Hypotheses that were the focus of intense research and scientific debate when I was in school and college are routinely taught today. Some examples: --Locating earthquake epicenters --Structure and characteristics of Earths layers --Plate Tectonics: boundaries and motions
Seismograms from many earthquakes proved that P-waves were refracted (bent) as they moved through the Earth, and S-waves were stopped by liquids.

Convection results from less-dense fluids rising and more-dense fluids sinking. Its really not as simple as this diagram seems to show.

Throughout the 1960s, Vine, Matthews, and many other researchers explored this hypothesis and developed the modern theory of plate tectonics.
By the late 1960s, representations like this of the surface boundaries of the tectonic plates became familiar. These have been refined during the past 40 years, but basically have been proved.

Global Tomography
Key to much of new, detailed understandings are techniques that utilizes complex computer-based technology to represent convection within the mantle. Global tomography may be compared somewhat to a CAT scan of the brain it represents a 2-D image of a 3-D environment.

In the image, the red dots indicate seismic events. The color patterns indicate variations in seismic velocities at different depths. The motivation for studying 3-D structure of the Earth's interior is that it may offer the best information on the dynamic processes in the deep interior of the Earth. As the seismic wave speeds change with temperature, it is plausible to obtain 3-D snapshots of the convection pattern in the Earth.Adam Dziewonski
