opened their new facility in Cheboygan.
Featuring a huge inventory of previously-
owned cars, trucks and SUVs, Rivertown
Auto Group specializes in making financ-
ing easy, regardless of the purchasers
credit history.
Jim Wright states that the companys
slogan, Nobody Sells for Less and

mer Petoskey location. We offer financ-
ing for customers at all levels and that

starting as low as 3.9 percent. We have
guaranteed credit approval for our cus-

He adds, We have a large inventory of
pre-owned vehicles, typically around 100

before the sale.

Mark those calendars; the 2013 Wings over
Gaylord airshow is set to soar once again this
year on Fathers Day weekend, June 15th and
16th, and this years event looks to bring
even more thrills than ever before both on
the ground and in the skies over Gaylord
Regional Airport.
Gaylord Regional Airport Director, Matt
Barresi, states, The performers we have
lined up are all top-notch actswe have a
great line-up for this years show. Like annu-
al events such as Alpenfest and Alpenfrost,
Wings over Gaylord is yet another reason for
people to discover all that Gaylord has to
offer. But it is also for the people who live
here in Northern Michigan as it provides an
affordable, family-oriented and thrilling
event right here in our own community.
Barresi notes that attendance at past
Wings over Gaylord airshows has been about
evenly split between the
number of attendees from
inside and outside a hun-
dred mile radius of Gaylord.
He also notes attendance
has been growing every year,
reaching nearly 7,000 people
in 2012.
He emphasizes, It is
important that people real-
ize that this is not a for-prof-
it event for the airport. It is a
community celebration
event and one of only six air-
shows scheduled in
Michigan this year. Gaylord
is a vital, growing communi-
ty, and Wings over Gaylord
not only attracts new people
to experience our city, it is
wonderful Fathers Day event
for the people in this area to
enjoy.
The Gaylord Regional
Airport is a tremendous avia-
tion resource. It conducts an
impressive amount business
for the area, including over
200,000 packages processed
through commercial ship-
pers such as FedEx and UPS.
It is home to air charter
operations, maintenance
facilities, aircraft rentals and flight instruc-
tion. The airport is a vital component in the
communitys emergency medical needs, with
air ambulance service available 24 hours a
day, seven days a week. The terminal offers
three conference rooms and provides cour-
tesy and rental cars, an office area, a lounge
and a bunkroom for traveling pilots and
crews.
The annual Wings Over Gaylord airshow
not only provides a spectacular Fathers Day
weekend event for area residents and visi-
tors, it offers a chance for people to view the
airport facility up close.
Now about this years upcoming show.
Among the highlights will be jet perform-
ance teams both in the air an on the ground
(there is a jet-powered school bus coming
that I cant wait to see), the Canadian
Skyhawks Military Skydiving Team will be
returning, there will be helicopter rides
available for attendees, a military vehicle
parade through downtown Gaylord with
vehicles on display during the show and
much, much more. The very popular Big
Band hanger dance party will return and
there will also be a Luau Night on Saturday.
Wings Over Gaylord keeps growing each
year, relates Barresi. We are grateful to the
many sponsors who make this event possi-
ble each year, and welcome new sponsors
who would like to become of part of this
exciting annual event.

upcoming Wings over Gaylord airshow,

Conveniently located near the corner of US 131 and M-75
in Boyne Falls - Boyne Village Market (and Nicos Pizza &
Grinders) offers just about anything area shoppers need or
desire; from everyday items to the wonderfully unique.
Frank Saco, who manages the store, relates, We are really
two stores in one, with the wide variety of food, beverage,
deli, household and even sporting good items at Boyne
Village Market, and the delicious Nicos Pizza & Grinders
shop with items that are made using our own family recipe.
Our goal is to offer just about anything area shoppers are
looking for, including unique items not found in bigger
stores. People who walk into our store for the first time
almost always look around and say Wow!
Of course, Boyne Village Market shoppers will find tradi-
tional selections such as milk, bread, pop, beer and other
convenience items. But they will also discover a huge selec-
tion of wines and liquors, cigars, a fabulous deli with a vari-
ety of Russian, middle eastern and Italian meats, salads and
sandwiches and more.
In every department, notes Saco, we try to include
something different that shoppers would not typically
expect to find. We even marinate our own olives, and create
our own humus, potato salads and sandwiches. We have
established a connection with local farmers and try to sup-
port local first. Starting the last week of April, we will have
an Outdoor Garden Center at this location featuring flowers,
plants, topsoil, mulch and more.
Boyne Village Market is owned by Franks brother Mark
Saco, who also owns several other stores in Michigan
including shops in Kalkaska and East Jordan. Nicos Pizza is
named after Marks son, and features a unique family recipe.
Frank recalls, My brother worked on that recipe for a
long time until he got it right. We use only fresh ingredients.
The flavor is really, really good and pricing is very competi-
tive. Just about everything is made from scratch.
He adds, We are a family market. We employ 15 people
here and work hard to support our local clients as much as
possible through the variety of products we offer. Our goal is
to offer personalized interaction with our customers, have
great quality, offer local farmers market goods in season,
and have a large variety of items for our customers conven-
ience.
Boyne Village Market and Nicos Pizza & Grinders is locate
at 2055 US 131, just north of M-75 in Boyne Falls. The
Market can be reached at (231) 549-2950 and Nicos at (231)

