Slippery surfaces The number one injury we tend to see in winter is slips and falls, stated Dr. Robert Beyer, an emergency medicine physician who works primarily out of Community Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls. Especially when we have an excess of snow and ice, falls are very common for us to see. Its very important to be careful. Senior citizens should be especially cautious, said Beyer. Their bones are more brittle and some fractureslike a hip fracturecan be pretty devastating, he said. Seniors should have someone with them when they walk on ice and, in gener-

Cold temperatures As many as 700 people die each year from frostbite or hypothermia, according to the National Safety Council. That, however, is the extreme and the danger begins well before that, said Beyer, as frostnipthe precursor to frostbiteis far more likely. Once the temperatures start to drop significantly below zero with the wind chill, you are at risk, the doctor said. Once you start to feel pain, that is frostnip. Frostbite is numbness that

...Winter safety
From page 1
is analogous to burning. Stay inside as much as possible, Beyer said, but when heading outdoors follow this advice: Cover all exposed areas. Layer clothing and wear proper material. As a rule, dress in layers, Beyer said. Cotton breathes, but it also absorbs moisture. In order to avoid this, active individuals should wear synthetic clothing that traps heat without holding onto the dampness of sweat. Go inside periodically. If youre going to be outside longer than 30 minutes, make sure you take breaks to go inside and warm up, said the doctor. Fire and carbon monoxide We tend to get a lot more chimney fires in the winter, said John Delain, public education coordinator for the Germantown Fire Department. This happens when people dont have their chimneys properly cleaned and inspected. Delain recommends this be done once per year and he also advises families to have a carbon monoxide detector on all levels of their house. Carbon monoxide emergencies also rise during the winter months due to the use of the furnace, he explained. Driving Motorists should carry a survival kit when traveling, said Delain, especially since driving emergencies are much more likely to occur during the winter than any other season. According to the Weather Channel website, the kit should include: blankets; a snow shovel; a flashlight; hand warmers; matches; bottles of water and protein bars; a syphon pump; lightsticks; flares; and a whistle. Delain also noted jumper cables, an ice scraper and a fire extinguisher. Its always good to have a supply kit in your car, he said. A lot of stores even sell pre-made roadside emergency kits; they can be obtained very conveniently. Winter activities Wisconsin winters are too long for people to sit inside idle, said Beyer, but pointed out that with hobbies such as skiing, sledding, snowmobiling and ice skating, awareness is key. As a rule, these sports are incredibly safe as long as you take a few precautions, said the doctor. A few guidelines are: Go easy the first time out for the season. Dont do a strenuous activity that youre not prepared for, said Beyer. Most of the sports-related activities we see are when its the individuals first time out for the year and they dont have their sea legs yet. Just like driving in the snow for the first time each year, theres a bit of a learning curve. Watch the alcohol. Use alcohol in moderation, said the doctor. A lot of the crashes and fatalities we see with these activities involve alcohol. Also, he noted, alcohol numbs ones senses and depresses the central nervous system so a person may not feel the full effect of the cold weather. They are more prone to things like hypothermia and dehydration, said Beyer. Know your surroundings. Never walk on a lake or river if you dont know how thick the ice is, said Delain, noting that various state websites give ice reports. Use common sense with physical chores. Even with mundane tasks such as shoveling, caution should be used, said Delain. The elderly and individuals with poor cardiovascular health should ask for assistance, he said. Bottom line: Be smart in the winter. Whatever youre doing, be extremely aware of your surroundings and be mindful of your senses, said Beyer.

Dear Dr Winter: My boyfriend just got 19 extractions and immediate dentures, but he has a very obvious overbite with the new dentures. I was just wondering if this could be due to the initial swelling from the extractions or is he stuck looking like this? He looks very unnatural and his lip sticks out. Any advice you give would be appreciated. Dear Melissa, these are great questions and should be answered by his dentist and surgeon. I don't know if the denture was supposed to remove the overbite he originally had or not. Sometimes the surgeon or surgical dentist will remove more bone in the upper jaw so the denture and teeth can be brought back into a more normal bite, called a Class 1 bite arrangement. As they are immediate dentures they are always made before the teeth are removed so there is some guess-work involved as to where to place the teeth. That is often why dentists will remove back teeth first, allow for healing to occur then make the immediate dentures. This will allow them to set up the back teeth and take an accurate relation between the two jaws to cut down on cosmetic and bite related problems. Then the dentists will remove the front teeth and deliver the denture. This process will decrease the guess-work and allow the laboratory to only remove and set a few teeth as opposed to guessing the positions of an entire arch of teeth at one time. This will also result in a better fit as the back gum tissue will have healed and the denture will fit more accurately on the healed tissue. Either way, have your boyfriend see his dentist to evaluate the position of the teeth and the swelling. It is important to know if they placed bonegrafting material in his tooth sockets. This will help prevent bone loss during the first year after teeth are extracted and allow for easier implant placement. People lose 40-60% of the width and height of their remaining bone in the first year

after teeth are removed! So performing grafting is a valuable way to preserve the bone for up to a year while he is deciding if he would like to upgrade to dental implants. Dental implants will greatly improve his chewing and get rid of the plastic in the roof of his mouth. Dentures need to be relined or remade every 3-5 years forever! So I would recommend an implant consultation before the remaining bone erodes and it becomes more difficult to place implants in the future. You can see photos and videos of our dentistry at www.winterdental.com where you can also read about Upgradeable Dentistry(under Publications) and how we can improve your boyfriends chewing and function at a pace you can afford. We welcome our readers to visit our websites and call us for a consultation or comprehensive examination at 414-464-9021. Boys basketball: Germantown sweeps WBY Shootout

