The year 2012 was a great year in
the development of my company, VIP Real
Estate in Colorado, but my workaholic
nature took its toll on my body and my
life. In December 2012, I weighed 232
pounds with full muscle atrophy from lack
of use. I was hung over, out of shape,
didnt t in my clothes, couldnt run, jump,
etc. And I HATED it. I was depressed
and miserable. I knew it was time for a
drastic change! I set my goal on January
2nd to do whatever it took to win Max
Muscle's MaxForm Life Challenge and
take the stage in my rst NPC show, the
Northern Colorado NPC on April 14th,
2013. Coming from so far behind, I was
undertaking the impossible.
To accomplish the impossible, I knew
I could leave no stone unturned. I had to
surround myself with the best of the best,
the cream of the crop, the most advanced
techniques and the greatest knowledge
base. I had to employ every advantage
and apply them with 110 percent effort.

Max Sports: You dropped more than 60 pounds and achieved
the strong, lean look that we all want. What was the secret to
your success?
AF: I believe my secret to success was my unwillingness
to fail. All of my friends and family kept saying how they
couldnt do it if they were me, but I actually found it easy
to stay on track once I decided that I wanted to win the
contest. Ive always been a competitive person, so I was in
competition with myself to be the best I could be.
Max Sports: How do you avoid the temptations of eating less-
than-healthy foods and skipping workouts?
AF: I allow myself to have treats once in awhile, but in
moderation. This way I dont feel deprived and am less
likely to binge. As for workouts, I do mine in the morning
before work. Its too easy to convince yourself youre too
tired after work [to hit the gym] or that you should hang
out with friends instead of working out.
Max Sports: Whats the biggest lesson youve learned from
this journey?
AF: Never give up and keep pushing forward, even if you
dont see results because they will come.

Max Sports: You had a long, prestigious career in the
NFL. What was the key to your success?
HW: As a child, I was timid, shy and overweight. It
wasnt until my involvement in sports during P.E. class
that ! gained enough self-conhdence to come out of
my shell. That really jump-started my career as an
athlete.

stopped playing professional football?
HW: When I stopped playing football I didnt stop
working out and staying ht. Exercise is part of my
lifestyle. ! am passionate about staying ht and active
and encouraging others to do the same. [Exercise|
helps me feel alert, productive, and it gives me energy
to stay focused throughout the day.
Max Sports: What advice would you give to someone
who is 40+ years old and looking to get back into shape?
HW: !t's never too late to change your life. [But it|
might mean you need to take certain precautions to
be sure you dont get injured.

Max Sports: The change in your physical appearance is
phenomenal. How did you do it?
MA: I think perseverance, determination and support
from my loving family and friends were the major keys
to my success.
Max Sports: What motivated you to change your life?
MA: One morning I woke up and decided I didnt want
to be overweight any longer. It happened just like that.
Max Sports: Are there any phrases or mantras that you
stick to in order to maintain your healthy lifestyle?
MA: Fail to plan, plan to fail. This phrase helps me
throughout competition season or when Im prepping
for htness photo shoots. Once you have a goal, it's
essential to hnd the path towards achieving it. But
walking this path requires planning. For example, twice
a week I cook and prep my foods for work. I also
schedule workouts throughout the week with friends
and optimize my sleep by planning on going to bed on
time. All of these little practices add up to a lot.

MA: A champion is someone who overcomes
challenges through perseverance. A true champion is
someone who helps others become champions.

Max Sports: What does it take to become the reigning IKF Light Middleweight
Kickboxing Champion?
SH: I think growing up with parents who demonstrated a strong work ethic
and always encouraged me to do my very best is what made me who I am. My
parents were self-employed and my brother was a two-time World Champion, so
simple character traits, such as perseverance and doing things right the hrst time,
were embedded in me as a young child. This is why Im a success in business
and in the ring.
Max Sports: Was kickboxing your foray into a healthy lifestyle?
SH: I have been in martial arts my entire life, so I have always been very active
and in pretty good condition. However, competing will take your conditioning to
a new level because everyone you go up against in the ring is in great condition
also. But kickbox training for htness is a great way to stay in shape without
having to worry about getting punched or kicked in the head.
Max Sports: What's the biggest lesson you've learned from your kickboxing journey?
SH: I have learned that the human mind is the most powerful thing in the world.
!t can push your physical body no matter how bad you are hurting. Both hghting
and business are 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical.
Max Sports: What is the dehnition of a true champion?
SH: Someone who sets BIG goals and has a burning desire inside to make them
happen, no matter what.

Max Sports: How were you able to achieve such an incredible
weight-loss transformation with the added stress of being
watched by a national television audience?
JN: There were several keys to success during my weight-
loss journey, including the fact that I was fortunate
enough to be on The Biggest Loser and had the help of
some fantastic trainers. But there were also several other
factors, like knowing my statistics and results using my
BodyMedia armband, having the support of my awesome
girlfriend and former cast mate Francy, and also knowing
it was time for me to make the change.
Max Sports: How do you maintain your current shape and
lifestyle?
JN: By doing the same things I did to take [the weight]
off: eating a clean and balanced diet and working out 5-6
days a week.
Max Sports: What advice would you give to other young
people who are looking to get into shape?
JN: Start today! If youre unsure about your goals or
how to achieve them, do some research online, consult a
dietitian or consult a doctor. There are plenty of avenues
for research these days.
Max Sports: What's the biggest lesson you've learned from
your weight-loss journey?
JN: You literally can do anything you put your mind to.
Max Sports: What is the dehnition of a true champion?
JN: Someone who sets their eyes on a goal, and hghts tooth
and nail to achieve that goal. And win or lose, as long as you
give it everything you had, that makes you a champion.
Max Sports: Are there any mantras that you repeat to yourself
in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
JN: If you always do what youve always done, youll always

It was around this time last
year I really made up my mind to
not just lose weight, but to put
my heart into it and change my
life forever. No more excuses, just
hard work and discipline. Working
out was no longer a hobby or
something I would get around

priority; everything else came
second. From November 1, 2012
to January 12, 2013, I lost 19.6
pounds, 9.6 percent body fat and
7.5 inches off of my body. Seeing
the results of all my hard work
was motivating, and I knew it was
only the beginning. From there,
things just seemed to fall in to
place.

at times, but I had people who
believed in me and would do
anything to help keep me on track.
I drove my wife crazy making a
mess in the kitchen because I
was constantly meal prepping.
Every spare moment I had I was
in the gym, but she was still there
cheering me on and holding my
hand every step of the way. My
personal trainer, Alex Croteau, was
available and willing to work out
with me early in the morning and
late at night. There were times
Alex and I would work out at
midnight and be at the gym at 8
a.m. the next day.
Alex would always tell me An
excuse is an excuse, no matter
what. Find a way to make it
happen. Alex not only preached
no excuses but made it impossible
for me to make one. He made it
very clear through his generosity
of time and effort that he believed