competitions at the Civic Center will take place
from 11 am to 4 pm, and will feature three com-
petitive categories: College and University;
Professional Center-of-the-Plate; and Michigan
Desserts. Teams will prepare an entre paired with
a Michigan wine and micro-brew. Teams will be
judged by both the attendees who award the
"People's Choice Award" and a select panel of
judges who determine the "Chop Challenge" com-
petitors.
The Chop Challenge, will feature the top four
teams selected by the judges from the Taste of
Michigan competition, and it will take place on
Saturday from 2:30 to 4 pm. The top team will walk
away with the highly coveted Taste of Michigan
award. Be sure to save some room, as the Dessert
Challenge will take place from 4:30 to 6 pm.
The Annual Chefs Challenge event is designed
to raise both funds and awareness for Challenge
Mountain a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization
providing adaptive outdoor recreational opportu-
nities, free of charge, to people with special needs
and their families. For more than 25 years,
Challenge Mountain has been dedicated to pro-
viding a venue for sports, outdoor recreation, and
leisure skills to those with physical disabilities or
mental challenges.
Of course, Chefs Challenge also showcases
Michigan food and drink products and their cre-
ative applications in a meal. It is an excellent
opportunity for Michigan establishments to show-
case their talents and gain valuable exposure while
raising funds for Challenge Mountain.
Tasting tickets for the Friday, April 12th event
are available for $10. Tickets for Saturday are
available for $30 and include all Seminars and 8
tasting tickets for Taste of Michigan and "Chop
Challenge. Additional Taste of Michigan tickets
are available at four for $15 and eight for $25.
Tickets for the Dessert Challenge are $5, and a
cash bar will be available. To purchase
tickets, and for a complete seminar
schedule and list of this years partici-
pants, visit www.chefs-challenge.com.

With approximately 4,000 square feet of
fully stocked resale space, and new inventory
arriving daily, customers can shop for just
about anything starting with any letter in the
alphabet at A-2-Z Resale in Gaylord.
Founded by Bill and Carol Brown in May
of 2008, A-2-Z Resale has grown to encom-
pass just about any resale item shoppers
could be looking for, including appliances,
furniture, racks and racks of clothing items,
tools, home dcor items, kitchen items, tow-
els, bedding, curtains, dishes, nick knacks,
collectable figurines and spoons, candles,
holiday dcor items, luggage, golf clubs, tele-
visions, DVDs and VHS tapes, CDs, vinyl
records, puzzles, books, games, toys, base-
ball cards, and moreeven a special area
devoted to wedding dresses.
Astonishingly, A-2-Z has over 50 wedding
dresses and over 50 prom dress on hand,
plus over 4,000 pieces of jewelry, lots of but-
tons, purses, shoes, boots, sandals and 20
racks full of all types of clothing for men,
women, childreneven maternity and baby
clothes. There has never been a more eco-
nomical and stylish way to update your
wardrobe or get decked-out for that upcom-
ing special occasion.
We have just about everything here but
food, observes Bill Brown. We locate items
for our inventory from garage and estate
sales, abandoned storage units, donations
and more. We never know what we will have
next, it changes every day.
Carol Brown adds, Many of the items that
we offer, especially furniture, move very
quickly. We would love to thank everyone
who has stopped in and for being our cus-
tomers for five years now. We would also
enjoy seeing our friends from Onaway,
Millersburg and Harrisville areas stop in and
see us.
One thing is certain, on any given day
there are plenty of items representing every
letter in the alphabet at A-2-Z Resale.
Convenient parking in front of the store
makes it easy for shoppers to stop in on a
regular basis to check out the latest invento-
ry.
A-2-Z Resale is located at 1829 Old 27
South (S. Otsego Avenue) in Gaylord. The
store is open from 9 am to 6 pm, seven days
a week all year long with the exception of
holidays. For additional information call

The 1st Annual Northern Michigan
Women's Expo will be held at the
Gaylord High School gymnasium on
April 27th from 10 am to 4 pm. The
Expo is free to attend, and will offer
over 50 area vendors featuring a just
for women selection of services, prod-
ucts and seminars throughout the day.
Event organizer, Sherice Esson states,
The Expo combines shopping, beauty,
wellness, health, fitness, home, food,
entertainment and more - just for
women. We are presenting all the
things women love and need and put-
ting them into one amazing event.
In addition to perusing over 50
women-related products and services,
attendees will also have the opportuni-
ty to visit a stage area featuring demon-
strations, entertainment and guest
speakers throughout the day. Each
attendee will be given a key to try to
open our treasure chest, which has over
$500 in prizes inside.
While an incredible variety of prod-
uct and service providers are already
lined-up for the event, Esson points out
that there is still time for area business-
es to be a part of the Expo. She notes
that the booth space for exhibitors is
extremely affordable, and the event will
provide a unique face-to-face market-
ing opportunity to potentially meet
hundreds of ready-to buy consumers.
This annual, one-of-a-kind event
offers businesses the opportunity to
promote services, sell products, book
appointments and consultations, grow
their clientele, and build brand aware-
ness.
Vendor spaces are 10 foot by 10 foot
and are available for $40. Those inter-
ested in becoming part of the 1st
Annual Northern Michigan Women's
Expo can contact Sherice at (989) 858-

