„ This pathway offers students
opportunities for Career exploration
in a corporate or small business that
may include areas such as banking,
accounting, bookkeeping, property
management, risk management and
market research analysis.
Banking
Banking Pathway
„ Educational Requirements
„ Tellers must have at least a high school
diploma or related experience in banking,
retail sales or positions with a high degree of
customer contact. Some employers prefer to
hire applicants who have related post-
secondary education. During the three to six
month on-the-job training period, trainees must
meet specific standards of performance to
become permanent employees.
„ Tellers are part of the larger Customer
Service Representatives - Financial
Services occupational group. In Alberta,
over 75 per cent of people employed in
this group work in the Finance, Insurance
and Real Estate industry.
Accounting
Accounting Pathway
„ Educational Requirements Training to
become an accountant involves a
combination of related post-secondary
education and practical experience.
Specific requirements vary, depending on
the professional designation.
„ To be certified by the Institute of Chartered
Accountants of Alberta (ICCA), Chartered
Accountants must:
„ have a university degree (or equivalent
education and experience)
„ be employed with a CA firm approved to train
students
„ enrol in and complete the Chartered
Accountants School of Business (CASB)
program, which includes online facilitated
learning modules and group interactive learning
meetings with facilitators.
„ Mount Royal College in Calgary offers a
four year Bachelor of Applied Accounting
degree program. The entrance
requirement is a high school diploma with
and average of at least 60 per cent in
English 30, Pure Math 30, and three other
appropriate Grade 12 subjects.
„ Accountants are part of the larger Financial
Auditors and Accountants occupational group.
In Alberta, over 75 per cent of people
employed in this group work in the following
industries:

subject areas are valuable when seeking

processing, spreadsheet and accounting
software.
„ Most employers prefer to hire job
candidates who have taken related
courses and programs from colleges,
technical institutes or private vocational
schools. In Alberta, a number of
institutions offer accounting courses and
programs, including:
Property Management
„ Most employers prefer to hire property
managers who have at least a high school
diploma, business experience and computer
skills. Graduation from a post-secondary
program related to property management, real
estate management, accounting or business
administration is a definite asset. Most
commercial managers have related post-
secondary education
„ Other Requirements The Real Estate
Institute of Canada offers a Certified Property
Manager (CPM) designation. To qualify for the
CPM designation, a property manager must:
„ have at least five years of experience as a
property manager, including one year under the
supervision of a CPM (10 years of experience is
required if the manager does not have a
university degree)
„ successfully complete specified university
level and Real Estate Institute courses
„ complete a long-range management plan
„ work full-time in real estate management.
„ Over 3,550 Albertans are employed in the
Property Administrators occupational
group, which is expected to grow 0.5 to
1.5 per cent each year from 2003 to 2008
in Alberta. It is forecasted that 10 to 60
new positions will be created each year in
addition to job openings created by
employment turnover.
„ Property managers are part of the
Property Administrators occupational
group. In Alberta, over 75 per cent of
people employed in this group work in the
Finance, Insurance and Real Estate
industry.
Market Research
Marketing Research
„ In Alberta, no specific academic
qualifications are required to enter the
field of market research, although
computer skills and a degree or diploma
in marketing are definite assets.
Advancement prospects are best for
those who have one or more degrees that
include courses in marketing, statistics
and social research methods
„ In Alberta, many post-secondary
institutions offer programs in business
administration, management and
commerce. The following institutions offer
education programs with a specialization,
concentration or major in marketing.
„ The Business Career College, a private
vocational school in Grande Prairie, offers
a 20-week Marketing, Management and
Entrepreneurship program that can be
extended to include a 12-week work
experience component. The entrance
requirement is Grade 12 education or
equivalent.
„ Mount Royal College in Calgary offers one
year certificate and two year diploma programs
in Business Administration with specializations
in marketing management. The certificate
program is intended for working adults who
wish to improve their business knowledge. The
entrance requirement for the diploma program
is English 30 or 33 and Pure Math 30 or Applied
Math 30 or equivalent.
„ The University of Calgary offers a four
year Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm.)
degree program and a five year B.Comm.
co-operative education degree program,
both with specializations in marketing.
„ The entrance requirement is a high school
diploma or equivalent with an average of
at least 70 per cent in English 30, Math 30
or Pure Math 30, and three other
appropriate Grade 12 subjects. The
University also offers a 300-
hour Marketing Management certificate
program through the Faculty of
Continuing Education
„ Over 2,750 Albertans are employed in the
Economic Development Officers and
Marketing Researchers and Consultants
occupational group, which is expected to
grow 1.9 to 2.9 per cent each year from
2002 to 2007 in Alberta.
„ It is forecasted that 50 to 90 new
positions will be created each year in
addition to job openings created by
employment turnover.
