Activity 3.

1
Prior Reflections The picture and caption make me think that the student is not cognitively engage in her learning. I can prevent it from happening in my class by: (1) Give students opportunities to manage their own learning. (2) Conduct a variety of activities to attract students attention to engage in the activities. (3) Give students opportunities to share and discuss their understanding with the others through cooperative learning. (4) Plan activities that can engage students cognitively. (5) Give students opprtunities to construct their own understanding about some topics. (6) Recognise, value and activate students prior knowledge (7) Teach students how to inquire using questions.

The activity conducted in class was group discussion. First, teacher divided the students into a group of 3 to solve a problem related to the topic. A problem was given to each group. Students read the questions, they share and discuss about their understanding about the questions. After that, they will come out with one solution and share in the class.

In this activity, some of the students participate actively (cognitive engagement occur), while some were sleeping members in the groups. Students who engage cognitively used their prior knowledge to construct their own understanding about the problem and discuss their understanding with the other members. Students who become the sleeping member just talk nonsense in the discussion, they did not discuss seriously in the activity. Besides that, they do not have interest to get involve in the discussion. On the other hands, since students were being allocated randomly, some of the group was consisted of weak students. They dont understand the questions given and they dont have any ideas on how to solve the given problems. They dont know how to discuss.

From the observation, we have decided that we need to regroup the students where this time we consider students abilities. Each group will be consisted of students with different

abilities. Besides that, may be some of the students who feel shy to express themselve face to face. A blog can be developed where students can share their opinions online, some of the shy students may speak up through the blog.

Reflections Students are cognitively engage when they can construct and express their understanding about the topic during group discussion. When students know how to express their understanding about the topic, meaning that, they have tried to think and about the topic, they are engaged cognitively in their learning. I agreed with the statement that learner learns better when they are cognitively engaged. This is because learning is occurred when students actively participate in their learning. They understand what they are doing and learning. They understand their own strengths and weaknesses.
