Hartford woman's cancer battle gives her new lease on life

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER It took staring down death for Kathy Stigler to truly appreciate the beauty and fragility of life. Diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in October 2012, the 55year-old Hartford resident has turned a daunting and devastating struggle into a positive. "I learned the lesson that life is too short," she said in a recent phone interview with the Express News. "Every day I wake up and thank the Lord for another day. I have been so blessed and right now I am just trying to live my life to the fullest." An unwelcome visitor returns At the time of her diagnosis, the mother of three and grandmother of four was already well-acquainted with the insidious monster known as cancer. As the main caretaker for her husband, Ken, for five years at that point, Stigler had already faced more than her fair share of the medical drama that goes along with a life-or-death health scare. For a half a decade, the doting wife tended to her husband's needs as he battled Stage IV skin cancer, and for her that was more difficult than her own diagnosis. "That was the hardest time in our marriage, because I hated seeing him like that," she said of her husband of 34 years. "We have had a really great life together and after all these years, we can still say we love each other." In July 2012, the tables turned and after developing a persistent cough that turned up as she helped her sister move, the caretaker became the patient. My sister and I were doing deep-cleaning and de-cluttering one weekend and when I went to work that Monday, I developed this cough out of nowhere and I just couldnt get rid of it, she recalled. Believing it was allergies to animal fur and dust, Stigler was treated with a steroid. This initially worked wonders, but only briefly. When the steroid failed, Stiglers doctor decided a chest X-ray was in order and thats when her life was turned upside down. The X-ray showed fluid around her heart and lungs as well as two masses. "I asked my doctor, 'Could this be cancer?' and she said, 'Yes, it very well may be,'" Stigler shared. "I told her, 'Well, then lets deal with it.'"

The masses were, in fact, lung cancer, despite the fact that Stigler had never smoked. In the drama that followed, a bronchial tube was placed, the smaller of the two tumors was removed and Stiglers lung was punctured during a biopsy, requiring a 10-day stay in the Intensive Care Unit. Although she thought that had readied her for the worst, Stigler was still leveled by the official diag-

(NAPSI)-Colder weather does not have to cast a chill on your energy budget. By winterizing your home, you can enjoy increased warmth and comfort and lower your heating costs, which can significantly increase energy savings. Here are some steps you can take: Caulk, patch or weather-strip any areas around windows and doors that might allow cold air in or warm air out. Your fireplace, too, is a source of heat loss, so close the damper when the fireplace is not in use. Put storm windows in place. New, insulated glass windows can provide important energy savings. However, if you cannot afford new windows, consider covering older windows with plastic

sheeting. Check insulation in your attic, ceilings, exterior and basement walls, floors and crawl spaces to see if it meets the levels (measured in R-values) recommended for your area. It's also wise to insulate water heaters and pipes to minimize heat loss. Replace or clean filters in your heating unit to improve airflow and efficiency. Schedule an inspection of your system by a heating professional. Heat pumps and oil-fired furnaces need annual tune-ups; gas-fired equipment can be serviced every other year. Professional technicians are usually trained to detect leaks, soot, rust, rot, corroded electrical contacts and frayed wires. Next, take advantage of a programmable thermostat and set the temperature lower when you're away or sleeping. Finally, if you need to replace your home heating unit, consider a new furnace or heat pump that meets standards for high efficiency, measured as annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) for furnaces and heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) for heat pumps. The higher the AFUE or HSPF, the more efficient the unit and the more likely you are to save energy and money.

