I CAN'T TELL
you how many
times in recent
months I have
heard from friends
who are frustrated
that they are
gaining weight and
don't know why.
I'm not going to lie,
I myself have put
on some unwanted
pounds this past
year and I'm quite
frustrated about it. As someone who knows better and
as the Editor in Chief of a htness magazine, ! have no
excuses. So I won't give any.
What I do know is this: as we get older, our
metabolism inevitably slows down. So, if you were
to change nothing (diet, exercise routine) as you get
older, you would gain weight anyway. The key is to
constantly change things up. And you HAVE to eat 4
to 6 small meals a day. When I'm eating every few
hours, I drop weight. When I eat three times a day, I
gain or maintain weight. Eating frequently is a must,
especially since weight loss is 80 percent diet!
This magazine and the Certihed Fitness Nutrition

I kept telling myself, one day I'll get
in better shape. The problem was that day never
came. All I found myself doing was making excuses and justify-

I have four beautiful daughters and we have
been through a lot together over the past
seven years. My youngest daughter had a 15% chance
of survival. After several life saving surgeries, she has beaten
the odds. Those years of never leaving my daughters side
though, took a toll on me physically and during that time I
ballooned up to a very unhealthy and obese weight of 185 lbs!
I was told by my doctor that my bone density was equivalent
to a woman in her 60's! I was only 38 years old and knew

CELEBRATES 17 YEARS
Max Muscle Stockton recently celebrated its 17-year anniversary. It was a
great day as we wanted to give back to Stockton for supporting Max Muscle
for more than17 years. There were several vendors, including Evogen,
MuscleEgg and Europa, handing out samples. Sports Clips had a booth as
well. IFBB Bikini Pro Jen Stevens and IFBB Pro Vicki Dowel (both of whom
are Team Max Muscle athletes) were serving up samples of Emerge all day.
Vince Carter from Crosst209 also had a booth as Vince was a huge help
in supplying the bench press contest and judging the event. Marcus Jose
was the winner as he benched his weight of 160 pounds 38 times. He won
$750 and Emilio Doolittle took second, winning $500.

SoCal Muscle would like to thank Max Muscle Sports Nutrition for their support
of their 1st Annual "STRIKE OUT! Cancer Baseball Tournament," held on Sunday
October 20th, 2013 at March Air Reserve Base. They were completely sold out,
with 10 teams competing in 2 divisions for 1st place bragging rights. Teams came
from Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, Orange and San Bernardino counties!
Most importantly, they raised $500 for the Childhood Cancer Foundation in Loma
Linda, Calif. As you can see in the picture above, the boys looked sharp because
of all the generous donations.

Henry Corrales (left) is a MMA ghter and a friend of

after he won the bantamweight title on Halloween for King

My name is Katina Bennett and my
son is Evan. Evan is a 7th grader
at Pleasant Valley Middle School in
Placerville, California. We shop at our
local Max Muscle store and Evan uses
Max Green Synergy, Max LiquiCarn
and PowerMax 1000 protein.
Evan is a straight-A student who
plays football, basketball and
competes in wrestling. In wrestling
last season he was undefeated as a
6th grader in his weight class of 168
lbs. This football season he has been
selected to play in The Shriners Bowl,
with the Eastbay Youth All American
Team (an All Star football team). They
will play in January 2014 at the
Alamodome in Texas.
In February, Evan will represent his
country when he participates as a
member of a U.S. National Football
Team that will take on national teams
from Canada at Maverick Stadium
(University of Texas at Arlington).
Evan has had many accomplish-
ments recently and I thought they were
worth sharing, especially because he
uses Max Muscle products to keep
him healthy and get through tough
games and matches.

