The compact configuration of the DTX550K is centered on the Snare, Hi-Hat and Ride Cymbal, three of the core components of any drum kit. With an amazing feel and a diverse array of functions, the DTX550K comes with an impressive range of sounds that make it an ideal choice, whether practicing at home or performing live on stage. As the focal point of the drum kit, the DTX550K features a newly-developed DTX-PAD Snare, the XP100SD. In developing this drum pad we set out to do more than just offer a drumhead that plays like an acoustic drum. We worked with top musicians to find out exactly how the feel of a drum encourages a drummer to keep playing. DTX-PAD is the result of this collaboration, and features a Textured Cellular
Silicone Head with an air bubble configuration optimized to give it the perfect response for continuous play and subtle stickwork. Natural, comfortable feel thats perfect for performing on stage or practicing at home Astonishingly quiet, making home practice easy Proven durability Floating construction offers the sensitivity required for a broad dynamic range while remaining vibration-free 3-zone construction for open and closed rimshots Easy tuning and snappy adjustment thanks to a conveniently located pad control

In the last issue we started a comprehensive Quick Guide for the Yamaha DTX series, which refers to the electronic drums (E-Drums) DTXTREME III, DTX900K, and DTX950K. These first episodes issue such topics as sound editing, Drum Kits, Drum Voices and sampling. Even if this Quick Guide is not intended to replace the manual, we will start with an introduction to fundamental concepts and basic functions, since knowledge of these is essential for programming individual Drum Kits. Then you learn with practical examples, how to realise an individual, assertive sound..
difference between INPUT (allocation of Voice Sets to Trigger Input Jacks) and SOURCE (allocation of Drum Voices to Trigger Input Sources) - switched with SF5 - was discussed at length in the last episode. This is about the other sub-functions of the VOICE displays (F2), which each have a different appearance depending on the SF5 setting (INPUT / SOURCE).
SF 1 SELECT
Here Voice Sets are assigned to the Trigger Input Jacks or Drum Voices to the Trigger Input Sources of the Pads. When the INPUT display is active, the SF1 display appears as shown here:

The parameter Input (1), which is set to snare here, determines to which Trigger Input Jack (= Pad) a Voice Set is assigned. You can set the Voice Set Category (2) and Voice Set Number (3). The available Voice Sets are listed in the Data List on pages 3 - 4. When the SOURCE display is active, the SF1 display appears as follows:
In the SOURCE display the volume parameter of each Pad Zone is individually adjustable with a numerical value. PAGE 2 contains the parameters Effect Send Level, Pan, and Output Select:
Again the parameters in the INPUT display are shown as controls while in the SOURCE display they can be set with numerical values.
The parameter Source (1), which is set to kick here, determines the Trigger Input Source (= Pad Zone) a Voice can be selected for. You can set the Voice Category (2) and Drum Voice Number (3). The available Drum Voices are listed in the Data List on pages 5 - 8.
SF3 EQ-TONE
PAGE 1 contains the EQ settings, PAGE 2 features the sound generator parameters Attack, Decay, Release, Filter, and Resonance (Q).
SF4 OTHER
This sub-function - also divided into two PAGES offers the following parameters: Mono/Poly Alternate Group Receive Key Off Velocity Sensitivity Depth Velocity Sensitivity Offset Slider Select
SF2 OUT/TUNE
The sub-function SF-2 OUT / TUNE is spread over two pages (PAGE 1 + 2), which can be selected using the cursor keys (> <). PAGE 1 contains the parameters Volume and Tuning (finetuning):

edit the selected snare Pad - without having changed the edited Pad by the playing of the other Pads or Pad Zones. You now have a first overview of the different parameters of the Voice Sets and Drum Voices. Now you will get a chance to start with a practical example of your first own editing. We start with the easier option:
Save the new drum kit when youre finished with your programming by pressing ENTER / STORE. You will find the Drum Kit on the selected storage position in the User Bank The voice parameters of SF2 to SF4 were deliberately left out in this example. These parameters are already set to perfect values that correspond to the used Voice Sets, making further editing not essential. A more individual sound editing will be covered in
the next episode, which will appear in the next but one edition. The allocation of Voices to the Pad Zones in the SOURCE display will also be discussed. The next edition of MOTIF News Guide will contain a Quick Guide to the DTX-MULTI 12. Peter Krischker

