B.Tech IV Year I Semester (R09) Regular & Supplementary Examinations December/January 2013/14 ELECTRONIC MEASUREMENTS AND INSTRUMENTATION Time: 3 hours Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** 1 (a) (b) Explain the method of calibrating the shunt type ohmmeter. A shunt type ohmmeter uses a 10 mA basic D Arsonval movement with an internal resistance of 40 . The battery voltage is 2 V. It is desired to modify the current by adding appropriate shunt resistance across the movement indicates 5 at the midpoint scales. Calculate: (i) The value of shunt resistance. (ii) Value of current limiting resistance R1. Discuss about the basic theory of an oscillator explaining the Barkhausen criteria in detail. Give brief description about the types of oscillations. What is total harmonic distortion? Define harmonies. What is VTVM? Draw the circuit used in continuous sweep CRO and explain its working. Also explain the function of timing resistor and timing capacitor. What is the advantage of triggered sweep CRO over continuous sweep CRO? Explain its working with a circuit diagram and output waveform. Explain the principle and working of a dual trace oscilloscope. And list the applications. Draw Maxwell bridge circuit and derive the bridge balance equations. Describe the Kelvin double bridge for the measurement of small resistance. With the help of a neat sketch explain the principle, working, construction, characteristics and applications of LVDTs. State different elements of data logger and with the help of a neat block diagram explain the functions of each block. Max Marks: 70

Explain the function of a multiplier in a dc voltmeter. Explain how multiplier resistance can be calculated. Differentiate between a function generator and pulse and square wave generator. Which range of frequency the modulation in modern signal generator is done internally? What is the function of the local oscillator in a hetero dyne wave analyzer? Explain with a neat block diagram the working of an RF heterodyne Wave analyzer. Draw the basic block diagram of oscilloscope and state the functions of each block. If the distance between two peaks measured on the X-axis is 2 cm, at 1 ms/div. What is the frequency of the signal? Explain the front panel of digital storage oscilloscope. For a communication lab, signals up to 2 GHz are considered. Explain different specifications you consider for CRO selection. A Maxwell bridge is used to measure inductive impedance at a frequency of 3 KHz. The bridge constants at balance are arm 1: a capacitor of value 0.02 F in shunt with 390 kohm; arm 3 opposite to the arm 1 is having the unknown component; the other arms have each 18 kohm resistor. Find the equivalent series circuit of the unknown impedance. What is the value of the quality factor? What is the usual procedure for balancing the Maxwell bridge? What is the necessity for following such a procedure? Explain with the circuit diagram. Describe the operation of optical pyrometers. Explain the working of a turbine flow meter with a neat diagram. The internal battery voltage is 2 V. A half scale deflection marking desired is 1000 . Calculate: (i) Values of R1 and R2. (ii) Maximum value of R2 to compensate for a 3% drop in battery voltage. Give the construction of shunt type ohm meter and explain the scale of shunt ohmmeter. List the requirements of pulse generator. Explain with the help of a block diagram the laboratory type square wave generator. What is the principal used in heterodyne wave analyzer? Explain the operation of a spectrum analyzer. Explain the deflection of the vertical axis of an oscilloscope. Differentiate vertical axis and horizontal axis of an oscilloscope. Explain with the help of neat diagram the working of DFM. Which type of bridge circuit is used to determine the dissipated factor of a capacitor? Draw the circuit and derive the expression for the unknown elements. Draw the Andersons bridge circuit and derive the expression for the unknown elements. Explain briefly about thermistor. A thermistor has = 3140 k and the resistance at 270 c is 1050 . The thermistor is used for temperature measurement and the resistance measured is as 2330 . Find the measured temperature. Why a D /A converter are usually considered decoders?