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Germantown broke open a close game against Oshkosh North at the end of the first quarter to win 81-55 on the final night of the WBY Shootout at Concordia University Dec. 28. The game got off to a slow start as the teams struggled to score. North took a 7-6 lead after Majok Madot converted a basket. With the teams tied at 9-9, Germantown broke the game open as Brian Bearden scrambled for a rebound off a missed basket at the 1:34 mark and converted a layup, starting an 11-point run. I just try to do anything I can to help my team and then give 120 percent all the time on the floor, Bearden said afterward. An 11-point run at the start of the second quarter gave Germantown a 34-11 lead following a dunk by Evan Wesenberg at the 4:40 mark of the second quarter. Once we got a few long rebounds to get going, then we got in the flow, Germantown Coach Steve Showalter said afterward. At first we couldnt get what we wanted to do against that 1-3-1 (zone). Germantown held a 47-24 lead at halftime and a 12-2 run gave Germantown a 62-32 lead after Dearionte Hudson converted two free throws at the 3:09 mark of the third quarter. The previous evening Germantown gradually pulled away from Milwaukee Vincent to win 75-60. The teams were tied at 6-6 when a short range basket by Wesenberg at the 4:05 mark started a 7-2 run that gave Germantown a 15-8 lead. The Vikings cut Germantown's lead to 28-26 at the 4:56 mark of the second quarter after Malik Brown converted two free throws, but Jake Showalter responded by converting two free throws on the other end as Germantown scored the next nine points. Germantown held a lead between six and 12 points throughout the third quarter and kept the lead at seven points or more throughout the fourth quarter. Theyre not an easy team to play. Theyre athletic, theyre quick, they shot it really well, Coach Showalter said after the game. Showalter added his team didnt play that well and we were still able to fight through and grind out a win. He said its tough to find new ways to win each time. We have to find different ways and its not always easy, and thats a tough team, theyre going to beat a lot of teams, Showalter said. With the two wins, Germantown's consecutive winning streak is now at 67 games. Bearden added that the focus for the team is on the next game. Actually, if you think about it, our calendar year was pretty good,

Showalter said after the win over North. We dont like to celebrate in the middle of the (season), but it is the end of the year. A whole 2012 with zero on the (losing) end and whole 2013 with a zero on the right side, thats hard to do it has to include a good finish at the end and a good start. Its not easy to do and these guys did a pretty good job of it.

Boys basketball: KML wins twice at Shootout, Falls splits games at Chekouras Tourney
Kettle Moraine Lutheran swept both of its games at the WBY Shootout at Concordia University over the Christmas break. The Chargers defeated Brookfield Academy 73-63 Dec. 26. Kettle Moraine Lutheran outscored Brookfield by nine points in the second quarter to break the game open. Ethan Bublitz led the Chargers with 25 points. Brookfield Academy was ranked fifth in the most recent Division 4 coaches poll. Kettle Moraine Lutheran Coach Todd Jahns said the win over Brookfield Academy was significant because playing a high ranked team tests the Chargers. It was a good gauge to see where weve come against a quality team. Our roles are starting to become defined really well. Our team is starting to figure out who we are and what we can be, Jahns said. Bublitz also scored 25 points in the Chargers 64-41 win over University School of Milwaukee Dec. 28. The Chargers started with a 18-5 first quarter run and held a 36-21 lead at halftime. The Chargers kept the lead above 13 points throughout the second half. Against University School, Jahns noted his team liked to run off missed shots and took advantage of several opportunities against University School. Menomonee Falls results Menomonee Falls split its two games at the John Chekouras Tournament at Homestead High School Dec. 27-28. Tips To Make Job Hunting Easier

Job hunting has gone from searching the classifieds to roaming online job boards & career search engines. But before you sit down in front of your computer, ask yourself some important questions and then be prepared to go social. Marc Scoleri, director of Career Services at The Art Institute of New York City, recommends doing a self-directed job search in conjunction with other search techniques. A self-directed job search requires the jobseeker to take into account personal preferences & businesses of interest. He has compiled the following inventory questions: What industry is most interesting to you for a career? Why? What geographic location is most appealing? What duties do you enjoy doing most & least as they relate to your industry? What is the minimum pay you can survive on? What topics within your industry do you want to learn most? What position do you want 3 to 5 years from now? What personal goals can you achieve by obtaining a position in your chosen industry? What is your ideal work schedule? What employer-offered benefits are important? What are some of the job titles that interest you? Whom can you contact within your industry of choice? Afterwards, target companies based on the answers. Contact managers within the department of interest, even if they are not currently hiring. This is where socializing begins & networks are developed. LinkedIn.com has become one of the most respected online networking tools for professionals. Complete a profile on LinkedIn.com and get one step closer to creating a powerful online network. It takes, on average, 65 contacts to create a network large enough to result in substantial and meaningful findings on LinkedIn.com, says Victoria Snabon-Heath, Career Services director at The Art Institute of Tampa. She urges job-seekers to set themselves apart from the load of resumes that inundate companies. "Go social. Begin utilizing virtual, social marketing techniques in addition to your online job search." Students, graduates and the unemployed should extend themselves by joining & volunteering with professional organizations in their field of focus. "Students have participated in monthly social mixers in order to meet the hiring managers and directors who may be too busy during the workweek to respond to e-mails and phone calls from prospective hires. Put yourself out there. It's who you know that can help get you in the door & what you know that keeps you there."