a list of participating vendors can be

Life is full of ups and downs and
the financial markets are no different.
As an investor, youre no doubt happy to
see the ups but the downs can
seem like a real downer. Isnt there any
way to help smooth out the volatility in
your investment portfolio?
First of all, to cope with volatility, its
helpful to know what causes it and
there can be many causes. Computers
that make trades in milliseconds, based
on mathematical models, are some-
times blamed for intraday volatility, but
large price swings can also occur follow-
ing the release of government economic
reports, such as those dealing with
unemployment and housing starts.
Global events, such as the European
economic malaise, can also send the
financial markets into a tizzy.
By being aware of the impact of these
events, you can see that the workings of
the markets especially their volatility
may not be as mysterious as you
thought. Still, while knowing the causes
of volatility can help you prepare for
market swings, it wont blunt their
impact on your portfolio. To do that, you
need to create a diversified mix of
investments because your portfolio can
be more susceptible to negative price
movements if you only own one type of
asset.
To illustrate: If you owned mostly
bonds, and interest rates rose sharply,
the value of your bonds would likely
drop, and your portfolio could take a big
hit. But if you owned stocks, bonds, gov-
ernment securities, certificates of
deposit (CDs) and other investment
vehicles, the rise in interest rates would
probably affect your portfolio less sig-
nificantly.
Unfortunately, many investors think
that if they own a
few stocks and a
bond, theyre
diversified. But
you can actually
extend your diver-
sification through
many levels and
you should. For
the equity portion
of your portfolio,
try to own stocks
r e p r e s e n t i n g
many market sec-
tors and indus-
tries. Also, consid-
er international
stocks. And rather
than just owning
U.S. Treasury
bonds, consider
corporate bonds
and municipal
bonds, and diver-
sify your fixed-
income holdings
further by pur-
chasing short-
term, intermedi-
ate-term and
long-term bonds. Work with your finan-
cial advisor to determine the mix of
asset classes and investments that are
appropriate for your financial goals and
objectives.
How you ultimately diversify your
portfolio depends on your risk toler-
ance, time horizon and long-term goals
theres no one correct asset mix for
everyone. And over time, your diversifi-
cation needs may change. To cite one
example, as you enter your retirement
years, you may need to increase your
percentage of income-producing
investments while possibly reducing the
amount of growth investments you own.
These growth-oriented investments
tend to be more volatile, and you may
want less volatility during your retire-
ment. However, even during retirement,
you will need to own a certain percent-
age of growth investments to provide
you with the growth potential youll
need to stay ahead of inflation.
Keep in mind that diversification cant
guarantee a profit or protect against
loss. Nonetheless, building a diversified
portfolio may help take some of the
volatility out of investing so look for
diversification opportunities whenever
possible.

By Deb Hagen-Foley
Charmayne thought her son was different
from other children his age when he was
only fifteen months old. The timing of her
pregnancy and delivery was nearly identical
to two other women who belonged to her
church. Although Tyler was her first child,
her friends children gave her a convenient
way to know what normal developmental
milestones to expect. Her mothers intu-
ition told her something was wrong,
although she couldnt explain exactly what
was wrong.
When he was two years old he had fre-
quent ear infections. A series of doctor visits
took them to a speech pathologist who
advised Tyler be evaluated for a learning dis-
ability. This was the first time an expert
confirmed what Charmayne suspected her
son wasnt developing normally. The obser-
vation confirmed what she didnt want to
believe and told her she wasnt crazy in her
beliefs about Tyler. Those thoughts moved
closer to reality when her sister-in-law, a
special education teacher, suggested he
might have autism.
When the diagnosis came, she felt as
though they had been pushed in a black
hole. Richard, Charmaynes husband,
recalls how they were told that Autism was a
new label they had been given, but that Tyler
wasnt changed by the diagnosis.
April is Autism Awareness month. Autism
is a disorder that impairs a persons ability to
communicate and relate to others. It is four
times more common in boys than girls.
Autism occurs more frequently than pedi-
atric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined.
Just last month, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) revised esti-
mates of the prevalence of autism to 1 in 88
persons. This represents at ten-fold increase
in prevalence in the past 10 years. It occurs
in all racial, ethnic, and social groups.
Research in the past five years is providing
new answers to the question of what causes
autism. Autism appears to be the result of
both genetic factors and environmental fac-
tors influencing early brain development.
Autism is of various levels of severity, rang-
ing from 1 (mild) to 10 (very severe). Tylers
diagnosis was three to four on the spectrum,
of mild to moderate severity.
Early diagnosis and treatment of autism is
being recognized as important to the success
of managing the disorder. Intensive behav-
ioral intervention has improved learning,
communication and social skills in young
children with autism. These behavioral pro-
grams provide a structured, therapeutic
environment and focus on the core areas
affective by autism: social skills, language
and communication, imitation, play skills,
daily living and motor skills.
Autism is associated with rigid routines
and repetitive behaviors, obsessively arrang-
ing objects or following specific routines.
Tyler is has very rigid eating requirements.
Some people have had success in treating
autism with specialized diets. Charmayne
wont try that approach. Tyler will eat chick-
en nuggets, chicken strips, French fries and
cheese pizza. He loves bread and sweets.
Recently, he has accepted peanut butter and
jelly sandwiches, making school lunches
much easier. For years, Tyler has carried
frozen chicken nuggets to school and the
school workers fix them for him.
Charmayne remembers the last meal he
ate that differed from Tylers eating regimen.
The meal was fried deer steak and mashed
potatoes. He was 18 months old. When he
was younger, he also ate glue and plastic,
including chewing his plastic toys. His
restricted behaviors toward food go beyond
dislike of different tastes, but reflect his need
for sameness. Charmayne discovered that
he finds green beans so offensive that she
sometimes produces a can when he is mis-
behaving. He is quick to change his behav-
ior so that she will return the can to the cup-
board.
Tyler has acquaintances rather than
friends. However, once he has made an
acquaintance in a location he visits regularly,
he seeks out those individuals in those loca-
tions in the future. Charmayne and Richard
describe him as a joy to have around. He is
highly functioning and lovable, and they
worry someone might take advantage of his
generally pleasant nature. He will, however,
react immediately and strongly when
touched the wrong way or by the wrong per-
son.
Charmayne would like people to know
that autism is a disability of social and com-
munication skills. They continue to work
with Tyler to improve his ability to respond
appropriately in social situations. They ask
people to be understanding of the occasion-
al socially unacceptable behaviors that
sometimes occur.
Tyler is fascinated by long broom skirts
and likes to watch them move. His fascina-
tion took over when he reached out to a
woman wearing such a skirt in a store a cou-
ple years ago. The woman reacted very
strongly, seeing his behavior as threatening
rather than curious.
Her advice for parents of children with
autism is to do research on the internet, find
a support group if available. If they cant
find a local support group, online autism
message boards are another option.
Websites such as Autism Speaks
(www.autismspeaks.org) and Autism Society
of Michigan (www.autism-mi.org) provide
resources and information for persons seek-
ing to understand an autism diagnosis.

