Monitoring of Climate Change Risk Impacts of Sea Level

Rise on Groundwater and Agriculture in the Nile Delta

The relation among Sea Level Rise, groundwater table and

salinization of soils and groundwater

Dr. Mohamed Ismail

LOA 1 Activities
Establishment of (75) seventy five bathometers
LOA 2 Activities
Monitoring and data collection activities of ground water depth,
ground water salinity, and soil salinity

LOA 1 Activities
Establishment of (75) seventy five bathometers
(75) seventy five bathometers were Located in the Mediterranean
costal area between Abukeer in Alexandria governorate to Shark
Eltafreaa in Portsaid (weatern Portsaid) governorate, in Egypt.
To collect the data of ground water level, water table salinity, and
salinity composition
SWERI establish seventy five (75) bathometers which are provided by
the recipient organization and FAO, and its location were adjusted
according to:
Ground truth using GPS.
Cultivated crop in the field.

1- SWERI Data collection GPS system was used to locate the bathometers location

2- Establishment the observation wells

LOA 2 Activities

Monitoring and data collection activities ground water depth,

ground water salinity, and soil salinity
The collected data content two types:
The soil samples were collected and analyzed. The soil samples
will be collected three times started in June 2011 because the
soil properties were not change in short time (every 15 days).
The water table depth and water table salinity were collected
every 15 days started from 15/6/2011 to 30/10/2012 (for Ten
time).
Achieved data collected of first five months (June 2011 to October 2011)

Ongoing work
Current data collected of second five months (October 2011 to February
2012 )

1- Data collected of water table depth and salinity every 15 days

2- Second data collected of soil salinity

3- Produce some samples of water table depth and salinity maps

Future work
Future data collected of third five months (March 2012 to August 2012 )

1- Complete Data collected of water table depth and salinity

every 15 days

2- Complete the last data collected of soil salinity March 2012

3- Correlation, ANOVA, and multi regression analysis to study
the collected data
4- used simulation model to calculate and simulate the effect of
increasing Sea Level Rise
