THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

The United Arab Emirates has a long history, a history that extends well beyond the last 41 years. The UAE was a land of desert inhabited by proud and resourceful nomadic Bedouin tribes, fishing villages and date farms. The British came into conflict with the Qawasim tribal group. In the 1820s, the British fleet the Qawasim navy , imposed General Treaty of Peace on the nine Arab sheikhdoms, and established a garrison in the region. The area became known as the Trucial Coast until the creation the UAE in 1971

In the early 1960s, oil was discovered in Abu Dhabi, an event that led to quick unification calls made by UAE sheikdoms. Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966. The British had earlier started a development office that helped in some small developments in the emirates. The sheikhs of the emirates then decided to form a council to coordinate matters between them and took over the development

office.
They formed the Trucial States Council and appointed Adi Bitar, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum's legal advisor, as Secretary General and Legal Advisor to

the Council. The council was terminated once the United Arab Emirates was
formed.

THE RULER OF ABU DHABI

Overlooking the Persian Gulf, Dubai is an emirate in the northeastern region of the UAE. Dubai is soon becoming the tourist hub of the Middle East. Moving from the traditional oil industry, Dubai has now emerged as a major center for trade, commerce, finance, media, tourism, and fashion. Dubais philosophy is simple what has not been endowed must be constructed. Little wonder then, that Port Jebel Ali, one of the biggest in the Middle Eastern region is also the worlds largest manmade harbor.