As we head into the tail end of
the holiday season and get ready
for upcoming holidays, I just wanted
to remind you all that you don't
have to give into the temptations
to overindulge and possibly pack on
extra pounds just because there is a
celebration going on. Here are some
simple suggestions to help you keep
things under control:
1. Try to go for a quick walk in the
morning and evening. It is always
best to walk after your last meal and
before your hrst. As you walk, the
increased oxygen, endorphins and
adrenaline kick in and can lead to
great conversations with your loved
ones.
2. If the kids are playing outside,
jump in and have some fun. Plan a
few family activities around outdoor
games that are fun, calorie burners!
Kids love it when the adults join in.
3. Chew your food extra well. The
more you chew, the less you are
inclined to eat. You can actually
trick your brain into thinking you are
eating more food and you will feel
full sooner. This also promotes better
digestion and elimination.
4. Drink plenty of water. Water has

no calories and helps you digest and
process foods. It will also make you
feel full faster. In addition to this, water
helps to cleanse and purify the body.
Shoot for a gallon a day. You may be
surprised how good you feel.
5. Make sure you grab a quick snack
before the party starts, so you wont
feel famished.
6. Try using light food alternatives.
In this modern era, there are many low
calorie versions of almost everything.
There are many alternatives that taste
very much like the original high-calorie
version. See if you can add a few of
these items to your menu to help
reduce high calorie content of some of
our favorite foods like butter or whipped
cream.
7. Use healthy oils when you cook.
Olive, canola, walnut and sesame are
some healthy and great-tasting oils.
Walnut oil has a high smoking point
so you can fry meats and veggies at a
higher temperature without smoking up
the house. I am sure you will love the
extra havor and healthy fatty acids.
8. Pay attention to your body. Many
times the food just tastes so good
that we eat way beyond the point of
comfort. You feel full and sluggish
and of course the natural progression
leads to a couch and a nice nap. Just
remember when you sleep so does
your metabolism, now all those excess
calories will start heading from your lips
to your hips.
9. Try to stay controllably hungry.
When you get too hungry, you will
almost always overeat!
So, go ahead and indulge a little, and
be sure to follow a few of these simple
tricks to help you minimize your weight
gains during the holiday season. After

Kids Less Cardiovascularly Fit
Than Their Parents Were

Think your little gymnast or tennis player is a shining example of htness?


Maybe not, according to recent research presented at the American Heart
Association's Scientihc Sessions.
Researchers analyzed 50 studies on running htness involving more than
25 million children ages 9-17 across the world over the course of +6 years.
While the data varied somewhat from country to country, they found that
endurance has declined consistently by about 5 percent each decade (6
percent in the United States). Specihcally, today's kids run approximately 1.5
minutes slower than kids of 30 years ago and are roughly 15 percent less ht
from a cardiovascular standpoint than their parents were as children.
The research concluded that while kids may be involved in physical
activities like
gymnastics or
tennis, not all types
of htness relate
well to health. The
true measure of
good health and
lower risk for health
problems as adults
- is cardiovascular
htness, or the
ability to exercise
vigorously for a
long time (such as
running multiple
laps around a track).

While earlier studies suggested that


as many as 30 percent of obese people
are metabolically healthy, meaning that
despite being overweight, they are free of
risk factors for diabetes or cardiovascular
disease, a new study claims this just isnt
so at least in the long run.
Researchers from the University of Texas
Health Science Center analyzed data from
the San Antonio Heart Study to determine
whether people who were metabolically
healthy remained so over time. Those who
were free of or only had one metabolic
health problem, such as elevated blood
pressure, elevated triglyceride or blood
sugar levels, insulin resistance and
decreased HDL (good) cholesterol, were
deemed metabolically healthy. The
analysis found that increased body mass
index was linked to an elevated risk of
developing diabetes and cardiovascular
disease over the following 6-10 years.
The downside? Even if youre fat and t
now, you may not remain so over time if you
continue to pack on the pounds.
Consistency of Sleep and Wake Times
Important for Weight Control

Most of us know that getting enough sleep helps to keep


the weight off. But new research nds that the consistency of
bedtime and awake time can also inuence body fat.
Researchers from Brigham Young University in Utah
studied more than 300 women from two United States
Universities over the course of several weeks to determine
how sleep may inuence body composition.
What they found? Those with a consistent bedtime, and
even more so, a consistent wake time, had a lower body fat
composition. In addition, those who got less than 6.5 hours of
sleep or more than 8.5 hours of sleep had a higher body fat.
The sweet spot: 8-8.5 hours of sleep per night.

as many as 300,000-600,000 Americans develop deep vein
thrombosis (DVT) each year, a condition that occurs when a blood clot
forms in a large vein, often in the lower extremities. When you have
DVT, part of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs, causing a
pulmonary embolism an emergent situation. Excess weight increases
the risk of developing DVT, said Richard Kelley, MD, emergency room
physician in Austin, Texas, and author of The Fitness Response, because
it increases the pressure in the veins of the pelvis and legs, raising the
potential for a blood clot to form.

