Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** 1 (a) Discuss the number and depth of bore note studies in geo-technical investigations. (b) Define disturbed, indisturbed and representative samples. Explain their use. 2 (a) Discuss the different types of slope failures. (b) An infinite slope is made of clay with the following properties: , and . If the slope has an inclination of 35 and height equal to 12 m, determine the stability of slope, when (i) the slope is submerged (ii) there is seepage parallel to the slope. 3 (a) Differentiate critically between Rankine and Coulomb theories of earth pressure. (b) A retaining wall 4 m high supports a backfill with horizontal top. The wall is pushed towards the fill. Compute the total force acting on the wall. The properties of the fill are as follows: Cohesion is 25 kN/m2, the angle of shearing resistance is 20 and the unit weight is 18 kN/m3. Use Rankines method. 4 (a) What is a retaining wall? Explain the different types of retaining walls with neat sketches. (b) An L-shaped retaining wall is constructed to retain dry sand. The unit weight of sand is 17 kN/m3, and the angle of shearing resistance is 32 . The base of the wall is placed 6 m below the top of the level backfill. The thickness of the base and that of the stem is 0.4 m. The base width is 3.5 m. The angle of friction between the concrete and the foundation material can be taken as 20 . Check the stability of the retaining wall against overturning and sliding. 5 (a) Discuss the various types of foundations. (b) A circular footing is resting on stiff saturated clay with . The depth of foundation is 2 m. Determine the diameter of the footing if the column load is 600 kN. Assume a factor of safety as 2.5. The bulk unit weight of soil is 20 kN/m3. 6 (a) Differentiate between general shear failure and the local shear failure. How the ultimate bearing capacity in local shear is determined? (b) A rectangular footing (3 m x 2 m) exerts a pressure of 100 kN/m2 on a cohesive soil . Determine the immediate settlement at the centre assuming (i) The footing is flexible (I = 1.36). (ii) The footing is rigid (I = 1.36). 7 (a) What are the conditions where a pile foundation is more suitable than a shallow foundation? (b) A pile is driven with a single acting steam hammer of weight 15 kN with a free fall of 900 mm. The final set, the average of the last three blows is 27.5 mm. Find the safe load using engineering news formula. 8 (a) What is negative skin friction? (b) A 16-pile group has to be arranged in the form of a square in soft clay with uniform spacing. Neglecting end bearing, determine the optimum value of spacing of the piles in terms of pile diameter, assuming a shear mobilization factor of 0.6. *****
