Installation of WinESP: Before proceeding with the installation, it is recommended that you read this file through "Known

issues". The file, Install WinESP Demo.zip, that is to be downloaded is a Zipfile containing the complete set of installation files bundled into a single compressed file. You must have WinZip installed on your computer in order to proceed. If you do not have WinZip, it can be obtained free on the Internet (www.download.com is one source). The installation of WinESP can be done directly from the attachment. 1. Download this file and the file "Install WinESP Demo.zip." Just right-click on each of the two files and select "Copy to Folder" or double-click and select "Save As" to download the files. Be careful about selecting and noting the path to the folder where the files are saved. (One of our people discovered that the default folder to which he saved it was not on his office PC but was on our email server.) The easiest way to handle the download may be to download the files to your Windows Desktop. 2. Double-click the downloaded file "Install WinESP Demo.zip" to open it. This will reveal a listing of the installation files. 3. Locate the file named "Setup.exe" in the list and double-click it. This will start the installation process. Simply follow the prompts to complete the installation."Setup.exe" is a standard Windows installation program that will offer a default directory into which the program will be installed, but will allow the user to select another location and/or directory name into which the program will be installed. If you are updating from a previous version of the program, that version will not be affected by this installation and will still be available on you hard drive. However, the new version is the one that will run when the program is selected from the Windows Start Menu. Known issues: Some Norton programs have interfered with the installation process and with running the program. If the installation is halted prematurely or the program fails to start correctly, disable or close any Norton programs that are running in the background (most will show in the System Tray) and then retry the installation or program start-up. In some cases it may be necessary to use the Control-Alt-Delete key-combination to bring up a display of all running programs in order to shut down any that may not be shown in the System Tray. In this event, stop all programs but "Explore" and "SysTray" and then run the Demo Setup.exe. A reboot of your computer will be needed after the installation is complete in this event.

Using WinESP: Two versions of WinESP are available. The first, WinESP, handles only a single-chamber ESP with up to ten sequential fields. The second, WinESP-MC, includes all of the features of WinESP but will handle up to forty (40) chambers or sub-chambers, each with up to twenty (20) sequential fields. WinESP is intended primarily as a design and diagnostic tool while WinESPMC adds improved modeling for complete multi-chamber systems and CAM purposes. The latter includes separate results for individual chambers/sub-chambers and the calculation of overall combined emissions and opacity for all chambers taken together. The outputs of WinESP-MC in the single-chamber mode are the same as those from WinESP. Some outputs are suppressed in the screen displays of the results in WinESP-MC in the multi-chamber mode as compared to single-chamber mode because of the volume of information generated. However, the complete, detailed outputs can be saved in a disk file for later review. Terms and conditions of use of WinESP are given and readily accessible as the first topic ("license") accessed by the HELP/CONTENTS menu. The text in HELP may be copied digitally or printed for use by the user; however, it may not be reproduced for commercial purposes. These terms and conditions given in WinESP prevail over any conflicts with other terms and conditions that might be made a part of the purchase agreement for this software. There is no operating manual for the program; however, the Help-file provides complete, context-sensitive information regarding the meaning or use of each data-entry input cell and each user-selectable option. A brief description about each entry-cell and option also appears at the top of the WinESP window when the cell/option is selected by the user. Pressing <F1> (the "F1" function key) will bring up the complete Help-file entry concerning the current entry-cell or option. Links to other pertinent information are provided within each Help-file entry. Help-file subjects are listed in broad categories on its Contents page and it contains a searchable index, as well. The Help-file Contents page can also be reached from "Help" on the WinESP Menu-bar. A "browse-sequence" has been provided within the Help-file to direct the new user through the main features of the program. This can be followed from the Help-file Contents page by clicking the ">>" button on the right-hand side of the Help-file button-bar to move forward through the sequence or the adjacent "<<" button to return to the previous item in the sequence. Note: A complete example of an ESP setup is loaded when the program opens. Setting up an ESP modeling run in brief: 1. From the "General Info" (short for General Information) data-entry page: Provide a File-name to be used for saving the ESP setup and the model results. Select the units to be used for data entry (English or Metric). 2. Provide the gas composition to be used (Gas Composition entry page). 3. Provide the inlet particle size distribution and rapping loss size distribution(s) to be used. (Particle Size Dist. entry page)

4. Provide the general design conditions to be used in the model (Design Parameters entry page): Number of chambers Inlet particulate concentration/dust-loading (mass basis) Ash resistivity Gas temperature Barometric pressure ESP inlet static-pressure differential to ambient ESP casing width (Single-chamber version only) ESP casing height (Single-chamber version only) Volumetric flow rate or gas velocity at the casing inlet (SC version only) 5. Provide mechanical details of the design for each chamber (Mechanical data-entry page): ESP casing width (Multi-chamber version only) ESP casing height (Multi-chamber version only) Volumetric flow rate or gas velocity at the casing inlet (MC version only) Number of fields in the direction of gas flow Length of each field Number of lanes across each field Lane widths for each field Number of wires (discharge electrodes) per lane in each field Wire to wire (discharge electrode) spacing for each field Plate height for each field 6. Provide the operating voltage and current for each field or select the program used to calculate them. (Electrical data-entry page). At present rigid-frame electrodes discharge electrodes must be approximated as wires with spacings that match the average spacings in the direction of flow between either the discharge point support rods or the average spacings between the discharge points themselves. A "first generation" set of approximations for rigid-frame electrode operating voltages and currents has been included in the model but we make no representation regarding the accuracy of their results. As soon as sufficient data are in hand to allow improved V-I correlations to be developed for rigid-frame electrodes, provision will be made in the program to accommodate them but there is no timetable for doing so. [Any data that users of the program can provide to help in the development of the correlations would be appreciated.] 7. Provide the wire (discharge electrode) diameter for each field. (Electrical data-entry page). 8. Provide Non-Ideal Parameter inputs: (On Analysis Options page in single-chamber mode or Miscellaneous data-entry page in Multi-chamber mode). These include: Velocity distribution standard deviations

Gas sneakage fractions Numbers of baffled sections 9. Select the maximum number of iterations to be performed (typically 3) if convergence to a stable solution is not obtained. (Analysis Options page) 10. Provide the path-length (stack diameter) to be used if opacity is to be calculated.(On Analysis Options page for single-chamber mode and combined emissions from multiple chambers and Miscellaneous page for individual chambers in Multi-chamber mode.) 11. Click the "Calculate" button. (Analysis Options page) 12. When the calculations have been completed, a small window will open in the upper left corner of the Analysis Options page. Moving the mouse pointer over this window will cause it to expand to reveal the results in tabular form. At the same time the "Graph" item on the WinESP menu will be enabled. Clicking it will bring up the graphical display window and allow the results to be seen and/or printed in a number of user-selectable formats.
