaka was declared the nations capital several times and played a major role in trade and cultural exchange. Later, the city served as a base for the pilgrimage routes to areas such as Kumano. Osaka Castle was constructed during the 16th century by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who managed to unify the various warring factions within Japan, and during the 17th century, the city became a center for trade and distribution activities and was referred to as the nations kitchen. Underpinning this prosperity were the citys resourceful and enterprising merchants, who introduced the worlds first futures trading system. The city is full of historic places, especially on the Uemachi plateau that runs north to south through the city. Osaka Castle and the remains of Naniwanomiya Palace are located in the north, Shitennoji, which is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan, is located in the central area, and Sumiyoshi-taisha Grand Shrine, which is said to have been built in the 3rd century, is located further to the south.

Delicious & Distinctive Osaka-Style Food

CITY OF CULINARY DELIGHTS

The very best of produce and seafood can be found in Osaka. Good quality ingredients led to consumers developing discerning tastes, which in turn produced skilled chefs who were able to satisfy their needs. One of the characteristics of this sophisticated Osaka taste is the use of rich kelp and dried skipjack broth as a base in combination with a light soy sauce to bring out the inherent flavors of the ingredients. An ideal way to experience this flavor is to try a bowl of Osaka style udon noodles, such as kitsune udon, which consists of udon noodles in a broth with fried bean curd. The ultimate in terms of this unique Osaka style is kaiseki ryouri, a traditional Japanese style multi-course meal. Shokadobento (a traditional Japanese style multi-course boxed lunch) was created by Osaka chefs as a way for people to enjoy kaiseki ryori outdoors. Osaka style sushi is different from traditional Tokyo style sushi in that it is pressed or steamed. There are many kinds of nabe ryouri (traditional hot pot dishes), of which tecchiri ( fugu or blowfish hot pot) is a typical example. In addition to traditional dishes, more modern Osaka style food includes okonomiyaki (a savory pancake) and takoyaki (wheat flour dumplings with octopus). One can also find kushikatsu (skewered fried food), yakiniku (barbecued meat) and tempura. Visitors longing for food from their own country can probably find what they want, choosing from the rich variety of French, Italian, Chinese and other ethnic foods available.

THE PERFORMING ARTS

Osaka boasts a wide range of traditional performing arts, including noh, kyogen, bunraku and kamigata kabuki. Bunraku, which was registered by UNESCO as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003, is a form of traditional puppet theater that originated in Osaka more than 300 years ago. Accompanied by shamisen music and narrative song, puppeteers manipulate the puppets to create subtle movements and expressions. One of the characteristics of kamigata kabuki is the way in which it realistically portrays a wide range of social obligations, human emotions and romance. In 2005 this too was registered as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Noh and kyogen are performed throughout the year at the Noh Theater, while in summer Takigi Noh (noh performed in the light of burning torches) is performance outdoors. A wide range of concerts and musicals are always being held in the many halls and venues throughout the city at which people can enjoy artists from throughout Japan and around the world.

Folding Screen of the Osaka Summer Campaign Important Cultural Property, Japanese Government

Timeless, Majestic, Beautiful

Construction of Osaka Castle commenced in 1583 by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who aimed to unify Japan as a nation. Two years later, the main tower was completed and used as a command post. This was burned down after the Toyotomi clan was killed in 1615 and although it was rebuilt during the Tokugawa Period, it was struck by lightning in 1665 and was once again reduced to ashes. It remained in ruins for 266 years until 1931 when it was rebuilt to once again grace the Osaka skyline, this time with the help of public donations (approx. 75 billion was given). Another restoration project was started in 1995 to restore the main tower to its former splendor, after which this much-loved dynamic symbol of Osaka was registered by the government as a tangible cultural asset.

Items on Display at Osaka Castle

More than 8,000 important cultural assets are stored in the main tower of Osaka Castle, the most impressive of which is the folding screen painting depicting the summer battle of Osaka. In this masterpiece that is said to have been commissioned after the battle by the Fukuoka feudal lord Nagamasa Kuroda, the commander of the eastern forces, the various facets of the battlefield are clearly depicted, such as the castle and town prior to their destruction and the terrible confusion in the surround areas. Other items include many good examples of the writings, armor and weapons, pictures and woodblock prints.