The DTX Electronic Percussion Pad MULTI-12 was introduced in the MOTIF News Guide 02/2010. It uses many of the high-end features and sounds from the DTX and MOTIF series and provides an optimum tool for live drumming, productions or rehearsals. With over 1,200 high-class sounds - including newlydeveloped drum, percussion and keyboard sounds - the DTX-12 MULTI enriches any musical situation. Up to 200 User Sets can be programmed and added with effects to get ready for every conceivable musical style with the best sounds around. In addition, the large 64MB Flash-ROM Wave-Memory can be filled with additional samples which then can be assigned to the Pads. Now the brand new soundset Oriental Percussion for the DTX-MULTI 12 is available for registered users. It is provided by EASY SOUNDS on behalf of Yamaha Music Europe - free of charge.
The download package includes the following: 36 Patterns 22 Kits 129 User Waves (18 MB Samples) The soundset has been designed primarily for traditional and modern Turkish music. Dhol
The dhol and also dohol is a percussion musical instrument widely used in the Indian subcontinent, especially the Punjab region, and especially among the Sikhs of East Punjab. Apart from Punjab, Dhol has been adapted into the music of other regions throughout South Asia and abroad including the Assam Valley (during Assams Bihu festival), Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sindh and Maharashtra. It is very popular in modern Punjabi music. The dhol is a drum that dates back to the 15th century. It was probably introduced to the Indian subcontinent via the Persian drum type dohol (duhul). The evidence for this is found in Ain-i-Akbari, which describes the use of duhul in the orchestra of the Mogul emperor Akbar. The Indo-Aryan word dhol appears in print around 1800 in the treatise Sangitasara. The dhol is most commonly associated with Punjabi music and dance. It was used in war by the Sikhs and later to celebrate successful harvests by Jatt landowners. This drum became the ground roots of modern Bhangra music.

The dhol is a double-sided barrel drum (straight barrels also exist) played mostly as an accompanying instrument in regional music forms. In Qawwali music, the term dhol is used to describe a similar, but smaller drum used with the smaller tabla, as a replacement for the left hand tabla drum. The typical sizes of the drum vary slightly from region to region. In Punjab, the dhol remains large and bulky to produce the preferred loud bass. In other regions, dhols can be found in varying shapes and sizes and made with different woods and materials (fiberglass, steel, plastic). The drum consists of a wooden barrel with animal hide or synthetic skin stretched over its open ends, covering them completely. These skins can be stretched or loosened with a tightening mechanism made up of either interwoven ropes, or nuts and bolts. Tightening or loosening the skins subtly alters the pitch of the drum sound. The stretched skin on one of the ends is thicker and produces a deep, low frequency (higher bass) sound and the other thinner one produces a higher frequency sound. Dhols with synthetic, or plastic, treble skins are very common. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhol
Darbuka
The Goblet drum (also Chalice drum, Darbuka or Doumbek) is a goblet shaped hand drum used mostly in music originating in countries near the Middle East. Its thin, responsive drumhead and resonance help it produce a distinctively crisp sound. Though it is not known exactly when these drums were first made, they are known to be of ancient origin. Traditionally, goblet drums may be made of clay, metal, or wood. Modern goblet drums are also sometimes made of synthetic materials, including fiberglass. Modern metal drums are commonly made of aluminum (either cast, spun, or formed from a sheet) or copper. Some aluminum drums may have a mother-of-pearl inlay, which is purely decorative. Traditional drum heads were animal skin, commonly goat. Modern drums commonly use synthetic materials for drum heads, including mylar and fiberglass. Goblet drums are played with a much lighter touch and quite different strokes (sometimes including rolls or quick rhythms articulated with the fingertips) than hand drums such as the djembe, found in Africa. There are two main types of goblet drums. The Egyptian style has rounded edges around the head, whereas the Turkish style exposes the edge of the head. The exposed edge allows closer access to the head so finger-snapping techniques can be done, but the hard edge discourages the rapid rolls possible with the Egyptian style. Like in the previous episode of this workshop this will be done based on examples and on the basis of actual requirements for us keyboard players. Basic and already described procedures are not explained again in detail, but build on the experience you should have gained from the previous examples. As its name suggests the key [DRUM ASSIGN] adds a drum Part to a Voice or Performance. Which can be done in all possible combinations of the previously discussed Performance modes LAYER and SPLIT. But first an answer to the possibly emerging question: Cool - but: Why? Suppose that youre on a band rehearsal. The singer and the guitarist have already arrived, but the men from the groove division bass and drums are stuck in traffic, with no estimated end. Now its up to you to use the time and still make sense in an usual band con-
text: You could use the opportunity to shine with the flexibility of your new instrument, and of course your acquaintance with it. So with a few easy steps you change your specific Voices or Performances to match the requirements of the songs to be rehearsed. As in the last issue we want to use the Voice Mode as the starting point for the following example and build the performance from the scratch. For the keyboard part of the song a LAYER combination of electric piano and pad is required - in our specific occasion you are about to add some bass and drums. Again, you are free to choose any Voices you like, but for the sake of this little experiment, it would be advisable to move at least in the Categories Im using here. First create the LAYER combination the way you already learned.