The Purity Ring Drama
Group, whose purpose is to
help home school students
honor God through the the-
atre arts, performed The Play
Called Noahs Flood at the
Crooked Tree Arts Center in
Petoskey. The play was written
by Suzan Zeder, a University of
Texas at Austin fine arts pro-
fessor.
The play-within-a-play,
which was directed by Mickey
Walker, is a medieval comedy
about how the residents of the
make-believe town of
Frodsham overcome obstacles
to stage Noahs Flood as an
audition before a pageant
master.
The quirky and endearing
cast of characters included a
longsuffering blacksmith
named Jon Talbot, his spirited
wife, Petula, their rebellious
son, Ira, and the seven deadly
sins (e.g. greed, sloth, glut-
tony). Ben Ruthig, the 18-year-
old who played Talbot (and
Noah), said of his role, It was
a lot of fun, but it was also a
lot of memorization.
The play featured music in
the form of a minstrel group
with flute, mandolin, and
drum. Petoskey pastor John
Alexandrowski, of Word of Life
Community Church, wel-
comed the audience and
offered a prayer before the performance.
Maranda Ginop, the plays lighting assistant, said that
about forty youth, ages 4 to 18, participated as actors and
actresses in the production. Julie Peurasaari, the producer
and artistic director, said the cast resides all over the north-
ern lower peninsula from Cheboygan to Charlevoix to
Gaylord to Onaway. Seventeen-year-old Amanda
Derengowski, who gave the curtain speech, said that the all-
volunteer production cost about $6000.
Judging from the overwhelmingly positive reaction from
the audience (following the Sunday afternoon, 4/7 perform-
ance), it was clear that, as Director Walker put it, the young
cast did a fantastic job.
The 2013 production was the tenth anniversary for the
Purity Ring Drama players. In keeping with the mission of
the group to showcase plays, as Peurasaari noted, that are
delightful, historical, and female-led, past productions
have included Blackbird Pond and Caddie Woodlawn.
Besides producing high-quality theatrical performances,
the Purity Ring Drama Group also offers Purity Ring Girls.
PRG is a parent-led support group comprised of northern
Michigan home schooled gals, ages 12 to 19, who meet for
cultural enrichment and outdoor activities from May
through October. The young ladies also agree to eschew
romantic dating-style relationships in favor of more family-
oriented socialization. This serious moral commitment - to
remain sexually and emotionally pure until marriage - is
sometimes signified by the
wearing of a silver ring. The
inspiration to guard your
heart comes from the Bible
verse of Proverbs 4:23.

All kids are terrific and here at North Ohio Elementary we are acknowledging kids
for good character. The Kiwanis club of Otsego County is helping us with this
endeavor. Students who exhibit good behavior by following our school rules will be
recognized by staff for doing so. One student per class will be selected to receive a
Terrific Kid award, button, and pencil. The student names will be announced on
our morning announcements. They will also have their picture taken to hang on
our Terrific Kid bulletin board. This is an excellent opportunity for staff, students,
parents and the community to connect on a social/emotional level because good
character is just as important as good grades!

