SEPTEMBER 29 PANTHEISM DAVE GERLACH Dale is former lay minister from Fox Valley Unitarian Fellowship, but now hes finished seminary! It seems one often-neglected religion/spirituality is Pantheism. But it is a very life-affirming, nature-based religion that could hold a lot of promise for us as UUs and for the world at large. This Sunday well be treated to a look at this religion from the point of view of a proponent who has come to truly appreciate its appeal. Dave has helped to form and lead a UU Pantheists of Eastern Wisconsin group, has served as a panelist for an adult RE program on Pantheism, and has been involved with planning of a number of MidWinter Pantheist Retreats as well as solstice celebrations.

Shes on their county board, but she grew up in Two Rivers. She says, "The topic will examine the ages-old problem of starkly differing racial perspectives on various realities...and what might be done about it." You can be sure it will be interesting! LUUF BOARD NEWS

The August 2013 LUUF Board meeting was held on Wednesday, August 28th. Bev Rawling joined the meeting to discuss a request from the Environment Committee. Below is a short summary of the items discussed at the meeting. FINANCES Joel reported that our finances continue to be on track due to the generosity of all of our members and friends in contributing not only to support our general operations but also the four organizations we regularly support. On August 25th, we collected over $170 for TREP. Many thanks to everyone for their continuing support. As directed by the Fellowship at the May 2013 Annual Meeting, we contributed $500 to the Midwest District of the UUA. FACILITIES As those of you who were at the picnic on Sunday may have noticed, there has been repair work done on some of the sections of the sidewalk in the front of the building. Additional grinding of additional sections will be done shortly. Thanks for Ron Kossik for being the point person on this effort. Dick Urban reported on some research he did on ways to reduce the sound in

And thanks also to everyone who presented and all who engaged in the discussions following the presentations. What a wonderful way for us to get to know each other as we share special parts of our lives.

the kitchen area. Suggestions included encouraging some members and friends to congregate in the meeting room where there would be an additional coffee pot and cups; adding wall hangings, a quilt, fabric from the ceiling, or curtains; installing acoustic tiles or sound reduction boxes to the ceiling. The board will continue to discuss this issue and assess the financial implications of each of the options. For a starter, well begin having the extra pot of coffee in the meeting room and see what impact that has. STRATEGIC PLANNING The Board continued our discussion of engaging in a Strategic Planning session(s) this fall and will confer with Cathy Edwards about a date for them sometime in the next month or two. Information will be sent to all as soon as more definite plans on the when, how, etc. are completed. If there members or friends who are interested in working with Cathy please contact Cathy or Kathie. WORKSHOP ON COOL CONGREGATIONS Bev Rawling, on behalf of the Environment Committee, requested use of the Fellowship for a Training

Workshop on how to conduct a Cool Congregations program sponsored by RUTH and the Wisconsin Interfaith Power and Light organization. The mission of the Wisconsin Interfaith Power and Light organization is to inform, train, and activate people of all faiths and faith communities to take concrete steps In response to global warming through the promotion of energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy in order to protect Earths ecosystems, safeguard public health, and insure just, sufficient and sustainable energy for all. The board approved the request which will be held on Sunday, October 27th from 1-4pm. NEXT BOARD MEETING At least three of the seven board members will be out of town on the week of the next regularly scheduled board, so the board may schedule a virtual meeting in September. If anyone has any item(s) that you would like to address, please contact Kathie. Subsequent meetings will be held on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Our friends from the Synagogue Anshe Poale Zeke will continue to use our facility during the evenings of the upcoming High Holy Days on Thursday and Friday, September 5th and 6th; Friday and Saturday, September 13th and 14th; Thursday, September 19th; and Thursday, September 26th

The day-to-day life of our fellowship is the glue that holds our spiritual community together. Unitarian Universalism approaches the more "secular" aspects of fellowship life with the same religious intent as its worship. Our religious education classes, adult activities groups, community volunteerism and building facilities committees are essential aspects of our spiritual work. We believe it is our deeds, not our creeds, which are most important. Volunteer opportunities abound! Please consider signing up for coffee service, greeter, shoveling, or any other activity or job that helps to keep our fellowship moving forward and running smoothly. Volunteer sign up sheets are in the coat room .Every day we have people helping the Fellowship in ways that allow our community to thrive. Whether you are a board member, on a committee, you make coffee, do dishes, vacuum, shovel snow, rack leaves, plan a garden, help coordinate a service or you do one of the other contless tasks, the time and talents you share is incredibly important for our Fellowship community. Please know you are immensely appreciated.

The Childrens Religious Education Fall Session

Experiences With the Web of Life Part 2 begins on Sunday, September 8, 2013 and will run through Sunday, December 15, 2013. All children from the ages of 4/5 through 10/11 are invited to participate in this fun and lively program.

Don't forget meditation on Sunday evenings at LUUF at 6:30 Relax, reflect and realign For a calming start to you week.

The goal of meditation is to bring inner peace within oneself and the world in a positive and spiritual way. The world may not always be a peaceful place and within every soul there is some form of tension and stress. It is therefore essential to create positive and peaceful thoughts to bring peace to our mind. Meditation is one of the best methods to bring about transformation and nurture the natural qualities within. "Peace is not always the absence of conflict, but the ability to cope with it"

Join our own artist Beth Barfield for creative fun on Saturday, September 21st at 10:00am. We're going to decorate T-shirts to express our inner UU (or whatever joy of life is springing inside you!). All you need to bring is a pre-shrunk white t-shirt and a piece of firm cardboard, foam core board or poster board, as a base. Beth will supply all the art supplies. (Tip: Walgreens has 4/$10.) Hobby Lobby is another source. This creative get-together will be the first of a variety of monthly programs

Green Living On Behalf of the Earth GLOBE

GLOBE Is up and running with our first meeting of this program year on August 18th! Our mission includes, among other things, coordinating environmental activities at LUUF, and encouraging and informing ecological awareness among members and friends. To meet those goals it was decided to continue activities which began just last year- mention of environmental news (Joys and Concerns) at Sunday services, continuing Green Tips in our Sunday Orders of Service, and monthly articles in the LUUF newsletter with information the group would like to share. GLOBE has purchased the rights to use a five-week environmental justice curriculum called Our Place in the Web of Life from the UUA Ministry for Earth. GLOBE and the LUUF Adult Activities Committee will cooperatively present the series beginning Tuesday evening October 22nd, concluding before Thanksgiving. GLOBE is also working on A Cool Congregation workshop presented by Wisconsin Interfaith Power & Light (Wonderful name!) in the afternoon on Sunday October 27th. Mark your calendars for both of these events now! Everyone is welcome at both the series and the workshop. Details will follow closer to the dates. GLOBE is looking for an LUUF representative (or even a few to take turns) to attend the City of Manitowoc Sustainable Committee meetings once a month. Other upcoming community environmental events are: September 21st 9:30 AMA presentation on the Status of Lake Michigan presented at the First Presbyterian Church, Manitowoc, sponsored by the League of Women Voters. This is a great project for young people. Every environmental event- the tsunami in Japan, Hurricane Sandy on our east coast, fires in Yosemite- impacts the ecology of our world and each of us individually, just as how we individually use our earths resources is part of creating the events. GLOBE will learn and share with you what we learn about how to better use those resources. Our next meeting is Sunday September 15th after service. Wed love to have you join us!.
