Conditions of Prayer
To know/ believe the payer's time has entered One faces the qibla One be free of ritual impurity One be free of najasa on body, clothes, and place of prayer One's nakedness be clothed One must avoid actions prohibited in prayer

Today we will explain each of these 6 conditions...

Entrance of the prayer time


There are two ways to know if prayer time has entered: From hearing a dependable muathin (caller to prayer) Notication from modern clocks and prayer time calendars

It is an obligation to pray directly towards the Kabaa

How do we know the direction of the Kabaa?

Degrees of knowing the direction of Kabaa are four: To see the Kabaa in front of you, if not --> To be informed of the direction by a reliable person, if not --> To make your own ijtihad by using a compass or other technique, if not --> To follow someone who has made ijtihad

Be free of ritual impurity


One must remove a state of: minor ritual impurity by performing Wudu and a state of major ritual impurity by performing ghusl

Be free of ritual impurity


If a state of ritual impurity occurs during prayer, the prayer is no longer valid

Be free of ritual impurity


If one was in a state of ritual purity -> And then unsure whether he/she lost his/her wudu -> One is considered to be in a state of ritual purity

Purity of body, clothes, and place of prayer


It is obligatory that body, clothes, and place of prayer be free of najasa One cannot carry something lthy during prayer (such as in a pocket) If one notices najasa on body, clothes, or area after prayer -> the prayer must be repeated

Clothing One's nakedness


For a male: between the navel and the knees

The clothing must have no holes in it that uncover the awrah, unless the hole is covered. The clothing must prevent the color if the skin from being perceptible.

Things that nullify prayer

There are 10 things that nullify prayer...

1. Intentional speech: saying something to someone 2. Excessive motion: movement that is not part of prayer 3. Ritual impurity: losing your Wudu in prayer 4. The occurrence of lth: having najasa get on you body, clothes, or place of payer during prayer 5. Exposure of One's nakedness

Things that nullify prayer


6. A change of intention: you started of by making salat al Dhuhr, but remember you already prayed Dhuhr and you should be praying Asr. You must stop the prayer and start a new one with the intention of praying Asr. 7. Turning away from the direction of prayer 8. Eating during prayer 9. Drinking during prayer 10. Laughing out loud ** Leaving out one of the conditions of prayer mentioned in this lecture also nullies the prayer

If something happens during prayer and one want to alert the Imam... and one is male, he says "subhanAllah" If one is female, she claps with the right palm on the back of the left hand