Looking for a new plan of action to shed that weight once and
for all? Whatever you do, dont turn to fad diets that may cause
you to lose weight very quickly. When you lose weight rapidly,
youre losing muscle as well as fat. This may actually cause health
problems, said Steven Masley, MD, president of The Masley
Optimal Health Center, and author of forthcoming book 30-Day
Heart Tune Up: A Breakthrough Medical Plan to Prevent and Reverse
Heart Disease. Abnormal weight loss may actually worsen blood
pressure, cholesterol and cardiovascular risk, he added.
One fad diet gone wrong was "The Last Chance Diet," created by
Dr. Roger Linn, who published a book by the same name in 1976.
One of the rst liquid protein diets, the Last Chance Diet consisted
of drinking Prolinn, a low-quality protein drink derived from the
hooves and hides of slaughterhouse animals. Unfortunately, some 60
sudden deaths occurred as a result of this diet, thought to be due to
abnormal heart rhythms that resulted from shrinkage of heart muscle
and electrolyte imbalances.
Most health experts believe that the key to safe weight loss is
taking it off slowly (one to two pounds per week), which preserves
lean muscle while losing fat mass. Even better, said Dr. Masley, is
actually gaining muscle mass while losing fat mass something that
can be accomplished with a combination of healthy eating and
increased physical activity.

Brian Furer, a 38-year-old businessman, broker and
owner of VIP Real Estate in Denver, is a man of extremes.
He has enjoyed both hnancial success and times when
he felt nothing shy of destitute. He has been athletic and
active playing college sports and semi pro football, and
experienced times when he was terribly out of shape and
overweight, struggling to even put his shoes on or walk up
stairs. He has been on the held and on the sidelines. He has
been a champion of his own health and a wanna be.
Brian, a self-professed workaholic, admits to drinking a
Rockstar energy drink for breakfast, having huge helpings
of fast food and weekend eating and drinking binges. Tired
of feeling fat, bloated and hungover - poorly fueled by
energy drinks, fast food and heavy meals he knew he
needed a change.
The summer of 2012, Brian, at the height of his
unhealthy phase, attended a bodybuilding competition to
support several of his healthy, competing friends. visiting
with an old friend, Kevin Larson, Brian said, One of the
these days ! am going to do a competition." Kevin, who
knew Brian from his party days looked right at him and
said Brian, you are never going to do a show, who are you
trying to fool?"
The charade was over. Brian's friend had totally called
him out. The comment really resonated with Brian: it
humbled him. Kevin only knew me from my nightlife, party
lifestyle. Heck, ! don't blame him for doubting me, knowing
me as he did, ! would have doubted me too," admits Brian.
Harsh reality hit me: ! was a `Wanna Be' and ! needed to
make a serious change."
After a lot of introspection, Brian realized with his
extremist personality he needed to book his workouts on
his calendar like client meetings and he needed a landmark
date, a hard and fast goal to work toward. He picked the
Northern Colorado, a NPC competition in April 2013.
He started working out January 2, 2013 and took a balls
to the wall, 100 percent or nothing" mentality in working
toward his goal. He had only 3.5 months to prepare.
Brian started the MaxForm Life Challenge in January
2013 at 232 pounds. By Nay 30, he weighed 173 pounds
and was just a day away from his second bodybuilding
competition: the NPC Nile High.

Brian is quick to give credit where credit is due. He

JoLynn Reddon, 41, admits now that she was a feast
and famine kind of girl for many, many years. In the past
she dealt with her weight challenges after motherhood by
going on crazy restrictive yo-yo diets, especially when she
and her family were going on a vacation. I used to stress
so much about what I would wear that I would go on
starvation diets before our trips right up to the vacation and
then fall off the deep end, says JoLynn, who often would
regain any weight loss and then some. Waging a constant
battle with the scale, JoLynn remembers weighing herself
two or three times a day during these fad dieting phases all
while trashing her self-esteem and conhdence time and time
again.
This changed in December 2012 when her husband found

