4. a) Write the structure of EDTA. Discuss the principle of the EDTA titration for the
determination of hardness of water and describe the experimental procedure for
the same.
b) 50 ml. of standard hard water containing 1 mg of pure calcium carbonate per ml,
consumed 20 ml of EDTA in the titration using eriochome – black – T indicator.
50 ml. of hard water sample required. 25 ml of the same EDTA. 50 ml. of the
same hard water sample after boiling and filtering consumed 18 ml of EDTA.
Calculate the temporary and permanent hardness of water sample.

4. a) What are zeolites? How do they function in removing hardness of water? What
are the limitations of the process?
b) The hardness of one lakh litres of water is completely removed by passing
through a zeolite softner. The system is regenerated by 400 ml. of Sodium
chloride solution containing 100 g/L of Sodium Chlordie. Calculate the hardness
of the water, softened.
5. a) What are prokaryotes and eukaryotes? What are the differences between them?
And give suitable examples.
b) Explain the composition of cell wall of all living cells.
8. Explain how plasma proteins contribute for maintaining acid base balance and
add a note on the biochemical measurements of acid base status.