THURSDAY: John 14:26-29 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father
will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. 27
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be
troubled, nor let it be fearful. 28 You heard that I said to you, I go away, and I will come to you. If you loved
Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 Now I have told you
before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe.
FRIDAY: Mark 16:14-18 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 14 Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they
were reclining at the table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had
not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, Go into all the world and
preach the gospel to all creation. 16 He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has
disbelieved shall be condemned. 17 These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will
cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly
poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.
SATURDAY: 1 Thessalonians 5:18-22 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 18 in everything give thanks; for this is Gods
will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit; 20 do not despise prophetic utterances. 21 But examine
everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil.
SUNDAY: Hebrews 12:1-3 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 12 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses
surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run
with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who
for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the
throne of God.3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not
grow weary and lose heart.
MONDAY: Acts 2:1-4 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 2 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together
in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole
house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they
rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues,
as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
TUESDAY: Acts 2:16-18 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:
17 And it shall be in the last days, God says, That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons
and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream
dreams; 18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I
will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall
prophesy.
WEDNESDAY: 1 Corinthians 14:37-40 New American Standard
Bible (NASB) 37 If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual,
let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the
Lords commandment. 38 But if anyone does not recognize
this, he is not recognized. 39 Therefore, my brethren, desire
earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues.
40 But all things must be done properly and in an orderly
manner.

Praise God ! We have just celebrated the Easter story across the
world. We celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas and we celebrate
his death, burial and resurrection at Easter. Now what?
Many people ask the same question. What did the believers do after
Jesus rose from the dead?
In Acts 1:4-6
4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them
not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the
Father, which, He said, you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly
baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not
many days from now. 6 Therefore, when they had come together,
they asked Him, saying, Lord, will You at this time restore the king-
dom to Israel?
Wait for the promise! For 50 days from the day of his resurrection
they waited and prayed. They did not know what they were waiting
for, only that Jesus said to wait and it must be something good.
As promised a sound like a mighty rushing wind began to fill the
room and it seemed like tongues of fire was dancing on top of their
heads and they were baptized in the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
other tongues.
As we continue to celebrate Easter, let us be like those who waited
and prayed. The day of Pentecost will be May 19, 2013. Join with me
as we seek the presence of the Holy Spirit. We need super natural
power from on high to do the work that is before us. Dont think for
one moment that the enemy doesn't know his time of control is short.
Drop me an email or letter about your prayer request, I promise to
prayer in agreement with you.

At the onset of the Otsego County United
Ways Day of Caring community projects
event this past September, Board President
Thomas Mammoser observed to the gather-
ing of volunteers that This is not your
grandfathers United Way, encapsulating the
organizations goal of addressing the needs
of the community today in order to create a
better community future. That emphasis is
built around three primary areas; education,
income and health, and tailored to the needs
of the community through input from com-
munity leaders, localized research data, and
citizen input. Recent studies utilized by the
organization include the Otsego County
Quality of Life Assessment, Health
Assessment, Kids Count and Census Data.
Otsego County United Way executive
director, Lorraine Manary states, People
remember when the United Way was strictly
the funding source for agencies providing
our social safety net. But the Otsego County
United Way does more than fund programs;
we work closely with community leaders to
identify areas of impact, by looking for those
places where we can come together and
make a difference now to better everyones
future in the community.
At their Annual Recognition Breakfast
event held at Wisconsin Street Hall on March
27th, the 2013 United Way partner agencies
and funded programs were announced. This
year, $96,676 will be allocate by the Otsego
County United Way as a community invest-
ment, funding that is primarily made possi-
ble through donations received from busi-
nesses and individuals in their annual
Campaign fundraiser, which was chaired by
Joe Wambold in 2012.
The 2013 United Way partner agencies and
funded programs will be:
- Catholic Human Services; Counseling
Services
- Child Welfare Alliance; Educational and
Health Services
- Community Mediation Services
- First Call For Help; Housing Support
- Friendship Housing Center; Housing
Support
- Otsego County Judicial System;
Alternative Education Support Program
- Otsego County Food Pantry
- Volunteer Center; Lunch Buddies
Program and Road to Recovery Cancer
Patient Support Program
- The Salvation Army; Housing/Rental
Assistance
- Womens Resource Center of Northern
Michigan; Domestic Abuse & Sexual Assault
Programs
Manary states, The United Way continues
to be involved at the community level, work-
ing on joint projects that are aimed at
addressing education, income and health
that are specific to the Board-developed
goals.
At the breakfast meeting, new
Board members were introduced,
which are John Makranyi of
Raymond James & Associates and
Susan Hellenberg of B.J.s Restaurant
and Catering. A transition is also in
progress from outgoing Board presi-
dent, Thomas Mammoser to incom-
ing Board president Barb Switalski.
Manary highlighted that a new
Literacy League is in development.
It is designed to address literacy
in early grade levels, she explains.
We are working with representatives
from the library, education, day care
facilitiesanyone working with area
youth to determine where they can
best utilize volunteers to assist in the
area of literacy. Our plans are to start
the literacy league by this summer
and to have as many as 75 volunteers
on our team.
Manary notes that she is already in
the process of putting together a cam-
paign committee to raise funds for 2014
allocations, and that committee will
begin working this summer. She encourages
local individuals who would be interested in
joining the committee to give her a call.
The focus of the United Way is on com-
munity impact, she affirms. We encourage
individuals and businesses to get involved,
which they can do in so many ways. That
may be through financial donations, through
volunteerism or through advocating. It can
be as simple as donating five dollars, giving
five hours of time, or telling five friends
about the work the United Way is doing in
this community.

