Welcome to 2014! As we look forward to the new year, the City Council and I are addressing new challenges and opportunities, many dealing with our municipal utility systems. These challenges will involve some large capital projects and the City needs to raise revenues to cover the costs of these projects. The Council is working through the process to increase fees for water, sewer, electric, and garbage. These fees will show on the March 1st utility bills. Water: A 5% increase in water rates will help to pay for water tower maintenance. It is estimated to cost over $160,000 to paint the interior and exterior of the tower. For a customer using 3,000 gallons of water per month, this will increase the bill by 86. Sanitary Sewer: The City is looking at a major project at the sewer treatment plant in the coming years. This may be a renovation of the existing plant or potentially even a mulit-million dollar new plant. This will involve substantial increases in sewer fees in the coming years. The City would like to begin placing money in a capital fund for this project. Sewer rates will also increase by 5%. For a customer using 3,000 gallons of water per month, sewer rates will also increase by 86. Electric: Electric rates have been increased over the past few years to pay for dramatically increasing wholesale power costs and to pay expenses from the severe 2010 Ice Storm which depleted the Electric Fund. As wholesale power costs continue to rise, a small increase in retail rates is still needed. Electric rates will increase by 2%. For a residential customer using 1,200 kWh per month, their bill will increase by $1.24. Garbage: The City entered into a contract extension with Rudd Sanitation which increased the contract cost. To fund this increase, the retail base fee will increase by $1.25 per month. The cost for garbage bags will be unchanged. The City Council and I are committed to provide safe, reliable utility services at a reasonable fee. Look for more information as we work through these large capital projects.

Lake View is fortunate to have a congregate meal site for our seniors. The 60+ Meals serve a nutritional meal at the American Legion Hall weekdays at 11:30 a.m. The suggested contribution is $3.50 per meal. Everyone is welcome to attend 60+ meals. Here are several reminders to keep everyone safe this winter: 1. Vehicles may not be parked on the streets when snow is falling or predicted, or during snow removal operations. Vehicles parked on the street may be subject to a $20.00 parking ticket. 2. Please keep your sidewalk clear. Residents are reminded that they are to remove any ice and snow accumulations from their sidewalks within a reasonable period of time. 3. Do not push snow in the street. City Code prohibits the placement of snow in the streets as it can create a traffic hazard.
