Bobble Wrap Laptop Sleeve

Designed by Emily Wendel Inspired by and adapted from the Bobbling Along Aran Tote by Celeste Young http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bobbling !along !aran!tote

This pattern creates a very thick, cushiony fabric to cover your laptop; the bobbles, popcorns, and double!thick cables act just like bubble wrap to absorb minor bumps and shocks. I chose an acrylic yarn because its durable and washable; a cotton or wool!acrylic blend yarn also would work well. While I chose not to, you could add a synthetic oilcloth liner to make the sleeve water! resistant.

Materials: Approx. 670 yards "312 grams# worsted weight yarn "Model shown in Loops & Threads Impeccable Yarn, #01106 Cadet# $ Size H/8 hook, or size for gauge $ 3 buttons, 1!1 1/2 in diameter $ "Model shown with 1 1/2 buttons, handmade from oak branches by Jay Beesmer, $ http://www.etsy.com/shop/WoodenTreasures# Finished Size: 14.5 long x 10 wide x 1 deep $ $ Model sized to t 13 MacBook Pro. $ $ Easily can be modied to t any laptop by adjusting the gauge, hook size, or $ $ yarn weight, or by adding side and bottom panels. Gauge: I measured the initial ch 42 with an H hook against the width of my laptop "approx. $ 10#; adjust the length of your ch 42 by increasing or decreasing hook size, or for a $ much larger or smaller laptop or device, adjust the length of your ch 42 by using a $ di%erent weight of yarn. At this point, if you have learned the diamond repeat pattern, skip to the * for simplied instructions. Rows 11!44: Rep rows 3!10 "ve and a half diamond repeats completed# Row 45: Ch 1, turn. Rows 46!49: Rep rows 7!10 Rows 50!58: Rep rows 3!10 "eight diamond repeats completed# Row 59: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each stitch across. Fasten o%. * Once you have learned the pattern repeats, its much easier to understand the instructions this way: Complete ve and a half diamond repeats. On what would be the popcorn row of the sixth diamond repeat, "sc in next 5 sc# where you would have done "sc in next 2 sc, popcorn, sc in next 2 sc#. This creates the three blank spaces where you will place the buttons. Continue the pattern repeats until you have eight diamond repeats, including the repeat with the button blanks. Work a row of sc across the top, and fasten o%.

To make a longer or shorter sleeve, you may place the blank button diamonds in any row, and continue making repeats until you reach the desired length; for instance, you could put them at the fth repeat from the bottom, or the seventh. Finishing the Front: Weave in ends and attach buttons. Tip: If your buttons have exposed holes, as in the model, I recommend attaching them with a strong thread rst, and then looping a length of yarn over the thread, to hide it; simply tie the ends of the yarn at the back and weave in ends. Back of Sleeve: Row 1: Ch 42, turn. Working into ridge side of chain, sc in second ridge from hook and in each ridge across "41 sc#. Again, if you have learned the diamond repeat pattern, please skip to the *. Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in rst sc, FPDC around next sc, "**sc in next three sc, double FPDC around next sc, sc in next sc, double FPDC around next sc, sc in next 3 sc, FPDC around next sc,** sc in next three sc, FPDC around next sc# twice, rep ** to ** once, sc in last sc. Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc in rst 12 sc, bobble in next sc, sc in next sc, bobble in next sc, sc in next 11 sc, bobble in next sc, sc in next sc, bobble in next sc, sc in last 12 sc. Row 4: Ch 1, turn. Row 7: Rep row 3. Row 8: Rep row 4. Row 9: Rep row 5. Row 10: Ch 1, turn. Sc in rst sc, FPDC around next FPDC, "**sc in next three sc, double FPDC around next double FPDC, sc in next sc, double FPDC around next double FPDC, sc in next 3 sc, FPDC around next FPDC,** sc in next three sc, FPDC around next FPDC# twice, rep ** to ** once, sc in last sc.

Rows 11!93: Rep rows 3!10 "eleven and a half diamond repeats completed#. Row 94: Ch 1, turn. Sc in rst sc, **FPDC around FPDC, sc in next sc, double FPDC around double FPDC, ch 5, double FPDC around double FPDC, sc in next sc, FPDC around FPDC,** sc in next 3 sc, FPDC around FPDC, sc in next sc, double FPDC around double FPDC, ch 5, double FPDC around double FPDC, sc in next sc, FPDC around FPDC, sc in next 3 sc, rep ** to ** once, sc in last sc. At this point, check the button holes against the buttons to be sure that they are not too big. If they are too big, do "sc in next sc, ch 3, sc in next sc# where you would have done "ch 5#. Row 95: Ch 1, turn. Sc in rst 12 sc, bobble in next sc, sc in next sc, bobble in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 3 sc in ch 3 space, sc in next 4 sc, bobble in next sc, sc in next sc, bobble in next sc, sc in last 12 sc. Rows 96!98: Rep rows 8!10. Row 99: Sc in each sc across, fasten o%, and weave in ends "thirteen diamond repeats completed#. * Simplied Instructions: Complete eleven and a half diamond repeats, or however many you need to match the length of the front panel, plus one repeat to go over the top of the sleeve "or multiple repeats if you are making a signicantly deeper sleeve#, two more repeats for the top of the ap, and at this point we are on the repeat row that will be on top of the buttons. On what would be the popcorn row of the twelfth diamond repeat, "ch 5# where you would do "sc in next 2 sc, popcorn, sc in next 2 sc#. This creates the button holes. When you have completed one button hole, check it for size against your buttons; if the button hole is too big, make the button holes as "sc in next sc, ch 3, sc in next sc#. Continue the pattern repeats, until you have made thirteen diamond repeats. Work a row of sc across the top, and fasten o%. Weave in ends. Optional: Adding Side and Bottom Panels to Accommodate a Thicker Laptop Without the additional panels, the pattern accommodates a laptop of approximately 1 thickness. To nd the needed panel width, measure your laptops thickness and subtract 1. Starting on the left!side edge of the front panel, sc along the edge, making 3 sc in each corner, until you have gone around both sides and the bottom of the front panel. Ch 1, turn, and continue to sc around all three edges until the panels reach the necessary width. Fasten o% and weave in ends.

Assembly: Work carefully along the bottom to be sure that the pattern repeats are mirrored along the bottom seam. Hold the right sides of the front and back panels together, so that the assembled sleeve will be inside out, and check to be sure that the buttons and button holes are aligned. Sc in each stitch across the bottom of the sleeve; work 3 sc in the corner, and sc evenly down the left edge of the sleeve. When you reach the top edge of the front panel, continue to sc along the edge of the ap only, working 3 sc in each corner. Sc until you reach the top edge at the other side of the front panel. At this point, sc through both edges to join the other side of the sleeve, being careful to keep the sleeve edges at and aligned. When you reach your starting point, fasten o% and weave in ends. Turn the sleeve right side out "you may have to push the bottom edge of the sleeve up, as the fabric is very thick and sti%.#