Choosing a locally owned store
generates almost four times as
much economic benefit for the
surrounding region as shopping at
a chain, a new study has conclud-
ed. The analysis also found that
eating at a local restaurant pro-
duces more than twice the local
economic impact of dining at a
chain restaurant.
The research firm Civic
Economics analyzed data from fif-
teen independent retailers and
seven independent restaurants, all
located in Salt Lake City, and com-
pared their impact on the local
economy with four chain retail
stores (Barnes & Noble, Home
Depot, Office Max, and Target) and
three national restaurant chains
(Darden, McDonalds, and P.F.
Changs).
The study found that the local
retailers return an average of 52
percent of their revenue to the
local economy, compared with just
14 percent for the chain retailers.
Similarly, the local restaurants re-
circulate an average of 79 percent
of their revenue locally, compared
to 30 percent for the chain eateries.
What accounts for the difference?
Independent businesses spend
much more on local labor. They
also procure more goods for resale
locally and rely much more heavily
on local providers for services like
accounting and printing. This
means that much of the money a
customer spends at a local store or
restaurant is re-spent within the
local economy, supporting other
businesses and jobs.

New stories updated daily on-line at www.weeklychoice.com
Article submitted by Bev Cherwinski
April is here again and it is also Organ and
Tissue Awareness month. Last week mem-
bers of the Organ Transplant Support Group
of Northern Michigan spoke to the Otsego
Memorial Hospital Auxiliary members on
that subject.
Fernando Sauro a liver recipient of 10
years and Bev Cherwinski a single lung
recipient now 14 year after her life saving
transplant. Both spoke of their disease and
experiences as organ recipients and what
their transplant means to them. Nancy
Ragan R.N. also joined with the story of her
husband Ken and of his sister who was an
organ donor. Years later he himself gave his
kidney to save the life of his wife Nancys'
friend.
"It is always nice to get out into the public
and tell our stories as organ recipients, he
stated. It helps to have a face to face talk
with a recipient and realize that without the
transplant most would not be here to enjoy
their families and live a normal life".
You don't have to wait to sign up on the
Michigan Registry to be a donor. You can get
on the internet to "giftoflifemichigan.org" or
call 800-482-4881 or go directly to your local
Secretary of state office and the clerk will
sign you up right then.
Michigan liscense plates are now available
having the " DONATE LIFE" logo on
it along with a personal message
(Cherwinskis displays 1 LUNG). The cost is
$35 in addition to the price of your original
plate. For $5 extra you can have two plates
made.
Remember there is no age limit to be a
donor. Minors may register to be a donor
with or without parental consent, but their
parents have final say on whether a donation
will actually be carried out until the youth
turns 18 years of age. There is no cost to the
donor or their families.
We ask you to consider being an organ and
tissue donor. If the answer is yes, make cer-
tain you tell your family, your doctor and
your friends of your decision. Right now in
Michigan there are 3,100 persons on the
waiting list for their life-saving organ, and
over 100,000 in the United States.

Charlevoix - The Great Lakes Chamber
Orchestra Sunday Series will present a cham-
ber music concert entitled "Brass-mania" at
the First Congregational Church of
Charlevoix on Sunday, April 14 at 4 p.m.
GLCO orchestra members Vern Campbell,
trumpet, Beverly Isenbarger, horn, and
Edward R. Bahr, trombone, will be joined by
members of the Castle Brass Quintet in a
program featuring duos, trios, and quintets.
The GLCO trio will perform Poulenc's
Sonata (1922) and a Suite of Wisconsin Folk
Music arranged by Conrad DeJong. Included
in the suite are the "Lumberman Dance
Tune" and the "Pig Schottische."
The Castle Quintet will play
Franckenpohl's Brass Quintet and Robert
Nagel's "This Old Man" March. Members of
the quintet are Ev Wujcik and David Pugh,
trumpets; Beverly Isenbarger, horn; Edward
R. Bahr, trombone, and Gary Stutzman, tuba.
The GLCO Sunday Series provides the
community the opportunity to experience
an intimate musical event. Chamber music
has a long history of musicians gathering to
play and sing for one another and a group of
good friends. The Sunday Series of programs
is presented free of charge with the support
of the Roger and Peggy Dicken Schwer Fund
administered by the Petoskey/Harbor
Springs Area Community Foundation.
"Please join us in enjoying the brilliance of
brass ensemble music," said Nancy Koski,
executive director of the GLCO.
The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra pro-
duces live orchestral performances that pro-
vide entertainment, education and inspira-
tion for northern Michigan. Support for the
orchestra is provided by the Michigan
Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, the
National Endowment for the Arts, the
Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community
Foundation, the Bay Harbor Foundation, the
Charlevoix County Community Foundation,
Meijer, and more than 300 individual
patrons of the arts. For more information
about the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra,
go to www.glcorchestra.org.
Jack Segal, former senior U.S. diplomat
and member of the White House National
Security Council, will speak about the Arab
revolution at North Central Michigan College
on Tuesday, April 16 at noon in the Library
Conference room as part of the Colleges free
Global Awareness series.
Syria is in flames, Egyptians are back in the
streets, Algerian and French troops are chas-
ing Islamist terrorists in the Sahara desert
and the Pentagon is building new bases in
North Africa for drone strikes against Al
Qaida. The Middle East and North Africa
remain in a state of turmoil with democracy,
free speech, and the rights of women hang-
ing in the balance. Jack will discuss what
Western countries might do to try to bring
some stability and hope to this troubled
region.
No reservations are required. This free pro-
gram is sponsored by the Michigan Global
Awareness Consortium, a group of commu-
nity colleges dedicated to bringing global
issues, international opportunities and infor-
mation to their campuses. For more infor-
mation, call 231-348-6705.
North Central Michigan College is an
open-door community college based in
Petoskey. Through its University Center
partnerships, students can take courses lead-
ing to certificates, bachelors and masters
degrees from participating universities.
North Centrals Corporate and Community
Education offers workforce training, profes-
sional development seminars and personal
interest workshops. In addition to its main
campus in Petoskey, North Central offers
classes, academic advising, testing and other
services in Cheboygan and Gaylord. North

