1. INTRODUCTION Our style in presenting letters, reports, and presentations is key to how we are viewed in the marketplace.

To ensure that Barents Group sets forth a consistently high quality and professional image and to enable Barents consultants around the world to deliver products at the same high standard consistently, this Format and tyle Guidelines was written. One further benefit is that once these standards are used throughout the Firm, we will be able to transfer and produce documents from office to office. The manual sets out format standards and style guidelines for letters, proposals, reports, and presentations. amples of each written product are set out on the page facing discussion of that product wherever possible. !icrosoft "ord commands to use are in brackets and italici#ed. The manual closes with a word list that includes words commonly misspelled and words unique to our work. To help us achieve a unified look, this first chapter, $ntroduction, describes the font to be used, general layout of material, tools, software, templates available to you, and a list of whom to call with any problems in using these standards. HOW TO USE THIS BOOK Once you%ve read this book and understand how the formats should be applied, learn the formats thoroughly. For managers, the formats help you to review documents and check them for logic and ensure that the arguments put forth are sound. For consultants, the formats can help you to write because they provide a structure for you. They can also help to ensure that your writing is logical and cohesive. For administrative staff, the formats provide you with a logical sequencing of topics and standards to ensure that documents are consistent, professional, and of the highest quality. This font, used in this manual, is the default for all Barents standard templates. $t is the font to be used in body te+t, headers, and footers. For those of you who have the cyrillic alphabet installed on your computer, use 'ewton ,TT, point si#e )-.. in the /arawin software package. LAYOUT: GENERAL MARGINS AND SPACING The Barents templates that you access from !icrosoft "ord for letters, memos, and fa+es contain our requirements for margins and spacing0 1ocuments should be on either &2 paper or 34)5* + )) paper6 this depends on the office%s location.