...New type of medicine the turning point in recovery

From page 1
nosis of Stage IV lung cancer. "When you hear the words 'You have cancer,' I don't care how prepared you are," she said. "When he said 'Stage Four,' I asked how many stages there are and he told me there are four stages like it's common knowledge. But what I wanted to know was how did I get to Stage Four when I had never felt stages One, Two or Three? My doctor told me that's why they call cancer 'The Silent Killer.'" Fighting the battle After she was informed she had cancer, Stigler wanted all the cards laid out. "I asked, 'What does this mean to me?'" she said. "I was told the cancer was incurable, but treatable." Encouraged by her doctor that she was young and strong enough to face her enemy with good odds, Stigler forged ahead with the battle of a lifetime. First off, she decided to seek further treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, Ill., where her husband Ken had been treated for his skin cancer and which the couple held in the highest esteem. A 16-year resident of Lindenhurst, Ill., at the time (Ken and Kathy moved to Hartford in July 2013 for work and family reasons), Stigler said she felt "blessed to have this wonderful facility just a half hour from my house," and when she and Ken chose their new location, a requirement was that it had to be within 90 minutes of the CTCA. "I love my doctors and what they do and I didn't want to change that," said Stigler. When she first came to the CTCA, things did not look good. "Kathy initially presented quite symptomatic from her lung cancer," said Dr. Bruce Gershenhorn, Kathys medical oncologist at CTCA. "Her respiratory status was so compromised that she could not even complete a full sentence without extreme difficulty." Her medical team started Stigler on chemotherapy infusions that "sucked the life right out of me," she said. Doctors credited their patients "cheery disposition and strong faith" as the forces that kept her going. "My doctor told me, 'We're going to do this,'" Stigler said. "But I could barely talk or walk. I was so drained." Turning point Then came the discovery that changed everything. Doctors discovered Stigler had an anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) mutation, meaning she was a candidate for a new type of targeted medicine that proved effective in certain lung cancer patients. The rare mutation, which stimulates cancer cell growth and metastasis, can be shut down by a new drug called Crizotinib, according to cutting-edge research. "My doctor had an ear-to-ear grin," Stigler said. "He said he had the best news." On the market for just two years, Crizotinibtaken orally twice a day for the rest of Stiglers lifewould target just the tumor and, more importantly, save Stigler from the hellish experience of chemotherapy. "Up to that point we had been doing chemo infusions and that was horrible," she said. For a week every month I was down for the count, I was throwing up, and I was told I would have to do that for the rest of my life. God put the mutation in me for a reason. It's very rare. Going on the medicine was a "nobrainer," she said. "On the chemo we were looking at 30 to 40 percent odds of survival and now we're at 60 to 70 percent." So in December 2012, Stigler began taking the drug, which, thankfully, at a cost of $10,000 per month, was covered by insurance. Just three months later she had remarkable results. Her bronchial tube was removed and the tumor had shrunk. "Everyone saw a difference in me," she said. The next scan showed no shrinkage in the tumor, but Stigler was assured that as long as the tumor hadn't grown, she was looking at positive news. "Kathy has achieved remarkable benefits, at the cost of minimal toxicity," said Gershenhorn. As a medical oncologist, it is so professionally satisfying and humbling to be a part of the cancer journey with people like Kathy. A bright future Stigler continues to take the Crizotinib and maintain good health, turning to God and her family for strength and supportand approaching life one day at a time. "So far my scans have come back with no issues and that's the key to moving forward," she said. With her career as a program manager for the Girls Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana a proud accomplishment she looks back upon fondly, Stigler has had to deal with loss in certain areas, but looks forward to the next stage of her life. "That was one of the hardest parts--not being able to problem-solved and multitask like I had done for so long at my job, but in the grand scheme of life, I have what matters," she said. "I am home now, I have my wonderful husband who is retired and with me, we have family and friends. My husband and I are a good team and we're just enjoying each other's company." One of the couple's three sons, Justin, lives with his wife and two sons in Fond du Lac, which was a deciding factor in the Stiglers moving to the Hartford area. Their oldest son, Bill, lives in Germany with his wife and two sons, and their youngest son, Kyle, is a newlywed living in St. Louis. The whole family got the chance to be together at Kyle's recent wedding, Stigler said, and she loved every minute. "I love my family and I love spending time with my grandkids," she said. "Every day I wake up and thank the Lord for another day. You just have to stay positive because that affects your health." The couple continues to "keep an eye on" Ken's skin cancer, but now "he is taking care of me," Stigler said. Besides immersing herself in the company of loved ones, Stigler spends time reading, scrapbooking and crocheting, and just enjoying the wonder of life as taught by the lessons of these past years. "People get so caught up in careers, making money, getting the newest phone and having the best car that it's easy to forget what's truly important," she said. "At any given moment, you could be handed life-changing news and that's when you realize that none of that stuff matters."
