Welcome to Applications of Therapeutic Services.

I am excited about the

upcoming year and the many wonderful things you will learn. In order to make this year
as successful and enjoyable as possible, it is only fair to inform you from the beginning
of what will be expected from you. Please read the syllabus carefully and make sure you
understand all policies. You will find most of the following to be a matter of common
sense and acceptable behavior; therefore, there should be no problem with these
requirements. However, at the end of the syllabus you will find a designated space for
your signature. By signing this, you are contracting with me that you understand the
policies and will uphold them in their entirety.

Course Requirements and Assessments

This course concentrates on the application of basic skills and anatomy as it
relates to direct patient care. I require exceptional work in all assignments. All
assignments should be neat, thorough, detailed, complete, and prompt.

Grading System
Quizzes 15%
Homework 10%
Disease Diaries 15%
Posters/Presentations/Projects 20%
Tests 40%

90-100 A 80-89 B 75-79 C 70-74 D Below 70 F

Tests
Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. I will give atleast a two day notice
before each test. However, you should know when to expect a test by the pace of the
unit. You will not be tested on any material that has not been thoroughly covered in class.
Therefore, it is in your best interest to pay attention and take good notes in class. The day
before each test we will spend the last 20 minutes of class discussing the test, answering
any questions you may have about the test, and clarifying any content. This discussion
will be student driven. If you come to class with no questions, the discussion will be
rather short. Please look over the chapter material and make sure that you understand the
material before the discussion session.
There will be absolutely no talking during a test. Even if you have finished, you
are not free to talk. Since I cannot be assured that you are not cheating or helping others,
talking during a test will result in an automatic zero. Please read the policy on cheating
in your school handbook carefully.
Quizzes
There will be 2-3 quizzes per week. Quizzes will cover vocabulary, anatomical
structures/systems, and lecture material covered the previous class. Depending on the
number of quizzes for the semester, the lowest one or two quiz grades may be dropped.
Homework
• Late homework will not be accepted under any circumstances.
• Homework is assigned as preparation for upcoming quizzes or tests. It is not
assigned as busy work! You will find that the time you put into your homework will
directly correlate with your success on quizzes and tests!
• Random homework assignments will be graded for accuracy.
• Each student will receive one homework pass per semester. For the assignment that
you chose to use the homework pass, please fill out the required form and turn it in as
your homework.
• Place homework assignments on the corner of your desk prior to the beginning of
class. Homework should be complete, neat, and ready for me to check.
• Keep all homework assignments!
Projects/Papers/Presentations
There will be one paper due this semester and several mini projects and
presentations. I will provide ample time in class to prepare for all of these assignments.
Rubrics will be provided at the time the assignment is made so you will know exactly
how you will be graded. My door is always open to help and offer suggestions; however,
I will not do your project for you!
Disease Diaries
This exercise is created to help you apply the anatomy concepts to diseases that
you will face in the healthcare setting. You can choose any disease that relates to the
body system covered in class. Research the disease of your choice and find the specific
characteristics, causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of that disease. The
information found may be presented in a formal outline, paper, or poster presentation.
Please include atleast one visual graphic to accompany your outline, paper, or poster.
The visual could be almost anything, be creative! All sources and visual graphics should
be documented and cited appropriately. Plagiarism without giving proper credit will
result in a grade of 0. Dishonesty is unacceptable. This assignment should not be
stressful!
Extra Credit
Extra credit is a privilege, not a requirement! There will be several opportunities
throughout the semester to earn extra credit. Opportunities are offered to the entire class
and not on an individual basis. Any work that is exceptional or above and beyond the
requirements listed on the rubric are subject to extra credit. Again, this is at the teacher’s
discretion.
Materials
3 Ring Binder with dividers Index Cards
Notebook Paper Pen/Pencils
Classroom Rules
1. Be prompt to class everyday! You should be seated when the tardy bell rings.
Immediately take out your homework and be prepared to hand in or review.
2. Be prepared! Always bring appropriate materials. Have homework and assigned
reading completed prior to the start of class.
3. Be considerate! Always consider and respect your classmates and teacher. Do not
speak when someone else is speaking. Wait to be recognized if you would like to
speak. Rude and inappropriate language will not be tolerated.
4. Be alert! No sleeping in class!
5. Listen to all instructions and follow them completely.
6. No cosmetics or grooming items in the classroom or skills area.
7. The bell does not dismiss you. Do not pack up your bags or leave your seat until
you are dismissed from class by the teacher.
Disciplinary Guidelines
First Offense: Counsel the student privately
Second Offense: Phone call or note to parent
Third Offense: Detention
Make-up Policy
• If you miss a class for any reason, check your individual folder for any papers or
assignments you may have missed.
• An outline will be in the folder to guide you through the material you missed.
You may check out a text book to fill in the outline or you may copy a classmate’s
notes.
• It is your responsibility to complete and return make-up assignments. You have 5
class days from the day you return to school to turn in the missed assignments;
otherwise you will receive a 0 for any assignments that were graded.
• If you miss a test or a quiz, you will need to meet with me on an individual basis
to schedule a make-up time.
Notebook
Organization is one key to success. It is critical that you keep your notebook
organized throughout the semester. Please divide your notebook into the following four
sections:
• Essential Question
o As soon as you are seated, immediately write the essential question for
the day in your notebook. Answer the question to the best of your
ability. You may not know the answer at the beginning of class, but by
the end of the lecture you should be able to completely answer the
question.
• Homework
o Keep all homework assignments!
o If you turn in a homework assignment to be graded, please re-file the
paper in your notebook when it is graded and returned.
• Notes
o Date your notes.
o Document the unit that we are studying
o Document the standard that we are covering for the day.
• Vocabulary
o Write the vocabulary words for the unit in this section.
o Define these words before the chapter test
o This should be your mini-glossary.
• Handouts
Again, keep your notebook organized. It is essential to your success in this class.
Think of your notebook as your study guide for the chapter tests and semester finals.
There could be random notebook checks or quizzes throughout the semester. These
should be easy 100’s!
Vocabulary
Vocabulary lists will be posted on Monday of each week. These terms will be
covered throughout the lectures during the week. There will be a vocabulary quiz on
Thursday or Friday of each week. Be prepared!
Participation
You are required to participate actively in class activities and discussions. Active
participation includes taking notes during class lectures and working well on individual
and group assignments. Preparation prior to class will make this easy!

I want to see each and every student succeed. However, your success in this class is
dependent upon the effort you put into the class.
I have read the syllabus and fully understand each policy. I will uphold the guidelines set
forth and understand that disciplinary actions will apply should I fail to adhere to these
rules.
