Traditional air foil design Pros and cons of curvature and amount of curvature Vertical vs. horizontal structure Anemometer vs. water wheel Basket design Pulley material Heavy vs. lightweight blade design Basic Objectives: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) To lift ten marbles in under 10 seconds using a pulley system Device must be wind powered (no mechanical advantage) Wind power must be converted to torque (mechanical energy) Device must be 40cm away from fan

Slide 2

Traditional wind turbine design Pros: used in industry (lots of data available) , space efficient , Cons: difficult to build/design the blades, not as stable, heavier weight

Water wheel design Pros: very sturdy (low center of gravity) , lightweight, large wind capturing area, easy to assemble Cons: acts as a wall, therefore needs more fastening to keep it in place, takes up more space, more invasive in nature (aesthetics)

Anemometer design Pros: extremely lightweight, easy to assemble, active in light breezes, Cons: pulley system difficult to make with degree of rotation, less stable,

Slide 4 Innovation Traditional windmill design consists of a series of vertical air foils Design similar to the water wheel A water wheel design was more effective given the design constraints and objectives because it was better able to operate under low wind speeds and develop the maximum possible torque

Assembly Slots in the material make it easy to attach and detach parts Many parts are interchangeable Mass production would be inexpensive and require few molds Onsite assembly would be quick and require little effort

Functionality Will develop maximum torque under wind conditions Will lift required weight under time limit Spins freely, limited friction Sturdy and stable

Lightweighting Lightweight material (ie. cardboard) Utilizes lightest base possible while still maintaining stability

Slide 5 Teamwork Spread work out evenly Clear communication (ensure that each group member knows what is expected of them and understands the schedule) Ensure that each group member has the opportunity to share their ideas

Lessons learned Bring all required tools and do not rely on everything you need being provided a) We excepted to be able to build our prototype on build day but were hampered due to the fact that we did not have access to all the necessary tools b) The tools provided were not the right tools for our project Ex) Cutting tools were not sharp enough to easily cut cardboard. We wasted a lot of time cutting that could have been better spent improving our prototype if we had brought our own cutting tools.

Time management a) Left building prototype until last minute (spend too much time on the design phase) and we didnt have time for much testing. We build the prototype at the last minute and did not have much time for revisions.

What to bring: (Wednesday is final design build day) More stiff cardboard Exacto knife Scissors Scotch tape and duct tape White glue and hot glue Wire

Anything else you can think of.
