PHILOSOPHY Teaches the rational discipline involved To know the truth (How to proceed thru rational inquiry)

RELIGION - Teaches the moral way of life for all (How each one ought to live)

Both offers a word-view (a system of thought) Both tries to explain the meaning of human existence (What matters most in life) Both involves THINKING in the Quest for Truth, but Emphasis is on REASON (logic) expressed thru Rational Theories Each theory has distinct features Theories have no absolute claims Involves the discernment of True Knowledge - Emphasis is on FAITH expressed thru teachings on Spirituality known as Dogma, Doctrines, Catechesis - Each religion has distinct features - Moral Teachings have absolute universal claim - Involves the discernment of Divine Wisdom (the revealed truths) added or injected into the knowledge of men as totality of Wisdom - Verified by Faith Experience - One has to experience first in order to under stand the logic of faith. Faith transcends the ethics created by men. Gods moral mandate precedes all other moral or rational duties (also known as the leap of faith) - Catholics acknowledges the autonomy of philosophy & science because of the nature of their disciplines. The Catholic religion also tries to demonstrate that faith & reason can harmoniously work together to better under stand & explain the ultimate reality (fides et ratio). As a result, theology today uses the tech niques of philosophical reasoning to explain Gods Gospel truths. Philosophy is simply an aid in the Proclamation of Gods

Verified by rational human experience Some armchair philosophers maintain that faith experience is irrational because they never bothered to try experiencing it. The connoisseur gives his evaluation after having tasted the wine. As a result, not a few notable philosophers have distinguished themselves either as rational atheists, radical existentialists, or as critical relativists, who rely solely on the Autonomy & Power of the Human Intellect to understand and explain the ultimate realty.

Such mental attitude smoothly paved the way for the advent of rational relativism and consumerism (materialism), which produced a global consciousness without a conscience that runs

the superficial world they created. Man no longer needs God.

revealed truths to the world. Philosophy is just one of the many ways available to know God better and love Him all the more.

The Root of Schism The Fallacy of Absolute Separation For the early Greeks, their mythology is their religion. And yet observe how their Greek Philosophers often resort to their own brand of polytheist religion to explain the complex human condition. And still observe how enthusiastic would-be philosophers today failed to notice the irony and the flaw in the logic behind their aversion for the God-Man named Jesus of Nazareth. The system wholeheartedly embraced the legends found in mythologies in support of their theories but simply closes its eyes on the philosophical treasures found in every religion or religious beliefs, just because their validation proceeds from a transcendental investigation of a human claim on the possible existence of a deity. They would rather drink from the font of Greek deities and demigods, and yet they are but clear contrivances of men. True philosophy entertains the possibilities of God! The intellectual arrogance among an elitist breed of thinkers who refuse to recognize, to distinguish and to fully explore the epistemological value and significance that is to be found in the natural human potential to transcend and discern spiritual realities is the root of this schism between faith and reason. Such natural potential, which in the past was roundly dismissed as ignorance and summarily classified as superstition, is actually inherent in every human cognitive faculty. This is why it has survived even to this very day. This potential to transcend is inherent in the very nature of man. In fact, this inherent potential was most evident in primitive societies prior to their direct mal-apprehension by Western ways of thinking. If indeed such potential to transcend and discern spiritual realities was a natural endowment attributable to an intelligent Primary Cause, then it was eventually meant to allow humans to know and understand this Supreme Absolute Being. The best philosophical minds, if so inclined, could transpose this recognition of spiritual realities in their own philosophical language and grammar if only to make this cognitive experience of spiritual realities sensible, persuasive and convincing, so that the whole world may benefit there from. Aware of the reverberating influence of their role as major change catalysts, philosophers are accountable to humanity for their theoretical proposals. Question: What do you think: did the seminary allowed you to study philosophy in order become atheists and advocates of violent struggles? Overheard Quotes: On Evil and Freedom: The selfish and immoral man knows no limits to freedom. On Love and Freedom: Love does not include controlling the other - Dont love me for what you intend or hope that I would be.
