A cleft lip is a birth defect that affects new born infants, and often occurs with a cleft palate; though the two deformities do not have to happen together. A cleft is an opening that occurs, in the case of a cleft lip, around the mouth where the tissues did not fuse together before birth. C left lip occurs in about one of seven hundred births, and can be more prevalent in Asians. Below are questions about cleft lip that have been answered by the Experts.

If a child is born with a cleft lip and cleft palate, may the child have genetic or developmental problems?
It is possible that a child that is born with a cleft palate can have other genetic or developmental problems. There are many different genetic syndromes that can have association to the occurrence of a cleft lip. If a parent is worried about their child that was born with a cleft lip or palate, there are pediatric geneticists that can do genetics evaluation.

What are some of the things thought to be cleft lip causes?

C left lip can be caused by genetic abnormalities, but it is also thought that there are some things that are environmental factors that also play a part in causing cleft lip. There are some medications that are thought to be a causative agent. The use of alcohol as well as smoking while a woman is pregnant, has also been thought to be a cause. Having a low folic acid level has also been thought to possibly be a causative agent.

Can a cleft lip or palate in children cause slow growth or weight gain?
C left lip in and of itself does not slow a childs growth or slow a childs weight gain. However there are on occasion other congenital malformations that have been associated with cleft lip, which affect other organs. These malformations can be the causes of slow growth or weight gain. For example if a malformation has occurred in the lungs, it can lead to infections that are repetitious. Infections that are either chronic in nature or are repetitious can cause decreased or slow weight gain. Learn More

Can a cleft lip be seen in utero via ultrasound?

In many situations it is possible for a cleft lip to be seen through an ultrasound. In many cases ultrasounds may have to be redone to make sure that what may be thought to be a cleft lip is not something else. Babies are able to yawn in utero and this can make visualization of the babys lips hard. It is also possible for the umbilical cord to be in the way. In most cases a follow up ultrasound may be performed to eliminate or confirm the suspicion of a cleft lip. C left lip is a facial deformity that occurs when the tissue do not properly fuse during development before birth. C left lip and palate can also be associated with other genetic abnormalities; an evaluation by a pediatric geneticist can be performed to rule out these abnormalities. Outside of genetic abnormalities, there are environmental factors that can also play a part in the cause of cleft lip, a few of these are being deficient in folic acid and smoking during pregnancy. C left lips are often able to be seen on an ultrasound while the baby is still in utero. Any questions about cleft lip can be asked of the Experts.
