t is with distinct pleasure, as the
new Principal of the University of
the West Indies, Mona Campus,
that I extend a warm welcome to
all new and returning students. The
Mona Campus has had a long history
of producing outstanding academic
research and young professionals
who have become trailblazers in their
fields and I have full confidence that
our new and returning students will
continue to follow in this tradition.
As your new Principal, and as a
teacher who has committed decades
to encouraging students to achieve
academic excellence, I am proud to
be the head of a tertiary institution that
supports individual thought, critical
thinking, innovation and cultural
diversity. I implore you to make use
of this amazing opportunity as we all
know a tertiary education is a privilege
that should never be squandered.
As someone who was once in your
shoes, being a young student of
medicine living on hall, I would like
to take this opportunity to encourage
you all to be inspired to question
everything, indulge in diversity,
explore new and creative ideas,
share your experiences and strive
to be the best that you can be. I
understand that academic life is full
of its many challenges, especially if
this is your first time away from the
comforts of your home and family, but
rest assured that the entire University
administration and academic staff are
here to support you as you embark
on yet another year of academia. The
University is here to provide a learning
environment, however it is integral
that you also be motivated to take on
this challenge. Strive to become the
best in your class and I guarantee
you that it will reap amazing rewards
in the long term; and further keep in

place in public speaking at the World
Universities Debating Championships
in Botswana. And who can ever forget
Hansle Parchment’s bronze medal in
the sprint hurdles at the 2012 London,

my wish for you, as the latest
cohort to enter the prestigious
University of the West Indies
and the walls of the dynamic and
cultural mecca named Rex Nettleford
Hall. I am delighted and excited to
welcome you to this Hall as you
endeavor to create your own trail. A
hall of residence is more than a place
to live; it is also a thriving and lively
centre of learning. Do everything to
ensure you have a rich and culturally
fulfilling experience while not
compromising your academic goals.
The many programmes and activities
from the hall and university are geared
towards your holistic development.
Consider that you are among a very
privileged few of the population that
will access higher education. Do not
take this for granted, instead ensure
that you hone and develop skills and
competencies that will engender
a greater Caribbean community in

remember my own experience of
what was then the University College
(UCWI), and the excitement that ran
through the institution in those early
days. Those of us who were fortunate
enough to have been accepted to the

The Hall experience is a very
rewarding one. There is always
someone who will give advice, be
there to listen when the challenges
seem particularly difficult and offer
guidance in situations which, for many
of you, will be very new. For many,
University has been the foundation
on which one’s whole life has been
built, and they remain grateful for
how it allowed them to develop, the
experiences that it provided, and
the values that they have embraced.
As you start what I am sure will be
a wonderful time of your life, I urge
you to move forward with an open
mind, a readiness to learn, and a
passion that will help you fulfil all

ex Nettleford Hall was first envisioned when the then Director of
Student Services and Development, Dr. Thelora Reynolds, took office
in 1996. She identified, as one of the University’s problems, the need
for an affordable housing solution that would satisfy a large number of
students. After consulting with Student Services and Development Managers,
Mr. Carlton Lowrie and Mr. Peter O’Sullivan, the group worked in coordination
with the Executive Director of the National Housing Trust, Mr. Milverton
Reynolds, and formulated a plan to add new blocks to Chancellor and Taylor
Halls. However, this idea was soon further revolutionised resulting in the birth
of perfection, the Rex Nettleford Hall.
Located only a short walk from the Mona
Bowl, the hall is nestled comfortably in
the foothills of the famed Blue Mountain
Peak. This location is quiet and serene,
far away from the ‘humdrum’ of Campus
life and undoubtedly fosters good study
habits which are vital for survival at
this University. With nine clusters and
large open spaces, the Hall is ideal for
community life. Rexans proudly boast
of a computer lab, laundromat, state of
the art multipurpose room, and the Red

me take this opportunity to assure
you that the University of the West
Indies is an intellectual mecca that is
highly regarded as the fore-runner
in the cultivation and stimulation of
knowledge among the Caribbean
people, and is indeed Your Place to
Shine. It is no secret that you are
already among the region’s brightest
and most promising minds, but even
then, “to whom much is given, much
is expected”. As such, the task is on
you to ensure that you undertake
your academic journey with focus and
purpose.

The ‘Guild’ as it is affectionately
referred to, is an organization within
the University structure, of which you
are a member and whose primary
purpose is to advocate on behalf of
the student body. The Guild Council
on the other hand is a subset of the
student population who are charged
with governing all student affairs.
The Council takes great pride in
undertaking initiatives that cater to
the social, economic and academic
affair of each member of the Guild of
Students.
Over the course of the next academic
year, it is our intention to stimulate
greater student involvement and
activism on the Mona Campus,
through a wide range of activities and
initiatives that will seek to contribute
active solutions to issues that not only
affect us as student, but also those
that are faced by people on a national
and regional level.
We look forward to your maximum
involvement and support over the
next academic year as ‘Together we
can make it happen’.

the wide range of extra-curricular
activities, try new things, learn
new about culture and build lasting

to provide you with state of the art
facilities including our Computer
Lab, Laundry, Off Campus lounge
and living amenities. These facilities
have been provided by the university
for you to have a comfortable living
environment and a home away from
home. I urge you to care for the
infrastructure as they are yours and
preserve them for future generations
of Rexans to come. The Facilities
and Maintenance Office is there for
you to help in the event of those
maintenance issues that will arise
from time to time.

The Secretarial Committee comprises
the Hall Secretary and Administrative
Assistant, and all cluster and committee
secretaries. Its function includes to ensure
that all minutes, motions and resolutions
are immaculately recorded, documented
and disseminated at respective levels.