The year 2012 was a great year in
the development of my company, VIP Real
Estate in Colorado, but my workaholic
nature took its toll on my body and my
life. In December 2012, I weighed 232
pounds with full muscle atrophy from lack
of use. I was hung over, out of shape,
didnt t in my clothes, couldnt run, jump,
etc. And I HATED it. I was depressed
and miserable. I knew it was time for a
drastic change! I set my goal on January
2nd to do whatever it took to win Max
Muscle's MaxForm Life Challenge and
take the stage in my rst NPC show, the
Northern Colorado NPC on April 14th,
2013. Coming from so far behind, I was
undertaking the impossible.
To accomplish the impossible, I knew
I could leave no stone unturned. I had to
surround myself with the best of the best,
the cream of the crop, the most advanced
techniques and the greatest knowledge
base. I had to employ every advantage
and apply them with 110 percent effort.
I started with diet and supplementation
from Denvers Mile High Max Muscle,

joined The Gym in Denver that is known to

competitors. I hired its owner, IFBB Pro and
MMA Pro ghter Chris Williamson, the best
of the best. My meals were prepped by
Ready Fit Go and physical imperfections
were corrected with Dry Needling by
Dr. Ben Cowin of Action Spine & Sports
Medicine in Denver. My training partners
were also IFBB Pros. In every area, I sought
out and implemented the best there was.
Then, I emulated them, listened, learned,
trained alongside and took every ounce
of advice I could by the amazing group I
had surrounded myself with and pushed
onward with reckless abandon, ultimate
discipline and unwavering precision. I owe

Military Press on Smith
Machine
This is a primary lift, heavier than
many for shoulders. Before beginning,
position a short backed chair properly
for back support. Test alignment with
QR ZHLJKWV UVW HQVXUH WKDW \RX
can lower the bar from the pressed
position to approximately the base
of your skull, without hitting yourself
on the head! Once weighted, place
hands relatively wide on the bar and
lower the low position slowly and
controlled, then explode back up to
the pressed position.
Do a light warm-up set of 20, then
increase weight for each subsequent
set of 12, 10 and 8 reps.
Dumbbell Military Press
Same reps and sets as the Smith Machine press,
only using dumbbells to engage control and
stabilizer muscles, and hit a different angle!
Smith Machine Upright Rows
With the Smith Machine bar racked low near your
knees, stand facing the bar, feet shoulder-width
apart, grab the bar with about 8-10 inches in
between your hands. As you pull the bar up, lead
with your elbows high, isolating rear shoulder.

Max Sports: You dropped more than 60 pounds and achieved
the strong, lean look that we all want. What was the secret to
your success?
AF: I believe my secret to success was my unwillingness
to fail. All of my friends and family kept saying how they
couldnt do it if they were me, but I actually found it easy
to stay on track once I decided that I wanted to win the
contest. Ive always been a competitive person, so I was in
competition with myself to be the best I could be.
Max Sports: How do you avoid the temptations of eating less-
than-healthy foods and skipping workouts?
AF: I allow myself to have treats once in awhile, but in
moderation. This way I dont feel deprived and am less
likely to binge. As for workouts, I do mine in the morning
before work. Its too easy to convince yourself youre too
tired after work [to hit the gym] or that you should hang
out with friends instead of working out.
Max Sports: Whats the biggest lesson youve learned from
this journey?
AF: Never give up and keep pushing forward, even if you
dont see results because they will come.

NFL. What was the key to your success?
HW: As a child, I was timid, shy and overweight. It

who is 40+ years old and looking to get back into shape?
HW: !t's never too late to change your life. [But it|
might mean you need to take certain precautions to

phenomenal. How did you do it?
MA: I think perseverance, determination and support
from my loving family and friends were the major keys

MA: One morning I woke up and decided I didnt want

Max Sports: Are there any phrases or mantras that you
stick to in order to maintain your healthy lifestyle?
MA: Fail to plan, plan to fail. This phrase helps me
throughout competition season or when Im prepping
for htness photo shoots. Once you have a goal, it's
essential to hnd the path towards achieving it. But
walking this path requires planning. For example, twice
a week I cook and prep my foods for work. I also
schedule workouts throughout the week with friends
and optimize my sleep by planning on going to bed on
time. All of these little practices add up to a lot.

