PAI MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE, MANIPAL MANAGEMENT COMMUNICATION Programme: PGDM-HC Batch: 2011-2013 Term: 1 Course ID: MNCN Credits: 3 Course Instructors: Prof. Jaba Mukherjee Gupta & Prof. Vidya Pratap Introduction: The course Management Communication will focus on developing skills, learning concepts and evolving a clear, distinct independent voice. This is essential for the manager who wishes to stand out and be noticed as a leader. The teaching-learning methods will include case discussion sessions followed by written analysis assignments, role plays, oral presentations based on the current business environment, etc. The purpose will be to help students to identify their strengths and weaknesses as a communicator; develop the strengths and work on areas of improvement. The emphasis in this module will be on developing and improving oral and written communication skills through case studies and in-class activities. Programme Learning Goals: This course partially fulfills the second learning goal Demonstration of understanding of effective integration and co-ordination of all functional areas and resultant impact on performance by focusing on the role of communication Course Objectives:

Formulate an effective communication strategy for a message Listen for understanding and give constructive feedback Speak and write clearly, concisely, and convincingly Create impressive formal presentations that are delivered with confidence and poise Knowledge Objectives: At the end of the module the students should know 1. 2. 3. 4. Skill Objectives: To learn and practice the art of effective professional communication At the end of the module the students should be in the process of becoming significantly better and more conscious communicators than they were on the first day of class. Specific skill areas:

Developing better spoken and written English skills Developing good listening skills Giving constructive feedback (without being hurtful or judgmental) Communicating a message clearly using appropriate language Attitude Objectives: Developing a positive attitude in order to become a better communicator Empathizing with the receiver while sending out a message Being open to receiving feedback from peers and faculty members Being culturally sensitive in situations that involve multi-cultural interactions Course Content: Topics covered in the module fall into three categories: 1. Communication concepts: communication strategy, listening and feedback, assertiveness, nonverbal communication, managing conflicts and persuasion 2. Every Reading assignment will be used for class discussion/activity in the next session: be prepared. You will be assessed largely on the learning you have attempted.

Written assignments: 1. Format the page using the 1.5 space command and leave a one-inch margin on all sides. 2. Times New Roman font size 12 and left alignment for general assignments. 1. Bold and Centre commands for Main headings; flush left and bold for subheadings ; italics for sub-sub-headings. 2. Number your points appropriately; e.g. 1st level: 1; 2nd level: 1.1.; 3rd level: 1.1.1, etc. Ensure correctness of language and aesthetic appeal. Participate actively in class.
