Yang CST 301L-01 15 October 2013 Careers within Communication Design There are many corporations that offer opportunities to Communication Design majors. Communication Design consists of web, visual, and interactive designing. According to Cooks article, companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, and HP are the largest companies that are known for recruiting diverse populations. Google is also a big corporation that is known for expanding their infrastructure. The role of web, visual, and interactive designers are to catch peoples attention with the use of media. Google has a team of User Experience (UX) Designers, Interaction Designers, Visual Designers, Motion Designers, Production Designers and Producers work in a fun, collaborative and fast-paced environment. They constantly refine Googles visual design language, tackle complex user interactions and highlight each products brand and unique personality (Google). Googles design principle is to "focus on the user and all else will follow." In order to meet Googles requirements and be named one of their visual designers, the designer should be able to communicate product purpose, story, and functionality through typography, color and space (Google). The Google headquarters is located in Mountain View, California. There are around seventy offices in at least forty countries around the globe. Google employs an average of at least two thousand individuals annually. The world-wide services that Google offers consist of web, mobile, media, geo, specialized search, home and office, social, and innovation. Google was established in September 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Google). Page and Brin met at Stanford University in 1995 and by 1996, they had built a

Yang 2 search engine that used links to determine the importance of individual webpages (Google) Page and Brin started it off as BackRub, and then had established it as Google. They came to the decision of naming their company Google because the word played on googol, which is the mathematical term for a 1 followed by a hundred zeros (Google). Google Inc. was born in 1998, when Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim wrote a check for $100,000 to that entity (Google). Google was incorporated on September 4, in the year 1998 and the initial public offering was in August 19, 2004 (Google). Larry Page is the chief executive officer and co-founder. He is responsible for Googles day-to-day-operations, as well as leading the companys product development and technology strategy (Google). Page was attending Stanford University and was the first CEO until 2001 (Google). He received his bachelors degree in engineering from University of Michigan and a masters degree in computer science from Stanford University (Google). He is a member of the National Advisory Committee of the University of Michigan College of Engineering, and together with co-founder Sergey Brin, was honored with the Marconi Prize in 2004. He was also a trustee on the board of the X Prize, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2004 (Google). Sergey Brin is also a co-founder of Google Inc. He had served as president of technology, where he shared responsibility for the companys day-to-day operations with Larry Page and Eric Schmidt (Google). He received a bachelors degree with honors in mathematics and computer science from the University of Maryland at College Park (Google). He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship (Google).

Yang 3 Eric Schmidt is the executive chairman. He joined Google in 2001 and helped grow the company from a Silicon Valley startup to a global leader in technology (Google). His responsibilities for the external matters of Google are: building partnerships and broader relationships, government outreach and technology thought leadership, as well as advising the CEO and senior leadership on business and policy issue . Before he joined Google, he was the chairman and CEO of Novel and chief technology officer at Sun Microsystems Inc. (Google). He received his bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley (Google). Google offers many services to many people. Mobile users frequently use applications for their phones, such as Google Play. According to Neil Mawston at Strategy Analytics, Samsung captured almost 95 percent of all Android profits in the first quarter of 2013. It pulled in $5.1 billion, leaving only $200 million for LG (066570:KS), Motorola (which, lets not forget, is owned by Google, HTC, Sony, Huawei, ZTE and several others to fight over (Grobart). Googles new services are: the google keyboard, which allows users to text with Gesture and Voice Typing; Hangouts, which is another way to live chat; and Keep (Google) which are notes. There are other useful apps within Androids by Google, such as Google Search, Chrome for Android, Google Maps for Android, Google+, YouTube, Google Drive, Gmail and etc. The services provided are used on a daily basis with people who own Android devices. Gmail is the most commonly used service provided Google. The users of Gmail are provided with an easy-to-navigate system. There are also tutorials available, if needed. Gmails inbox helps you stay organized by sorting your mail by type (Google).

Yang 4 In 2009, California State University, Monterey Bay had started using Google Apps throughout the campus, such as Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Gmail itself. CSUMB use of Googles services, allows students and faculty to have access without having to have a separate Gmail account. In general, having Gmail allows people to access other services, like Google Play. Google Play runs on the web and Android devices. Google Play allows users to download over millions of apps. Google Plays also has a cloud system so any music, book, magazine, or TV show can be accessible from being on the web, too, anytime and anywhere. Google Play also has the option of making contents available when offline. Google Play updates apps automatically, so users do not have to manually do it. Google has also started their browser, known as Chrome. Chrome can be customized to a users liking by using the Chrome Web Store. Chrome is also available for mobile devices. Google has come up with products such as Chromebooks and Chromecasts. Chromebooks are built-in with Google. They have an easy access to Google services and they run on the fast operating system, Chrome OS. Chromecast allows access to enjoy videos online and music. Chromecast is also remote free. Both Chromebooks and Chromecasts are the most recent products of Google. In the year 2012, Google alone had a head count of 37,544 employees, with a 16% increase and Motorola had 16,317 employees alone (Google). At an average calculation, there are at least thirty-eight people hired each week. Google is still growing and they have a few projects. Google has developed a Crisis Response project (Google), which would allow people to contact their families, create resource pages with information, and hosting a crisis map. In todays world, many people would use the

Yang 5 internet as a resource to find out about what is happening and to stay informed. Google Crisis Response works along with the responders on the ground in order to have a crisis map with information of relief camps and medical centers available to the public. As a Communication Design major, I am interested in visual and web design. I would hope to go more in depth within the web design and web development area. In order to obtain a job in the field, I know that I would have to know how to use programs, such as CS6, Microsoft Visual Studios etc. I would also want to know how to make programs with coding, which would consist of knowing how to use MVS. I am currently taking CST 201 Media Tools, CST 300+ L Major Proseminar and lab, CST 226 Photography, and CST 273 Cyber democracy. I still need to take CST 227 Intro Digital Graphic Design, CST 221 Scripting for Multimedia, CST 236 Computing for Digital Artists, CST 373 Ethics in Communication and Tech, CST 351 Web Design, CST 451 Web Production, CST 400/401, CST 496 and a CST service learning. All these classes will be taken within the next three semesters, since I would have taken CST 201 already. In order for me to prepare myself for employment, I am currently finding internships and Google does offer some internships. I would also look into the Android Development Group on campus. I have knowledge of both Android and Apple products, so to expand my knowledge on either products and be able to know the development would allow me to gain a higher priority in the industry. Every career has competition and demands. Communication designers help display and capture consumers eyes so services and products can be used. Page and Brin started Google off a search engine, but now Google provides so many applications for everyone to use on a daily basis. Visual designers of Google focuses on what their users

Yang 6 will want to see. In order to get to Google, my next steps are to try to get an internship with them before I graduate in spring of 2015.