Money matters, and at Rex Nettleford Hall, this is no different.
The Treasury Committee is the monetary hub that funds
most of the activities hosted by the hall. The committee itself,
consists of all nine cluster treasurers who monitor, create and
circulate financial information on behalf of the Hall Committee.
This committee stands for accountability and transparency
and spearheads the formulation of novel fund-raising ideas

Nettleford Hall has been
an entirely new experience.
The Rex Nettleford Hall is
ready to love you for who you are
and accept whatever talents you
may possess. The Hall atmosphere
enforces that University life is not all
about the academics, but also about
developing individuals on a holistic
level. I implore you to participate in
the various activities as much as
your major allows you to. The zeal for
team work and unity has taught me
how to think differently about certain
situations. If given the choice to pick
the Hall I want to reside on, I would
choose Rex, a hundred more times.

am delighted to welcome you to the
University of the West Indies and the
Rex Nettleford Hall of Residence.
As alumni I can proudly say that
this Hall has been home to some of
the brightest and most talented young
minds I believe the Caribbean has to
offer. During my course of stay at the
Rex Nettleford Hall, I had the prized
opportunity to meet, share, mingle
and form lifetime bonds with a very
diverse set of individuals. This setting
provided the perfect environment for
us to learn from each other, realize
how similar we are and to appreciate
the variances which make each of us
unique.
Like most pilgrims you will more
than likely be experiencing mixed

and money. I promise you, that if you
pay keen attention to the information
being dispensed, you will not have
many problems in overcoming these
challenges.
As a Rexan you are a part of the
family of “eight hundred strong”.
Take advantage of this and build a
strong support network of people
who share your interests and will
give you sound guidance and help.
As with so many things in life, what
you get out of campus life will largely
depend on what you put in. Seize
every opportunity to develop not
only your mind but also your social
and emotional being. As a resident
you will have access to a buffet of
social and developmental activities
that take place on the campus and in
hall, partaking in these activities will
not only help to relax and re-energize
your mind and body but will also help
you to develop the soft skills that will
complement the knowledge you learn
in the lecture room.
Now is the time for self-discovery and
self-actualization, question yourself,
challenge yourself but in all this have
fun and make a positive contribution

helping you to transition into your
new University life. Stay true to your

balance between your academics

In my 1st year, I was bombarded with
the notions of trying to adapt to this
new lifestyle. I decided to work in the
Rex Mini Mart and quickly became
supervisor. I continued to learn, grow
and adapt to my new surroundings
until I left the hall after serving two

Who is Paula Powlett?
This is a good question. I laughed
when I read it. To be honest I am not
fully aware of who Paula Powlett is
and I like that, I like finding out what
makes me happy and sad, what
excites me and what doesn’t and I
think that’s what university is all about
finding out who you are :)
As a regional student, how would
you describe being part of the
Rexan family and how it has
impacted you?
Everything in life impacts you in some
way or another and moving to Jamaica
from Barbados and becoming a part
of the Rexan family is no different. Let
me first say I absolutely love all of my
Rexan family! Being able to interact
with people from all cultures and
walks of life - it is amazing. Becoming
a Rexan has opened my eyes to so
many different things I have learned
so much about myself and I handle
situations differently. One of the best
feelings to have is to know someone
supports you and being a part of
the Rexan family and know 800+
people support you there is no way to
describe that feeling.

What are some of your plans as
Miss Rex 2013 for the upcoming
year?
As Miss Rex Nettleford Hall 2013, I
hope to meet and interact with as
many Rexans as possible. I try to
be a very approachable and open
person so I hope that any Rexan can
feel comfortable and come talk to me.
I hope to hear their ideas for anything
that will push the hall forward. I also
hope to work very closely with the
Little Black Dress Society as my
platform because I have some cool
and exciting ideas I can’t wait to try.
What advice do you have for
Freshers in taking advantage of
the many opportunities Rex and
the University?
To all future Rexans I say find the
balance and get involved. Rex
Nettleford Hall and the University of
the West Indies will open its arms
wide and embrace and assist you in
anything you want to try to experience.
The University of the West Indies is
your place to shine so get out and
don’t let anyone dull your shine !

The residents of Rex Nettleford Hall has the best facilities available to
students. These facilities include the following:
Laundromat: Opened daily except
Mondays from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. The
laundry is equipped with state of the
art washers, dryers (operated by
tokens). This facility is available at a
cost of $100 per load. A laundry area
with washing sinks and clothes lines
are also located on each cluster.
Computer Rooms: Working with
flexible opening hours, the computer
rooms offer printing services at an
affordable cost, LAN internet access
with personal work spaces.
Study Room: Spacious, quiet,
air-conditioned and fitted with 26
individual cubicles, the study room is
available for late night and day-time
studying.
The Multi-Purpose Room
(MPR): One of the largest common
spaces on the campus, with a seating
capacity of 300, it is usually a buzz for
seminars, workshops, etc.
Red Square: The centre of most
recreational activity on hall, Red
Square hosts Frass Fridays, Cricket,
Lyming and many other activities.
Gazebo: A recreational area behind
Cluster 6 and Clluster 5 for residents.
Botanical Park: Picturesque
environment behind Cluster 8 for
residents to lyme, study and host
events

who enters or leaves the
domicile after closing hours is
responsible for securing the
outside door.
• Do not leave your room door
open.
• Keep all doors locked.
• Do not leave doors propped/
jammed open.

habitual screaming lulls
residents into a false sense of

• Do not tamper with locks; report
defects to the facilities office,

• Do not admit strangers.
• Do not hang signs which indicate
your absence and the time you
plan to return to your room.