With the two remaining parameters in the Edit menu Arp 1(-5) Type some quick and effective adjustments can be made. With GTime Rate the note length in the Arpeggio is affected. Depending on your taste, you can use this with negative values to cut off some legato-feeling of the bass (which is not always that simple in real life...). A value of for example -20 is suitable as the basis for your own adjustments. The parameter Vel Rate offers itself to bring the Velocities of different ARP Types in line with each other. For the quieter ARP-Types 1 and 2 you can lift up the Drums by rising their Velocity. You can get a little acoustic impression from this example, I simply played a few chords with the ARP variants. The mp3 file can be downloaded here: http://www.easysounds.eu/PC-ARP.mp3 Well, by overlooking the step-by-step instructions above, this may appear a somewhat complex issue which is misleading, however. As already mentioned, as soon you have gained routine for these procdures you will be surprised how quickly those results are achieved in comparison to other devices. With this part the topic of the Performance Creator is officially declared as being closed. Now enjoy your S90 XS / S70 XS. hp

The following contains a selection of questions and their answers concerning Yamaha synthesizers, found in the Yamaha Synth Forum and answered by the Yamaha Europe Support Team. On the request of many readers the most important FAQs from the MOTIF News Guides 2007 to 2009 are combined. Since the MOTIF News Guide is now published in two languages (German and English) it gained a lot of new readers which unfortunately have missed the older FAQs. And all long-time readers will get a smart overview.
MOTIF XS:
Answer: The MOTIF XS uses a volatile DIMM memory for the samples. It is therefore essential to re-load the samples after switching on again. The Voice settings are still present, only the samples are lacking. You have to save your new composition of the two Voice Banks as an all-File. This file can be defined in the UTILITY mode as an AUTOLOAD file which is then automatically loaded every time the XS is switched on.
Like described in the Manual Im able to store Voices using samples at a selected location. This works very well. But as soon as I switch off the XS, the sounds are no longer present at their assigned locations, although the name of the Voices is shown on the display.

MOTIF-RACK XS:
How do I perform a backup of the data stored on my MOTIF-RACK XS? I want to update to the latest OS.
Answer:
Is it possible to use the Assignable Outputs in addition to the Outputs (L & R), so I have two stereo output signals?
Answer:
The answer to the question depends on what was changed on the factory settings. For they are indeed recoverable by a Factory Set (UTILITY). If you have changed User Voices, you can secure them completely using the editor software (Synchronisation, type Voice). Multis however must be dumped separately with the editor software (Synchronisation, type Current). In addition, you should - also with the editor secure the global data. By the way: Backing up the internal data should