The "Remembering Ally: Distracted
Driving Awareness Campaign" was honored
at the Governor's Traffic Safety Advisory
Commission (GTSAC) annual awards lunch-
eon on Wednesday, March 27th for dissemi-
nating information about the dangers of dis-
tracted driving.
The awards luncheon was part of the 18th
Annual Michigan Traffic Safety Summit,
which was held at the Kellogg Hotel and
Conference Center in East Lansing.
Hundreds of traffic safety professionals were
in attendance from around the state of
Michigan, and eight Outstanding Traffic
Safety Achievement awards and three long-
term awards were presented.
"Through a partnership with many public
safety agencies and businesses that have a
passion for saving lives, an award-winning
campaign was developed that continues to
garner international attention," said Jim
Santilli, executive director of the Traffic
Improvement Association of Michigan (TIA).
"Research has proven that traffic crashes can
be prevented through effective public educa-
tion campaigns, such as the one we created
right here in Michigan."
The "Remembering Ally: Distracted
Driving Awareness Campaign" includes a tel-
evision public service announcement, video
depicting a dramatization of a distracted
driving crash, multimedia presentation, and
materials available to schools and law
enforcement agencies across the country.
The campaign was created by TIA in honor
of Ally Zimmerman, a 16-year-old Romeo
High School student and Oakland County
resident, who was hit by a distracted driver
on December 28, 2010. She later died from
her injuries.
It is estimated more than 100,000 people
have been impacted by the campaign's mes-
sage. The crash video, which was filmed in
Clinton Township during December of 2011,
has been viewed in more than 90 countries.
The video previously received an award for
production excellence.
The agencies that participated in creating
the crash video include: Clinton Township
Department of Fire, Rescue and EMS;
Clinton Township Police Department; Henry
Ford Macomb Hospitals; Macomb County
Sheriff's Office; Macomb Township Fire
Department; Medstar Ambulance; Michigan
Department of Transportation; Michigan
State Police; Ruehle's Towing; Traffic
Improvement Association of Michigan; and,
U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Detroit.
"The Macomb County Sheriff's Office was
honored to participate in the development
of the Remembering Ally: Distracted Driving
Awareness Campaign," said Macomb County
Sheriff Anthony Wickersham. "The Sheriff's
Office remains dedicated to working with
other agencies to reduce traffic crashes and
prevent tragedies from occurring."
Attending the luncheon for the award was:
Santilli; Wickersham; Commander Joseph
Deer, commanding officer of the U.S. Coast
Guard Air Station Detroit; Bob Felt,
spokesman of the Michigan Department of
Transportation; Lieutenant Gary Megge of
the Michigan State Police Traffic Services
Section; Kolby Miller, chief executive officer
of Medstar Ambulance; Chief Robert Phillips
of the Macomb Township Fire Department;
Deputy Chief Michael Phy of the Clinton
Township Department of Fire, Rescue and
EMS; Barbara Rossmann, president and chief
executive officer of Henry Ford Macomb
Hospitals; Captain Monica Yesh, district
commander of the Michigan State Police;
Milly Barnhart, Ally's grandmother; David
and Laurel Zimmerman, Ally's parents; and,
Garrett Marcum, Ally's brother.
"Inspired by the love of a grieving family,
this campaign sends a compelling message
to drivers and passengers young and old,"
said Rossmann. "Our hospitals are too fre-
quently dealing with the trauma associated
with traffic injuries. Working with other
agencies, our goal is to help prevent these
tragedies through education."
Financial sponsors of the campaign
included: Botsford Hospital Trauma Services,
Carrier & Gable, Inc., Chrysler Group, LLC.,
DTE Energy Foundation, Ford Motor
Company, General Motors Company, RDJ
Specialties, Inc., Takata Corporation, and
various individual donors.
"Kudos to the Traffic Improvement
Association of Michigan, and the many other
agencies, for their efforts to educate teen
drivers about the dangers of distracted driv-
ing," said Secretary of State Ruth Johnson.
"The campaign effectively reaches teens and
saves lives. I congratulate everyone on this
honor."
The GTSAC was formed in 2002 to serve as
the state's forum for identifying key traffic
safety challenges and developing and imple-
menting plans to address those issues. The
GTSAC is comprised of representatives from
the departments of: Community Health,
Education, State, State Police, and
Transportation, as well as Office of the
Governor, Office of Services to the Aging,
and Michigan Office of Highway Safety
Planning. There are also three representa-
tives from local government appointed by
the Governor.