Max Sports: What does it take to become the reigning IKF Light Middleweight
Kickboxing Champion?
SH: I think growing up with parents who demonstrated a strong work ethic
and always encouraged me to do my very best is what made me who I am. My
parents were self-employed and my brother was a two-time World Champion, so
simple character traits, such as perseverance and doing things right the hrst time,
were embedded in me as a young child. This is why Im a success in business
and in the ring.
Max Sports: Was kickboxing your foray into a healthy lifestyle?
SH: I have been in martial arts my entire life, so I have always been very active
and in pretty good condition. However, competing will take your conditioning to
a new level because everyone you go up against in the ring is in great condition
also. But kickbox training for htness is a great way to stay in shape without
having to worry about getting punched or kicked in the head.
Max Sports: What's the biggest lesson you've learned from your kickboxing journey?
SH: I have learned that the human mind is the most powerful thing in the world.
!t can push your physical body no matter how bad you are hurting. Both hghting
and business are 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical.
Max Sports: What is the dehnition of a true champion?
SH: Someone who sets BIG goals and has a burning desire inside to make them
happen, no matter what.

Max Sports: How were you able to achieve such an incredible
weight-loss transformation with the added stress of being
watched by a national television audience?
JN: There were several keys to success during my weight-
loss journey, including the fact that I was fortunate
enough to be on The Biggest Loser and had the help of
some fantastic trainers. But there were also several other
factors, like knowing my statistics and results using my
BodyMedia armband, having the support of my awesome
girlfriend and former cast mate Francy, and also knowing
it was time for me to make the change.
Max Sports: How do you maintain your current shape and
lifestyle?
JN: By doing the same things I did to take [the weight]
off: eating a clean and balanced diet and working out 5-6
days a week.
Max Sports: What advice would you give to other young
people who are looking to get into shape?
JN: Start today! If youre unsure about your goals or
how to achieve them, do some research online, consult a
dietitian or consult a doctor. There are plenty of avenues
for research these days.
Max Sports: What's the biggest lesson you've learned from
your weight-loss journey?
JN: You literally can do anything you put your mind to.

It was around this time last
year I really made up my mind to
not just lose weight, but to put
my heart into it and change my
life forever. No more excuses, just
hard work and discipline. Working
out was no longer a hobby or
something I would get around

second. From November 1, 2012
to January 12, 2013, I lost 19.6
pounds, 9.6 percent body fat and
7.5 inches off of my body. Seeing
the results of all my hard work
was motivating, and I knew it was
only the beginning. From there,
things just seemed to fall in to
place.

at times, but I had people who
believed in me and would do
anything to help keep me on track.
I drove my wife crazy making a
mess in the kitchen because I
was constantly meal prepping.
Every spare moment I had I was
in the gym, but she was still there

hand every step of the way. My
personal trainer, Alex Croteau, was
available and willing to work out
with me early in the morning and
late at night. There were times
Alex and I would work out at
midnight and be at the gym at 8
a.m. the next day.
Alex would always tell me An
excuse is an excuse, no matter
what. Find a way to make it
happen. Alex not only preached
no excuses but made it impossible
for me to make one. He made it
very clear through his generosity
of time and effort that he believed

What we wouldnt do for beauty. From the
beginning of time, women have gone to great
lengths to moisturize, exfoliate, condition and
rejuvenate their skin and hair in an effort to look
their best. In ancient days, natural remedies were
at times unsavory, such as dipping the hair in
camel urine to make it soft and shiny, or rubbing
crushed bugs on the lips to make them moist and
pleasingly red. Cleopatra, its said, used a paste
of crocodile dung and donkeys milk to keep her
skin looking lovely.
If the above natural beauty remedies leave you
feeling just a wee bit woozy, take heart. There are
many others to try that arent quite as off-putting,
won't cost you the triple digit hgure of a high-end
spa treatment or an online visit to Sephora and are
highly effective. And you need go no further than
your kitchen to hnd the ingredients.
The advantage to using kitchen ingredients? Its
simple, said Alexandra Catalano, certihed health
coach and founder of Eat Cute, a company devoted
to holistic nutrition and wellness. Whats going to
give you all the minerals, vitamins and enzymes of
a cucumber? An actual cucumber, she explained.
These foods have been used for thousands of years
to heal and nourish our bodies.
Going back to whats natural and organic is not
only one of the best ways to give your body what it
needs, said Alexandra, but, When you make these
remedies at home, you know exactly what youre
putting into them.
This is particularly important when you realize
that the long list of ingredients on the back of your
favorite lab-concocted cucumber eye cream often
includes chemicals that research is proving to be
carcinogenic, toxic to the reproductive system and
disruptive of hormones not to mention some that
are harmful to plants and wildlife.

