GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH

(Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod) LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS January 5, 2014

THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS

PRAYER UPON ENTERING CHURCH
Dearest Lord Jesus, child of Mary and Son of God, You grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. You became obedient unto death, even death on a cross which to the world is foolishness but to all who are being saved it is power unto salvation. Grant that I grow in wisdom through Your Word and further grant that I share this wisdom with others. I pray this in Your holy name. Amen

WELCOME
Welcome to Grace! The Season of Christmas continues this morning. We hear these words today, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in ChristIn Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will. St. Paul in our Epistle reading for this morning shares this mystery with us, yet by faith we are given to know this and find hope in what God has accomplished for us in Christ. If you are visiting with us we especially wish to welcome you and we certainly want you to feel welcome, even as we want you to come and worship with us again. If you have any questions about Grace Congregation, please speak with our Pastor. We ask everyone to fill out an attendance card found at each pew and return it to an usher during the Offering. We are glad you are here and we invite you to come again. Children are welcome in our Service and will be invited to come forward for a Childrens Message. Parents may accompany them if they wish. We have a staffed nursery facility for infants and toddlers located downstairs in this building for anyone who has need. Restroom facilities are located downstairs as well as on this floor level across the bridge before entering the fellowship hall. If you have any questions, please speak with an usher or greeter.

HOLY COMMUNION
Holy Communion will be celebrated in our 10:45 Service today. In this sacrament we receive Christs very body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. Those who are not members of Grace are asked to speak with our Pastor before partaking of this sacrament so that the unity of faith might be established. Thank you for honoring this request.

AS WE GATHER
Those who are wise know the limits of their wisdom. This seems to be a paradox but is true. Just as words without love are only a clanging cymbal, so earthly wisdom is empty without faith in Him who is Wisdom from on high, Jesus Christ. Today, we come to rejoice in the Savior who is born not for other worldly needs but as the Wisdom that enables us to order our days and fulfill Gods calling now and enjoy the glory to come. Christ is all in all. To be wise is to know Him and to carry the joy of His Word in our hearts by faith.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS The Altar Flowers are given to the glory of God and the beautification of His House by Tommy and Judy Borchert in honor of their anniversary and in thanksgiving for Gods many blessings. Hebrews 10:22; Psalm 124:8; Psalm 32:5

Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Confession of Sins (8:15)

P Almighty God, our maker and redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
Mark 16:16; John 1:12

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. Amen

Confession of Sins (10:45)

P C O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.
John 20:1923

Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Ps. 147:1, 5, 1112; antiphon: John 1:14

P The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, C glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. P Praise the LORD! For it is good to sing praises to our God; C for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting. P Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; C his understanding is beyond measure. P But the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, C in those who hope in his steadfast love. P Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem! C Praise your God, O Zion!

Apostles' Creed (8:15)

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen

-9-

Nicene Creed (10:45)

C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen

Proper Preface
P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for in the mystery of the Word made flesh You have given us a new revelation of Your glory that, seeing You in the person of Your Son, we may know and love those things which are not seen. TODAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL, the lesson was about the boy Jesus in the temple (Luke 2:4152). As a boy, Jesus was found in His Fathers house. In Gods house I hear His Word, see that Jesus is my Savior, and receive His gifts of forgiveness and salvation. Because of sin, we are like Jesus parents and do not understand what Gods says to us. We dont recognize who Jesus truly isour Savior. Talk about how through Baptism and the power of Gods Word, the Holy Spirit makes clear to us that Jesus is Gods Son and our Savior. PASTOR WALTERS CLASS meets this morning at 9:45 a.m. upstairs in Parker Hall.