More and more people seem to be doing hard-core work-
outs these days. Some people sign up for some boot camp
style exercise programs. You do not have to exercise like a
maniac to achieve amazing results.
There also seem to be more infomercials on TV for extreme
workout regimens such as P90X, the program made famous
by vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan last summer, and the
Insanity workout, which is so hard to do, its creators say, that
it will push you past your limits.
Even on the TV show The Biggest Loser, the trainers have
the contestants working out to the point that theyre literally
falling off treadmills.
But is it really necessary to exert yourself in such an intense
way to greatly improve your health and fitness? Many people
believe that the answer is yesand for this reason, these peo-
ple dont exercise. And thats terrible!
Because in fact, the best exercise for most people is one
thats already quite familiar and quite enjoyableand much
less physically taxing than those sweat-till-you-puke work-
outs that some people are putting themselves through.
Get back to basics
The best exercise iswalking! People have the right to top-
ple off a treadmill in exhaustion if that is what it takes to pro-
vide motivation. But Mark Fenton, MS, an adjunct associate
professor in the John Hancock Research Center on Physical
Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity Prevention at the
Tufts University School of Nutrition Science and
Policy in Boston, author of two books on walking
and the former host of the Americas Walking
series on PBS television, is convinced that the
simple activity of putting one foot in front of the
other is the ideal exercise for most people. Heres
why
Youre less likely to feel pain or get hurt. The
reason is that youre operating within a very natu-
ral range of motion for your body. Youre not ask-
ing your muscles or joints to do anything that
theyre not used to doing, and so the likelihood of
soreness or injury is very low, said Fenton. Plus,
unlike running and other high-impact sports,
walking is low-impact, so the load that youre put-
ting on your bodys joints when you walk is much
less.
Its convenient. Walking is such a flexible activ-
ity, said Fenton. You can do it anytime and any-
where. You dont need a partner or teammates, as
you do with tennis, basketball or soccer. Its also
easy to fit walking into a busy schedule because
you dont have to do the entire workout at once.
Unlike taking, say, a 30-minute fitness class,
where you truly need to spend 30 consecutive
minutes exercising, you dont have to do 30 con-
secutive minutes of walking, said Fenton. You
can break it up into three 10-minute walks and
still get the benefit.
Its free. Perhaps best of all, you dont need to pay for a per-
sonal trainer, fancy equipment, a gym membership or any-
thing else. You just need a comfortable pair of shoes.
Its suitable for any fitness level. If the last time you broke a
sweat was in high school gym class, then walking is the perfect
workout for you. For inspiration, just look at Michael Moore,
the documentary filmmaker who is famous for (among other
things) his, well, potato-like look. Even someone as over-
weight and out of shape as he is has been able to commit to
walkingand has grown to love the activity. In fact, he shared
on Facebook that hes been walking 30 minutes a day, every
day, since March 18 of last year, and that walking has had a
healthy domino effect on his life, helping him sleep better, feel
better and take better care of himself.
Walking is also great for people who are already moderately
active. Thats because you can speed up your walks, walk
uphill or walk for longer periods of time whenever you want to
intensify the workout, Fenton pointed out.
What about people who are already quite active and fitis
walking good for them, too? Admittedly, if youre already, say,
an avid runner or tennis player, then a typical walk may not be
enough of a workout to make you even fitter. But that
describes a small fraction of people, said Fenton, and even
those people could benefit from about one day a week of gen-
tle walking to give their muscles a breakespecially in the
early stages of training for a race or tournament, when doing
too much too soon is a common cause of injury. However,
Fenton said, Walking at high intensity is actually an effective
workout for more fit individuals. For example, race-walkers
cruising at six to 10 miles per houryes, a jogging pace for
most peopleburn as many calories as someone taking a jog.
And elite race-walkers have aerobic fitness levels comparable
to elite runners. So walking truly can take your fitness to any
level.
Youre more likely to stick with it. For all of the reasons
above!

Petoskey McLaren Northern Michigan is
offering a program to provide emotional sup-
port to children (ages 5-12) who have a parent
or other loved one diagnosed with cancer.
The six-week program is called CLIMB,
which stands for Childrens Lives Include
Moments of Bravery. Through CLIMB, art and
play activities help children to understand and
develop coping skills. This free community
service is funded by McLaren Northern
Michigan Foundation.
The goal is to help children identify and
express the complex feelings they may experi-
ence during this difficult time. If there is a child
who may benefit from support in navigating
their way through a loved ones cancer diagno-
sis, please know this resource is available, said
Amy L. Juneau, an oncology social worker at
McLaren Northern Michigan.
Through CLIMB, children will learn:
Cancer is not their fault.
They are not alone.
About cancer and treatment options.
How to express their feelings.
How to manage anger.
How to communicate effectively
with loved ones with cancer.
The program will take place from 5:30 to 7
p.m. on Mondays, April 15, 22, 29 and May 6,
13 and 20 at the Community Health Education
Center (CHEC) located across the parking lot
from the main entrance to McLaren Northern
Michigan.
CLIMB was developed by The Childrens
Treehouse Foundation, a non-profit founda-
tion dedicated to the emotional support of
children who have parents or grandparents
with cancer.
For more information or to enroll a child in
the CLIMB program, please contact Amy
Juneau, at 231.487.4015.