MOTIF-RACK ES:
Of course you always have to send the SysEx message after having altered it and then check the display to see which parameter value is actually set there. Set ARP-Tempo to 120 = F0 43 10 7F 00 36 00 28 00 78 F7 Here the programming is much simpler. The first data byte can be left to 00, it is only necessary to change it to 01 for higher speed values. While figuring the data byte values it is worth a try to switch temporarily to the decimal view (if that is possible in the used sequencer software). For the decimal value here corresponds exactly to the tempo value. Source: ProfSynth
I would like to select ARP-Type No. 519 (DrPc SpanishG) via Sys-Ex and set the ARP-Tempo to 120. How does it work?
Answer:
After the Sys-Ex messages with MSB and LSB two data bytes follow the address (eg 36 00 14). So not like for Bank Selects two messages (MSB + LSB) are needed, instead the data bytes 1 and 2 are the MSB + LSB within the Sys-Ex message. The required values, although not documented, can be found relatively quick. The second data byte is normally used for switching to a higher value range. Often these
higher values are not needed so that second data byte can be left set to 0 (see Tempo example below). Select ARP-Typ No. 519 (DrPc SpanishG) = F0 43 10 7F 00 36 00 14 OD 27 F7 Since this Arpeggio is rather far back in the list, a high value (0D) for the first data byte is used. This is the last value group. Within the value group of 0D the value 27 finally calls the desired Arpeggio. How do we to get this values? Simply by trying. You only have to check which Arpeggios are called up at 00, at 01, etc. When you get to the general area with the first data byte (MSB), the fine tuning is made with the second data byte (LSB). 19
MOTIF-RACK XS:
How can I achieve that Voices in a Multi sound true to their original from the Voice mode?
Answer:
You can ensure the faithful reproduction of a Voices sound in the Multi mode by activating this function: Part Common - General - Parm. with Voice With this feature turned on, all settings of a Voice, even their Arpeggio settings are adopted in the Multi Part whenever you select another Voice. If the function is not enabled, the Common Set-

tings of the Multi Part - eventually adopted from a previously selected Voice - remain active. In any case, the Chorus and Reverb sends are to be set manually. A different sound can also be the result of different settings for the System Effects of the Multi, which are used for all Parts. If for example the Voice uses a Delay effect as CHORUS, it should also be set in the Multi, if you want the Voice to sound exactly the same. This Delay effect however would then by applied to the other parts of the Multi as well. Source: ProfSynth
For the copied Parts individual Receive Channels can be set in this menu: MIXING - EDIT - PART - VOICE Receive Channel This also allows separate control of the Parts with the sliders and knobs. Here are the steps to copy a Performance to a Song Mixing:
SONG MIXING JOB F3 Copy SF3 Performance Select the desired Performance and enable the options Reverb, Chorus, etc. - if desired Confirm with ENTER + YES
MOTIF XS:
By default, the Performance Parts are copied to the Mixing Parts 1-4. With the parameter Current Mix Part you can alternatively select the Mixing Parts 5-8, 9-12, or 13-16 as target Parts of the copying process. Source: Keyboard Support
You are able to assign Performances to Song or Pattern Mixing Parts indirectly by using the Job Performance Copy. The Parts of the Performance are copied to the Mixing Parts 1-4, if desired including their settings for Effects, Arpeggio, EQ. The copied Parts are then set in the Mixing to the Receive Channel 1 and thus can be played like the Performance. 20

The ultimate analogue extension for MOTIF and S series models! In collaboration with Yamaha Music Europe EASY SOUNDS is producing and distributing an ever-growing sound- and sample library of excellent quality for the synthesizers of the MOTIF and S series. The newest soundset Phat Analog is all about analogue synthesizers. The main goal is to emulate the legendary monophonic Minimoog and especially its timeless Synthlead sounds by using samples. Of the 32 Waveforms (or Multisamples) we created 18 were sampled from the Minimoog. Another focus was laid on samples of the Jupiter 8 (JP-8), which are mainly used for Pad, Sync, and Arpeggio sounds for this soundset. And finally the samples from the Minimoog and the Jupiter8 got company by some other analogue samples. Overall we had a perfect playability in mind with com prehensive realtime control using the controllers, knobs, and buttons, refined by a tasteful effect programming. The purpose was to support the virtuosity of the player.
The 32 Split-type Performances for the XS series are mostly built following this pattern: The left side of the keyboard plays an accompaniment (i.e. Drums, Bass, Pad/Arpeggio) while the right side is used to play a Synthlead part. The Performances not only use analogue sounds, but traditional instruments as well. This results in a refreshing diversity which matches different styles and musical genres. Some of the Performances are modified Preset Performances from the MOTIF XS. The versions for MOTIF-RACK XS, S90 XS / S70XS, MOTIF-RACK ES, MO6 / MO8, and S90 ES are using the ROM-Waveforms. These also contain high-quality analogue synthwaves, but are limited in terms of length and complexity. Heres an overview of the content of Phat Analog: 128 Voices (all versions) 32 Performances (MOTIF XS, MOTIF-RACKXS, S90 XS / S70 XS) 32 User-Waveforms / 120 MB Samples (MOTIFXS, MOTIF ES) Phat Analog is exclusively available from EASY SOUNDS: http://www.easysounds.de