YOGURT
With lactose enzymes and probiotics,
yogurt is the multi-duty workhorse of
your beauty regime. It deep cleans and
moisturizes the skin, helps to prevent
premature aging and relieves acne, skin

How to use: For best results, use cold,
plain, full-fat organic yogurt; Greek style
has the nicest texture. Use straight from
the tub to clean and invigorate your skin
by applying, allowing it to set for 10
minutes, then rinsing with warm water.

YOGURT/CITRUS CUTICLE TREATMENT
s One grapefruit
s Vitamin E or olive oil
s 1 cup full fat, plain yogurt
s 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Directions: Place yogurt in the freezer to get it
nice and chilled. Then cut grapefruit in half
horizontally so that its triangle sections are
exposed; remove any seeds. Apply a drop
of vitamin E or olive oil to each cuticle.
Then submerge your nails into the esh of
the grapefruit, one nger per section, for
two to three minutes.
Rinse your hands completely of grapefruit
juice. Cover one index nger with a small
cloth and use light pressure to push small
sections of the cuticle back on each nger
of one hand. Repeat with other hand.
Place nails in the yogurt for ve to 10
minutes then sprinkle with one teaspoon of
cinnamon. Rinse your hands in warm water.
LEMON
With its natural acidity, the lemon
is a natural astringent, making it an
excellent skin cleanser and toner. It also
works on skin discolorations and adds
luster to the hair.
How to use: Because of its acidity, lemon
juice should always be diluted. Use 2
tablespoons fresh lemon juice in 2 cups
of water as an anti-dandruff treatment,
or dilute cup lemon juice in cup
of water and apply to the hair, sitting in
the sun for 20 minutes, then rinsing out,

OATMEAL
Whole grain oatmeal is not only one of the healthiest
breakfast foods there is, but when used externally, it can
help to exfoliate, soften and soothe the skin. It relieves
minor irritations like itchiness or sunburn and can actually
help to heal acne.
How to use: Use rolled oats rather than quick cooking or
instant oatmeal. Cooked and cooled breakfast oats can
be applied to the face as an acne treatment; simply pat
on the affected areas, wait for 10 minutes and rinse
off. You can also try this honey oatmeal mask recipe
from Ole Henriksen, founder of OLEHENRIKSEN beauty

OLES DIY HONEY OATMEAL MASK
s 1 teaspoon plain yogurt
s 2 teaspoons honey

Directions: Create a smooth paste with the aforementioned
ingredients. Apply to clean skin. Leave on for 20-30

Naturally antibacterial and
anti-fungal, coconut oil is an
excellent skin moisturizer. Its
an ideal hair conditioner, too,
as it penetrates the hair better
than other oils. And it smells

How to use: Its best to use raw,

coconut oil. Use straight from
the jar for a hand moisturizer
or as a shaving cream. Or
apply a quarter-sized dollop
to the hair, cover with a
shower cap, and leave on

THE CONFUSING
ARENA of weight loss

Many people get caught up in the cycle of advancing age, getting


married, working a stressful job and having children, and all of this
leads to a subsequent reduction in their physical activities. Coupled
with some age related shifts in hormonal output and the result is a 20
or 30 pound weight gain. Trying to get back to those days when it
was so easy to stay lean feels impossible. Some people uncomfortably
drop some weight, but after losing 10 or 15 pounds, they get stuck
and eventually fall back to their previous weight, or even gain a few
more pounds. If this is you, you are not alone.
To compound their frustration, as they look around for some help,
they nd so many contradictory options, it is confusing at best. The
commercialization of how to lose body fat has made it very hard
for the average person to know what to do. The market has
created a myriad of quick xes that can make your head spin.
These options include taking hormones and eating only
500 calories per day, drinking watered down orange
juice, eliminating carbohydrates, eliminating all processed
food, eating whole grains, eating only organic, no dairy,
surgically shrinking the size of your stomach, taking pills
to melt away fat, eating clean, eating
only this type of food and not that.
Who wouldnt be confused?
MAKING SENSE
OF THE CONFUSION
Lets start by identifying what you
are trying to accomplish. Ultimately, if
you want to stay lean and healthy,
you want to adopt an eating style
that you can practice for the rest
of your life. With this approach,
you can start eliminating some of
the fads and options that may be
distracting you from making real
progress.
First, any weight loss strategy
that doesnt address what food and
calories you are consuming would be

