Menopause
help group Rescue attempt
trio are honoured
A NEW support group
for women going through
the menopause is to hold
its first meeting.
Leyland PAUSE will
meet each month on a
Tuesday evening, with
the first on September
16. Each month there will
be a guest speaker on
subjects such as nutri-
tion, homeopathy, mas-
sage and relaxation.
The meetings will run
from 6.30-8.30pm, at
Leyland United Re-
formed Church, Quin

A TRIO of brave Lancas-
trians are to be honoured
for attempting to save a
Penwortham man’s life.
Clive Robinson, 51, of Swallow
Avenue, died on New Year’s Eve
2007 after his kayak overturned
on the River Crake at Spark
Bridge in Ulverston, Cumbria.
His son Iain, 19, along with friends
Tony Morgan, 45, of Hacking Drive,
Longridge, and Martin Russell, 42,
of Park Road, Kirkham, battled to
rescue him from the strong currents.
The group are to be honoured with
a top bravery award by the Royal
Humane Society.
Iain repeatedly jumped into treach-
erous rapids to try to drag his father
out after Clive’s kayak overturned
and he was carried downstream be-
fore being pinned under-water
against rocks.
Clive was flown to Furness Gener-
al Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness but
he could not be resuscitated.
Iain’s mother Janet said of his hero-
ics: “It was a very brave thing for him
to do.
“I’m very proud of my son – I didn’t
know they had been put in for the
award.”

Royal Humane Society secretary
Dick Wilkinson, said: “This was an
horrific incident and these three
fought a brave life-and-death battle
in a bid to save Mr Robinson.
“Tragically he died but they did
their very best and richly deserve the
awards they are to receive.”
Speaking to the Evening Post just
days after the tragic accident, Iain
said: “He was a voluntary kayak in-
structor and he must have loved
doing it – he would drop anything to
help somebody else.
“He did not mind helping other
people and he was always smiling –
he was a kind and gentle man.”

The tip user, who asked
not to be named, found
the files in the cardboard
recycling bin at the cen-
tre.
He said: “I was putting
a bag of rubbish in the
skip and ended up finding
this report. I just lifted up
a couple of files – there
was a pile of them. It’s
clear they are not meant
to be seen by Joe Public.”
As well as statements
by police officers, the doc-
uments include details of
surveillance on suspects
at locations such as
Bournemouth Airport
and Liverpool John
Lennon Airport, accounts
of arrests and raids, alle-
gations surrounding the
doping of racing pigeons
and a list of 707 exhibits
used in the court case.
These include various
photographs, video
footage, passport details,
mobile phones – includ-
ing one mobile number –
address books, cocaine,
cars and thousands of
pounds in cash.
Simon Davies, director
of Privacy International,
said: “This incident is a
monstrous assault on pri-
vacy and a monstrous as-
sault on trust.
“Whoever was respon-
sible should be dealt with
publicly to restore trust.”
South Ribble MP
David Borrow said: “It
disturbs me and I would
be interested to see the re-
sult of an investigation if
the procedure was wrong.
“The bottom line is if
there are papers that give
a large amount of person-
al information and al-
leged offences, there
should be rules in place
that they are shredded.”
Peter McNaught, dis-
trict prosecutor for Pre-
ston Crime Prosecution
Service, said: “When we
prepare such papers we
are obliged to provide a
copy to barristers, the de-
fendant’s solicitors, the
court, and numerous
other parties.
“All case materials
stored by the CPS are
kept for a specified length
of time depending on the
type of case and then se-
curely destroyed. “We
employ an outside com-
pany to take away the
documents securely and
dispose of them.”