10 Things To Consider When
Choosing a Weight Loss Plan
1. Dont starve yourself! It wont work long term.
2. A good target loss is 1.5 to 2 lbs. of body fat
loss per week. Losing weight faster than this
may cause muscle loss, hormonal changes and
eventually a plateau.
3. Dont eliminate food groups. Each food group
contains micronutrients that may not be as easy to
get when you eliminate that group.
4. There are no BAD foods unless they negatively
impact your overall health or goals.
5. Carbs are not the enemy; your body needs carbs
to produce energy and replace muscle glycogen.
6. Low fat diets may negatively impact your
ability to produce hormones, which can be
harmful to your health.
7. The plans that promise very fast losses are not
nutritionally sound and may cause more harm
than good.
8. Using fat burners can be helpful in the context
of a good nutrition and exercise strategy. Fat
burners alone probably wont do much for long-
term weight loss.
9. Ask what credentials the person has when
you rely on them to guide your weight loss.

10. If you choose a nutrition program that is
so restrictive you hate your life, you wont
maintain it. Find something that meets your goals
and lifestyle. Radical strategies are not necessary
to maintain a healthy weight for long-term health.
pills or shots without a sensible food strategy, elimination
diets and starvation cleanses wont help you long term and
might actually set you back even short term.
Second, there are strategies that sound legitimate on the
surface but they restrict your food choices so much that
they are also destined to be short-term hxes at best. Nany
gym advisors fall into this category. Maybe it is a trainer
you know and he/she has been involved in bodybuilding
or hgure contests in the past. With those credentials, their
good physique and their best intentions, they give you a
plan and a training strategy that helps you drop weight but
the very narrow food choices make it impossible to maintain.
Even if you could maintain it long term, you may be missing
essential nutrients because you are not getting a good
variety of foods. Short term, it causes minimal harm. Long
term, however, it isn't healthy. Eventually the restrictions are
very tough to maintain for the majority of people and they
fall back to their unhealthy weight with a renewed feeling of
failure and hopelessness.
Third, what about good food choices versus bad
foods?" What does that mean? Foods are not inherently
good or bad. Is ice cream bad? People may say you dont
need the sugar or fat, but ice cream is not bad per se
unless it has a negative impact on your overall health
or goals. Many people enjoy ice cream with no negative
consequences as well as many other supposedly bad
foods. Foods either: 1) move you closer to your goals, 2)
can be enjoyed in moderation with no health consequence,
or 3) may stop you from achieving your goals if you
overindulge. Individual food choices must be considered
in the context of an overall eating style and lifestyle to be
classihed as benehcial or not.
Fourth, unless you are morbidly obese and need to take
drastic action, it is almost always better to focus on a good
nutritional strategy without doing surgery, etc. People who
do opt for surgery still have to learn how to eat to maintain
good health. A nutrition plan that gives you a combination
of proteins, carbs and fats in sufhcient amounts to maintain
good health and stay lean is the best strategy.
Finally, the total calories you are consuming must be
considered when making a personalized nutrition plan.
Calculating resting metabolic rate as well as your exercise
calories, body weight, body fat percentage and daily
activity level are also key components when recommending
the calories required for you to meet your goals. If you
restrict your food intake too much your body will resist that
fast weight loss by eliminating muscle and slowing your
metabolism. Ultimately that will slow your progress and
make it even harder to achieve your goals. People who have
restricted their calories too much also feel low energy and
think it is just part of the weight loss process. Those people
can start losing body fat again by eating more food. This
phenomenon always amazes hard core dieters.

Runners who received supplementation of 2 grams
twice per day of L-carnitine for four weeks showed
a signihcant increase in enzymes involved in
energy production (cytochrome c reductase and

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a major health concern that is likely

This review summarizes the human

urinalysis. Advantra Z alone as well as

expenditure, and increases in weight loss
were observed when given for six to 12
weeks. This review demonstrates Advantra
Z (p-synephrine) is safe and effective for
